Regal Cinemas Ban Carrying of Guns

last night (11-24-06) I was at the Edwards Cinema off of 610 and I-10 in Houston. They are owned by the above linked company. On their doors was posted a sign that said, among other things, "you are prohibited from carrying handguns or firearms on these premises." Being in Texas, I was able to circumvent this insult and ignore it as it was not a 30.06 posting that is required in order to legally keep out gun licensees. But, in many other states, these signs can very well keep you out.

AMC Theaters have the same thing I noticed a few weeks back as I visited their theater at Dunvale in Houston. Again I was able to ignore it legally. But again in other states, this is a violation of your rights.

I suspect Hollywood has a lot to do with this. They don't want you carrying guns. They want you to flock into the theaters to see their movies, but they don't mind you walking in and out of their theaters ready to be mugged or assaulted by the scum of humanity.

I watched the new James Bond movie "Casino Royale" with my wife at the AMC theatre in the Great Lakes Crossing Mall in Auburn Hills, Michigan last night with my pistol on my hip. No signs in the mall or theatre.

the point is, as a private business, they don't want you wearing a gun. They go out of their way to keep law abiding people from entering their theaters armed. It is a deliberate insult to gun owners and a safety hazard to the public because of a political agenda

Around where I live, that's the rule, not the exception. No CCWs in many restaurants, bars (I can kind of understand that one), nursing homes, hospitals (Gotta shoot the old folks -- oh wait, I'm one of them).

The Ohio CCW laws are a joke. Maybe I should move to Alaska. They seem to have their stuff together up there.

Thats why you protest with your $.
If all (or atleast a large portion) gun owners voted with their money things would be different.

I stopped going to movies because of the large crowds and fights that these kids sometimes start.

Doug,
Edwards 24 (just north of 59 on Weslayan) is not posted, but the box office windows have ghostbusters on all of them. No signs on the entrances, though. Just small stickers/paintings at the (indoor) box office.

Doug,
They deliberately insult you on more than one occasion & yet you repeatedly hand them your money! What gives???????

Movie theaters are private businesses.
If they want to ban people from being able to wear shoes, they can do that.
This line of reasoning always drives me crazy. I understand it; I just think it's naive. Those "private" businesses are open to the public. They are not taking measures to screen visitors/customers. They are not taking measures to turn away shady characters (and indeed that could be a rights violation, depending on the establishment's definition of "shady").

Why do they have the right to pick on people with guns, when by virtue of being open to the public they've given up the right to pick on so many other classes of people?

Once you open your doors to the public, you give up a measure of those rights. There is a long list of things you need to do when you are open to the public. You cannot discriminate based on race, you need to comply with the ADA, fire codes, health codes, and a host of other laws. Besides, Corporations do not have the Constitutional rights- including property rights- that people have. (Endowed by your Creator and all that.)

Businesses like to say they can prohibit the law abiding from carrying weapons, claiming that they own the property and thus have the authority to control those upon it. They forget that with authority comes responsibility and accountability. If someone were to be robbed, raped, or murdered on their property, they claim "third party intervention" and avoid responsibility.

If you are a business and want to take away my ability to defend myself, fine. You are now responsible for my safety. Since you are not willing to take that responsibility, I will retain it for myself.

I, like Kowboy, went to see Casino Royale last night with my g/f and buddy and had my XD sitting right on my hip. Things have been on a pro-CC upswing here lately, though. I would not go to the movies here without my gun on me. Not advocating breaking the law, but you know concealed means concealed. Either that or just wait for DVD. I don't really like large groups of people anyway. The general populace annoys me lol.

Maybe I should move to Alaska. They seem to have their stuff together up there.

Cinemas are posted up here too, as are some shopping malls...thats why its called concealed.

Dont y'all get tired of complaining all the time that big bad everyone is violating your rights? save your energy for the real fights...(ok I know whats next, its educating the sheeple yadda yadda.... )

Doug,

because in this particular case, I can circumvent their sign because of Texas law. Otherwise I WOULDN"T unless I had to (out with friends and they wanted to see a movie)

Thats why you protest with your $.

I agree. That's why I don't shop or go to the movies in Katy Mills mall just outside of Houston anymore. They have a 30.06 sign that legally says a I can't have means to protect myself.

These two comments make me wonder if it isn't a local theater thing. I know they have had several MS13 gang incidents in the Edwards Marq'e at I-10 and 610. Still, it logically doesn't hold any water. If they are afraid of criminals shooting each other, then a criminal will enter with a gun if there is a sign or not (he is called a criminal afterall  ) All it does is disarm you (if it was a 30.06 sign) and leave you defenseless to the criminals with guns.

I wonder if Katy Mills mall has had the same problems. Those two said places seem to attract a lot of inner city trash.

That's because Concealed Carry in Michigan was passed with much less fanfare than in other states. Most people in the state don't even know that you can get a concealed handgun license. Whenever I go to Ohio, I see "no firearms" signs all over the place, even for public buildings like rest stops. I have never seen a similar sign here in MI.

Why don't yall go to the link that was originally posted and let Regal know what you think?

Pick "Contact Us", and at the very bottom of that page, pick (I think) "comments".

I haven't noticed any signs at the Regal near my house, but I let them know that on my next trip I'll be looking for one, and that I hope that I don't see it so that we can keep doing business.

I don't know what your experience is with them, but I have sat in a full house one time over the 50 or so times I've been there. The rest of the time I've been one of maybe 15 patrons in that partcular theater. My business might be more important that it would first appear, and so might yours.

If we don't fight back against knee-jerk business gun bans, the only place left available to us to carry our defensive firearms will be walking between the two yellow lines in the middle of the street.

We need to work on getting the gun free zone liability act passed, I think.

Here seems to be their general attitude. Since they were polite, I have redacted the company employee's name. Note that the answer is first, with my "comment" being the original complaint. My reference to "that theater" was not to the Texas one. I had selected the theater I have been using from a list on their website.

Comment:
It has come to my attention that you have signs posted on some of your theaters in Texas forbidding the otherwise legal carrying of concealed weapons by their owners into your theaters. I have not checked for any signs at the theater I selected, but I frequent that theater and, sometimes when I do, I bring with me my firearm, for which I am licensed to carry concealed in the State of Florida. Even though I have rated your parking lot as Very good, which it is in terms of lighting at night and openness during the day, you know as well as I do that even the most upscale areas of South Florida carry a significant violent crime risk. I intend to defend myself and anyone near me against any attempt at such a crime wherever I go. That includes your movie theater. Now that the sign in Texas has been brought to my attention, I will be checking for any similar notice the next time I visit your establishment. The appearance of such a sign will, unfortunately and sadly for me, preclude my doing further business with that theater. While your concerns about firearms may be valid, my concerns about my personal safety and that of those about whom I care are every bit as valid. I hope that, in the future, I find that you feel the same way.

I recommend others write as well. Even though this exchange did not seem to sway Regal, the theater I frequent is in a heavily populated area and I rarely see over 15 people viewing any one movie. That means my business and a few others' business IS important to them.

This is why we need the Gun-Free Zone Liability Act, big time.

They do a simplistic calculus looking at the risk of not barring lawfully-armed people versus doing so, and they will always land on the "no guns" side every time unless the scales are tipped against it.

The GFZLA is definitely one of the most important things we can do to protect our right to self defense.

I really don't like being told where i can and can't take a gun loaded or empty and all army and marine veterans should feel the same way if they had to carry one in the service, that being said, why would anyone want to carry a gun in the store or movies?? coild be looking for trouble.
I was in the diner this morning when a hunter came in and when he took off his coat he did 3 full circles to make sure that we all saw his 357. It impressed no one and he could have locked it up in his glove box. he really looked srupid.
