Keep in mind the 3" has only 1 additional ball, but is 100fps SLOWER. Meaning less penetration.
That's why I am completely satisfied with my 2 1/2" chambered PD Poly. I see no real advantage to the longer, heavier, 3" guns.
 
I woman in my hometown shot her boyfriend 5 times with .410 shot from out of a Judge...she pistol-whipped him when she ran out. He survived with minor injuries.

It's where you hit, not how many times. In the case of the Judge, you can add what you hit with as well as how close you are. #7 1/2 shot at 10 yards will make somebody really mad. At 10 feet, it's gonna hurt like hell. But at ten inches there is going to be a big, profusely leaking hole!
Up the shot size to 000 Buckshot, and those profusely leaking holes are going to be made from a lot further away!

I remember the story...nearly point blank from a hiding hole. Some hits in the neck area among others. The guy did make it outside but collapsed in the yard. It did stop the threat.

Gotta think 20, 35 caliber lead balls @ 850fps would have stopped it too. Probably a lot quicker as well! :D
 
Federal 3 inch has 5 .36 caliber balls, the 2 1/2 has 4. So the 3 inch has 25% more, I'd rather have that even if it is slower. How do you know it's 100 fps slower? I doubt there's much if any real difference in speed in those snub nose guns between rounds.

I enjoyed seeing the gel penetration tests links provided in the earlier posts. Add that kind of penetration to the type of groups that I show in my above 7 yard Governor shooting video and you may get the idea of why (after being a shooter for over 50 years) I keep a S&W Governor as my PRIME home defense gun even though I have other guns available from .22LR through 460 Magnum.

Some think they are. But ballistic gel tests with handgun specific ammo seem to dispel that theory to many.
Some, due to early advertising of the Judge think they are an effective shotgun at long barreled shotgun range. But ballistic gel test with any ammo prove it is not.
What they are is an effective multi-shot, short range gun with good single projectile capability at common SD distances.
As the Judge made the platform more popular with it's advertising that was not quite realistic, it also had a second strike against it from many self proclaimed "experts". It was made by Taurus!. I still believe if the S&W Governor had been introduced first it would have been proclaimed by many of them as a great self defense innovation.
 
My problem with the Judge has been accuracy. I've heard from others that their Judge was accurate and I'm not going to argue the point based on the one gun I've fired.

But when I tried to shoot .45 out of my grandpa's Judge they seemed to be dropping several inches when shooting at something like 7 yards. Sure, I'm not the best shot in the world, but I'm not THAT bad. And I was using a laser. That's accuracy I would call... problematic.

(I'm still pretty ticked at the salesman that sold the old guy on that gun as a home defense weapon. Terrible choice as an only handgun for a guy his age, IMO.)

Well, as they say, "your results may vary", but this is what my Judge Public Defender Poly with a 2" barrel does off hand @ 10 yards. 5 rounds of Winchester PDX1 225 grain Bonded 45 Colt. Slightly left, but that is my fault.


Then there is the two rounds of Federal Premium Handgun 00 Buckshot at the same distance!

(the big holes are from a couple of the plastic wads)

Really, why? As long as he uses the proper handgun specific ammo, can handle the recoil, and it's only use is HD, or for an anti-carjacking vehicle gun I don't see a problem

Yeah, as I said, it might have just been an issue with the specific gun. I've heard lots of good reports from others. But I really don't think it was the human factor. Everyone who fired it was getting the same results, with and without the laser.

As far as it not being the best gun for my grandpa, I think the recoil is too much for him at this point in life (81). For others that's not a problem. His only other gun is a 12 gauge, which he also doesn't really enjoy shooting anymore. I just wish he'd gotten something like a 9mm or a .38, which he could shoot well and enjoy.

Still, I think it's pretty impressive that he's still shooting at 81. Love that guy.
