I have 4 of them at present and couldn't accurately count how many have come and gone in forty years of messing with them. I've never had a problem with a Smith & Wesson. The only occasion I've had to sample S&W's CS was in sending one in for an action job and magna porting. S&W did the action and sent it out to magna port. No complaints and a good job.

Two S&W's.

One purchased used from a member of this forum and has been a wonderful sixgun (K-frame .357). I even just shot it this weekend.

Another one purchased "special" because S&W came to their senses and made some non-IL model 642's in a small batch. Shot that one this weekend, too.

Both are fantastic guns.

3 S&W revolvers here. An M29 in .44 and an M37 in .38, both over 50 years old and flawless. A new 460V, just picked it up last week. I haven't fired it yet, but the workmanship and attention to detail is first rate. The silly ILS will be removed eventualy.

Not as many votes in as the Taurus poll, but what did you expect.
85% of the S&Ws were perfect out of the box
68% for the Taurus.
So, if the trend continues in the polls, for twice the price you get a 17% better chance of a perfect gun out of the box.

Do math much?

for twice the price you get a 17% better chance of a perfect gun out of the box
By the numbers:
15% of S&Ws have trouble.
32% of Taurii have trouble.
That means you are more than twice as likely to have trouble with a Taurus.

I'd like to see turnaround time added to the poll. And remember that S&W will pay shipping both ways, while Taurus will not. Send that Taurus back once or twice and not only have you been without a gun for six weeks to six months, but any money you saved is long gone. Plus it will never be worth anything when/if it becomes time to sell it.

Of all the (probably a dozen and a half) S&Ws I have owned, I have sent in one. It was back in a week, fixed correctly and free of charge (even though I told them that I had bought it used and that the damage had been done by a prior owner). Don't hear Taurus stories like that, do you? :)

I own around 20 S&W handguns. Of those, two have went back to S&W for service, one was because of a prior owner (used HEAVY loads and also dropped the gun), the other was a NIB revolver that had timing problems when it was delivered to my FFL. Both times, S&W paid shipping both ways, and had them back in my hands in less than 2 weeks.

The only "new" S&W's I ever had troubles with, were two 940's (9mm Centennials, one of which was the replacement for the other). Both guns failed within the first 200 rounds, and both had to be disassembled to get the live ammo out to send them back.

Smith did take care of it, and in the end, sent me a 642 as a replacement, since I didnt want another 940 at that point.

The only other problem, was an old M&P .38, and it was well worn when I got it.

Other than them, all the others (around 20-25 guns) have been fine.

S&W's over the years

3 service revolvers over 30 years, no problems.

1980's bought a semi-auto S&W (mod 59) stove piped two cases during first 100 rounds (PPC qualification). Sold it immediately and never owned another semi-auto anything.

No problems to speak of...

I've got a bunch of S&W revolvers and have owned more. I think I've had a minor problem or two, but I cannot think of any.

Oh. One very used (and modified to accept .357 Magnum rounds) "Outdoorsman" model. It has a minor problem with timing, I think. So, one. And a very used Combat Masterpiece in .22 long rifle has a timing problem. Two.

Considering the rather severe use to which I put some of them (one's a 'bathroom' gun) they have held up admirably.

I will add this caveat: All my S&W revolvers are the older 'pinned barrel' guns, with the exception of a very early 581 (L frame) which I carried as a humble but lovable Border 'Troll. It hasn't ever had problems.

I do not have any of the unpinned, firing pin in the frame types.

I've had to have one S&W repaired due to over charge in the gun that blew the cylinder. Not the gun's fault and was still safe enough to have a replacement installed and still shoots.

I currently have three autos,,and two revo... no problems here at all.. tho I have noticed a substantial kickback from my 500 magnum,, be glad when hogue starts making wood grips for that x frame.
