Revolvers vs Clips

A lot depends on what you want to use it for. How much you can afford to shoot it. No sense on owning a gun you cant afford shoot:confused:
By the way how did the shotgun shopping go? Hope you decided to go with a 12 gauge.

If you want a .22 LR handgun to help you improve your marksmanship, then great. .22 LR is dirt cheap to shoot and has minimal recoil. It's also a lot of fun.

But don't depend on it for self or home defense. It simply is not an effective defense round. I don't mean to be insulting, but I don't care what your father says or how much experience he has.

.22 LR is not an effective self-defense round. Sure, it can kill, and sure, it can put someone down quickly if you hit someone in the right spot (CNS). But to be able to hit that very small area quickly and reliably, even under the extreme stress of having your life in danger, is something that even if I were the best marksman in the world I would not want to rely on. Your father might be able to place a head shot into a bad guy at 7 yards in under 2 seconds in near darkness. But the more important question is can you? And even if you could, would you really want to put your life on the line for that chance? Even the best markman can miss.

The accepted minimum caliber for self-defense is 9mm for pistols or .38 Special for revolvers. You should only step down to something smaller if you have a physical condition that makes you unable to fire those rounds.

By all means, get a .22 LR pistol. Every shooter should have one in their collection. But please don't rely on it for self defense. Get a gun designed for self defense for that role.

I am always wryly amused by those who get up tight about calling a magazine a clip but then will speak of foot pounds of energy.

Now you're just being silly. Everyone knows that because of the commutative property of multiplication a ft-lb is exactly the same as a lb-ft. ;)

FT/LB vs LB/FT

The math is equal but not the meaning.

Foot pounds represents work as the equivalent distance in feet a weight is raised in a defined length of time.

Pound feet represents instantaneous force.

However, the point of my previous post was there is no reason to make a big deal of either magazine vs. clip, or of pound/feet vs. foot/pounds.

We all misuse many words but the meaning gets across and there’s no reason to make a big deal of it. Perhaps I should have been more clear of my intent.

This was actually one of the most civil clip magazine discussions I have encountered, especially on the internet.

Magnum Mike, I have decided to go with a 12 gauge. But what model is still under great debate...

Jersey emt, no offense taken, perhaps its that my dad has been such a good marksmen for so long he has forgotten that while he can make quick persicion (I know I spelled that wrong but oh well) shots I cannot. And he also talks about how is Nylon 66 carries 15 rounds. Perhaps he is not cncerned because he wont relent on firing until his target lies breathless on the floor. But actually with how our house is laid out we would hear somebody coming in and also if I had a gun with the way my room is aligned from the stairs, I can lie in bed and when th burglar get to the top of the steps he would be shot dead within 2-3 seconds since I an have a gun loaded within half and arms reach away while remaining very comforitable. I will heed the warning as I have been eyeing .38's and 9mm. I asked a marine if a .357 would be good or home defense. He said no and to go with a .38 beacuse in the dark the flash from the .357 shot can blind me in the dark long enough to be shot dead...

Time doesn't enter the equation for work or torque. You're making me regret listening in physics class... :)

I couldn't agree more. When the meaning is obvious the words are meaningless.

Happy New Year Y'all!! Have a fantastic year of the Tiger!

(I celebrated it almost 9 hours ago...)

Going to General Discussin with the lb/ft & ft/lb thing

Sport45,

You have brought up some interesting points about lb/ft and ft/lb. This thread started on a different tack than this so I’m starting another thread in General Discussion for getting better information and understanding of this.

Others are welcome, and urged, to join in.

Clay

right...forget this topic cause no need to help this noob...

???

Cut us some slack. We may have gone off on a tangent or three but we've offered some good advice along the way.

What question do you have that hasn't been discussed?

Big Tom: Between the Neos and the Buckmark, I would choose the Buckmark. It is one of the most popular .22 Semis out there. The Neos is also a good gun but it had some teething problems that may not have been fully addressed.

The majority opinion on shotguns for home defense is a 12 gauge pump. The most popular 12 gauge pump by a long shot is the Remington 870. It is relatively inexpensive, very reliable, and comes in a variety of flavors.

The truth is that pump action shotguns are very simple and rugged. If you look at used shotguns just picking one that's rust free and operates smoothly and the odds are in your favor that you'll pick a good one. I'd be willing to bet that lots of people on the forum have shotguns built in the 1930's or earlier that work perfectly.

Heritage MFG makes a nice 22lr/22mag revolver for under 200.00.
get this and shoot the crap out of it.
later when u can afford a second gun get a 38 or 357 revolver.
charter arms makes a nice little 38 for under 400.00 new. taurus has some decent value revolvers also.
keep looking at the used market, things turn up every day.

thanks fo the help guys, I will cosider everything that was said. Most likely sticking with the Buckmark. Thanks again!;)

Wheel guns (revolvers) are always loaded ( if u keep it loaded ) & on safe.!!
I had to read that twice. For a second there I thought you wrote all wheel guns users are loaded. Sometimes speed reading isn't a good thing. How do you put your revolver on safe, mine doesn't have a manual safety and I am not going to carry on half cock.

NEOS or Buckmark,,,

Both are very nice pistols,,,
I own and shoot a 6" barrel NEOS,,,
My friend owns and lets me shoot his 6"(ish) Buckmark.

Both go bang every time,,,
Both accept cheap or expensive ammo,,,
And both seem to have about the same accuracy level.

The biggest difference to me is the grip size and feel,,,
I have dainty hands so the slimmer grip of the NEOS is for me.

In my experience (not a huge amount I admit),,,
I don't see a lot of performance difference between the two.

Pick the one that fits your hand and you will be pleased with either one.
