recommend pistol in 45 acp

1969Colt1911,

John Browning's original 1911A1 design had an external extractor. I have no idea of the specifics that resulted in an internal extractor.

I have not heard of a single problem with S&W external extractor.

I used to carry a 5904. It was a flawless handgun. I've never experienced a single problem with it.

^^^ Interestingly, Sig's website only list the .45 as being available for the full-sized model. All of the others are listed as having .45 "coming soon." I didn't realize that until today.

To the OP, the Glock 41 looks to be an excellent choice for a range and home defense gun. I have the Glock 34 which is the 9mm version.

But my favorite .45 ACP for range, home defense and carry is the 1911.

Bersa Thunder Pro UC in .45 ACP,,,
I own the 9mm version and like it quite a bit.

10 + 1 in .45 ACP

The .45 is a 7+1 gun.

DA/SA with de-cocker
Completely ambidextrous controls.

Safety is reversible, not totally ambi.

This pistol has been called the Poor Man's CZ-RAMI,,,
But to tell the truth I like it more than my friend's new RAMI.

The grip is somewhat fat but it uses double-stack magazines,,,
The fatness is mediated by the wonderfully ergonomic grips.

Just another good gun to consider,,,

DA/SA. Frame mounted safety works like the 1911 guys like -- up safe, down fire. Controls large, easy to reach, easy to operate.

I had the older ("non-pro") version. I had 4 different parts breakages over the 5 or 6 years I owned it. Sold it off, and plowed the proceeds into a Rock Island GI, which I am, so far, quite happy with.

If you can find a Ruger P90 it would be worth checking into. Price is within your budget and they are reliable, accurate, heavy enough to dampen the recoil without being overly heavy.
Just my $.02 worth.

I have a P90 I am contemplating selling off.

Of course we all recommend what we have paid for, and for me that would be the M&P 45 Compact. I can say I've fired a lot of 45s, but have owned just a couple. This one is the most comfortable, easy-to-shoot and accurate 45 I've ever fired...including an Ed Brown or two and a Wilson Combat. Obviously, that's to do with the shooter more than the gun, but still, the MP45c is the one I'm recommending for my daughter, as I think it may be one of the best-shooting defensive pistols available at any price.

All I think I can add is that when I went looking for a carry .45 the last thing on my mind was a plastic piece of junk. I was a Sig guy big time, and definitely wanted a steel gun. I spent a bit of time (not a lot, a box or two at most) with Sig, Glock, HK and finally the MP. After the M&P it was a done deal, and I'm still more than just 'happy' with the choice.

By far the most comfortable handgun I own--and naturally this may not be your experience. Sig and HK don't work for me at all (I just don't 'get' them), and I've purchased two Glocks, reluctantly, since then. I carry the G29 and the MP45c about equally, with the G29 maybe getting a little more time...but I still can't get quite the performance out of it that the Smith provides, and it's a big block compared to the super slim feeling M&P.
