Reloading Unlimited?

Let us know when you get the shipment.....

And guys, if you just HAVE to have one particular powder, you might find to pay thru the nose for it. And those vendors know it!

Yes, extremely expensive. Five lbs Trail Boss (2 in stock) for $210 each (twice as much as from other sources when available) and another $30 for haz-mat fee and maybe some additional for shipping. Should I do it? Someone convince me that this is the last of the TB and it's a buy now or never situation.

Later addition:
Getting so tired of trying to find TB I broke down and bought one of the five pounders. Refuse to say what the price per pound breaks down to, but at least that amount will last for a while. Combined amount of haz-mat fee and shipping was $45. Add that to the $210 and calculate the price per pound.

Is it normal for them to not ship fo 5+ days? All items were in stock when I ordered...

I contacted them and they said they had a large amount of powder ordered and can ship a max of 200 lbs per day, orders scheduled for shipping in order of purchase.

I could be wrong but I get the impression they are a mom and pop operation. They go to gun shows on the weekend and the internet during the week. If I had to pack and ship powder every day I'd probably poop out after 200 pounds myself.

Edit. When I ordered the 8# jug of Accurate #5 it said there were six in stock and I noticed a little while ago it now shows 9 so I guess they got a shipment in.

I am going to guess that 200 pounds is the maximum UPS will take on the truck, and there is only one pickup per day. No doubt, the UPS Store won't take any as an alternative. They could schedule a FedEx Ground pickup though, but that may be a HAZMAT problem.

I would just stop looking for reasons to criticize. To paraphrase Arby's, they have the powders.

BTW I noticed their ad in the latest Dillon magazine/catalog.

Amen. They had it, I wanted it, so... I just got a little worried when the order was still in a processing state, so I called and asked.

And I assumed the 200 lbs, was a shipping limitation based on their carrier.

Was the same with my orders. Took them 9 days to get it out and another 4 days in transit. I also asked and got the same 200 lbs max per day explanation.

Heck I searched the web for a couple month and didn’t find shlt, so what’s 2 weeks.

I have now 8 different pistol powders thanks to Reloading Unlimited. At the rate I’m shooting lately this will last me over 2 years. Feels good not wasting time on the phone, web, at LGS or GS.

I just don't understand all the negativity. I placed my order last friday and it shipped today. Like someone else said, it just depended on how many orders were ahead of mine. Certainly fine with me. The price for the powder ended up being $22.50 a pound, not a steal but certainly not a rip off and this was for Accurate #5 which seems to be one of the harder powders to find anywhere. Contrary to what someone else thought, the $45 shipping did include the hazmat fee so that isn't out of line either. If you only want 2 or 3 pounds of powder, the internet is not your friend.

I think that's right, but averaging in the shipping/HAZMAT is almost $27, assuming you only bought that single 8 pounder. This just puts it in context with other mentions of price in terms of net price,

True, but every internet shipper is going to charge close to the same amount.
If, and that's a big if, I found it at a gun show here in the Dallas area it would be $28 for a pound plus tax plus $8 to $10 entry fee. I've got plenty of Win 231 and Autocomp but haven't seen #5 for years so now by buying 8 pounds I probably have a life time supply. I guess every situation is different but this one certainly worked for me.

Edit-One more thought then I'll shut up. I remember some time between the panic buying after Obama's first election and the tragedy at Sandy Hook that a few times Powder Valley would have a sale and waive (meaning they ate it) the Hazmat fee. I guess that's what we call the good old days.

Yes the above is not all that bad considering that the five pounds of Trail Boss cost for me was $50 per pound. Comparing against local gun show prices usually selling at a flat $20 per nine oz can, the gun show price per pound would be around $36 or so. From a LGS and paying tax, the price per nine oz can would be somewhat less than the $20 and a five pound container, if you could get it, would be the best buy. So if adding in the gun show and parking costs, you are closing in some to the $50 per pound (but you are usually there for more items than powder).

The powder I ordered from them was on my doorstep within five days from the order date. I have no remorse. I have some 2400 in stock now that I did not have before and could not find. I'm a happy camper. I have noticed in the last week that their stock of certain powders have been somewhat depleted. Business seems to have picked up for them. Hmmmm.......:)

At $51 per lb (compared to about $36 per lb gun show price), my five lbs of Trail Boss are on their way. When Unlimited says they have it, they apparently do have it, and they do deliver at 200 lbs per day. With TB this is a different powder. The usual one lb container holds only nine oz completely full with no remaining air space in the can. When opening for example a new one lb can of 4895, there is a good two inches of air space in the can. It takes nine full cans of TB to make up five lbs. Because of this distinction TB can be thought of as being much more efficient by weight and goes farther. Many more cases of say .30-06 can be filled with TB than for example with 4831 starting with the same weight of each powder. But whether that rationalization reconciles the high price of TB, either from Unlimited or from a gun show, is questionable and may not be valid. But at any rate if you need it and Unlimited seems to be the only one to have it, better grab on regardless of the price.

Makes you wonder how a small time operation can maintain a good supply while the big boxes with huge purchasing power have great difficulties getting "the good stuff", doesn't it? Most of the bigger outfits I talk to usually say some variation of "dang it--we've been waiting a long time and can only get what they give us."

Yes, and how many times have I heard that variation, "we can only get what they send us". But then strange things come up at other times, some small table at a gun show with not much else to offer has a case or two of Trail Boss. Where you might ask does he get it, especially if the individual does not specifically appear to be in the guns and ammo business. Typically the gun show price for a nine oz can of TB is $20 which works out to about $36 per lb. At a recent show I bought three cans from a table that had five and left the other two for the next person. Next stop was at a booth that carries loads of powder but no TB this time. I told them I would buy more from them if they had it, mentioning the two I had left at the previous table, and they were about tempted to run over and buy the two. Such is the craze and demand for TB powder.

I was seriously thinking of making a purchase from them but just lucked out at a gun show and copped 1(ea), 8 pound jugs of H110 and H335 for $199, ($24.88 pound). Of course local sales tax jacked the price per pound up to $26.60.

It is amazing the variance in prices seen at the show. low was $199 and high was $285!

Mixed experience with Reloading Unlimited

Thought I'd describe my experience with RU for those who might consider ordering from them. Unable to find a few powders locally (Reloder 17, Reloader 26, etc.), I saw that RU stocked some of what I needed and decided to place an order. Ordering process was easy, I was happy to find most of what I wanted in stock, and after wasting hours searching locally, I didn't mind paying the somewhat high prices and hazmat fees. So far, so good.

Unfortunately, their order fulfillment process left much to be desired in my case. In addition to the powders, I ordered some bullets & brass figuring I might save a few bucks on shipping by getting them from RU instead of Midway or elsewhere. I received the powders 11 days after I ordered them ... not great turnaround, but okay. The problem was that they never shipped the bullets & brass, despite sending me emails saying my order had been fulfilled. I called them after I received the powder order, 12 days after I placed the order. First they claimed that the bullets & brass order had been fulfilled, but they "don't get tracking information" from UPS. I told them it hadn't been fulfilled, so they looked into it and called me back. Finally, they admitted they'd "lost" the bullets & brass order (which they blamed on a website upgrade) and asked me whether I still wanted them to process it or cancel it. I asked if they could expedite the shipping at their expense given the 12-day delay and because I needed them before November 5 for a hunting trip. They flatly refused to expedite, at which point I canceled the order and placed one with Midway instead.

RU said they'd process a refund right way, which they did, but it was more than $50 short. I had to pull up the invoice, email it to them explaining the total value of the items I didn't receive, and ask them to refund the total price of the items plus associated shipping costs they'd charged me for. They finally refunded the total price of the items, but not the shipping cost.

In sum, if you can't find powder anywhere else and don't mind paying extra and dealing with long shipping times, sloppy order fulfillment and shaky customer service, RU is ok. But if those will be issues for you, maybe look elsewhere.
