Picture a city built in a soup bowl that is below sea level.

Here in Arizona, it's against the law to build in a wash or in a riverbed!!

It should be as well there!!!

If you can afford to build, do so. If you can't...I have my own problems but I DO carry insurance just in case so my problems don't become worse.
=Telewinz

If they rebuild New Orleans, we all lose. Who do you think will pay for those rebuilds? Insurance companies? Right! Then those same insurance companies will stick us with the bill by raising our rates...we end up paying in the long run, so, you see, even with insurance, your problems do become worse.

Rebuilding a city located next to the mississippi river and gulf of mexico is assinine, especially when that city is below sea level...if they want to live below sea level, let them find aquarius...aquaman can show them where it is!

Should everyone have just edged away from the thread, murmuring, "It's too soon and very impolite to discuss that even in a hypothetical sense just yet"?
Yep

How much later should that discussion take place, Rich?
Well, I'd posit that sometime after we established a body count might be tactful and civilized.

You are not the person from whom I expected maudlin melodrama.
Nor did you get it. If a troop transport ship went down with thousands on board, would you think it kinda low-rent to debate whether it's worth the expense of hoisting it from the ocean floor even before the next of kin were notified? I would.....and I'd think it all the worse if, in that debate, we started pointing fingers at those who failed to put their life vests on.

Rich, your comments reflect a sense of dignity and decorum that clearly demonstrate your empathy for the victims of Katrina. However, I respectfully disagree with your conclusion.

A body count will not be finalized until after the water is drained (2-3 months per the Corp of Engineers) and the rubble is searched. Should the people displaced by Katrina have to wait 3, 4, or more months before a discussion even begins about how the country is going to help them put their lives back together?

Fair enough question. How about we compromise and state that it's a bit ghoulish to debate razing their home city until after we've at least attended to their immediate needs for survival...luxury items like food, water, showers and immediate needs healthcare?

Look, I haven't closed this thread for the same reason I didn't vote in the attached poll: y'all have a right to debate it, distasteful as it may be to me personally. Just remember though, TFL has Members in the stricken area. Sooner or later, they'll get back on line and check in. They'll be greeted by this thread and others like it.

I commend you on your decision making. I can't say I always decide right, and I will admit that perhaps participating in this thread at this time was not the best course of action. My thoughts and prayers to the well being of the victims should come first.

Rich, thank you for leaving this thread open, even though it is clearly distasteful to you and contrary to your heartfelt convictions.

I honestly don't know what would be exactly the right time to have this discussion. But I have talked to two friends from New Orleans (who should arrive in my town this weekend), one of whom spoke briefly on the phone about considering his options for the future - whether to stay and rebuild in New Orleans or move elsewhere.
