Rifle barrel break in? Really?

I did a barrel Break-in on the only new AR-15 i ever bought that did not have a chrome bore, did it as per the manual; clean rifle after every shot for the first 25 rounds, then clean rifle after every 10 rounds for the first 100 rounds. Break-in takes 200 rounds total. Just because i wanted to do this with my rifle does not make me a putz, any more than it makes someone else who may not want to do it with there rifle a putz.

If you do a search for "Gale McMillan + barrel breakin", you'll find the opinion of the world record-holder in benchrest competition.

Amen to that.

I was fortunate enough on a recent trip to AZ, to tour the McMillan facility. On the wall in the lobby is a benchrest target. I do not remember the caliber used--only that there, in front of my eyes was the world's record target.

Gale McMillan shot that target; his group size, as measured, was .002. No, that's NOT a typo.

If this guy (Gale McMillan) were to post that horse turds plastered around the chamber and bolt handle helped to shoot better, I'd be chasing equines with a wheelbarrow.

The jury is still out on barrel break in. I do very little centerfire rifle shooting these days, when I fired one my SIG SHRs for the first time a few years ago, at 100 yard using Remington .270 130 grain bullets I got a 1.25" group-and I am VERY rusty. 30 years ago I fired a 1.5" group at 100 yards with GI ball out my Winchester M-70 XTR with iron sights. No break in. My Marlin M336 has always been very accurate-no break in. Just my experience of course.
