Put Them In Order: Fastest Shooting Guns

Haven't you all seen blazing saddles? The Waco Kid (aka Gene Wilder) is the fastest gunner that ever lived, and so were his guns.

Speaking of Single Action Army's, I'd sure like to know what Badlands Bill Ogelsvy [sic]'s splits are when he does his "hammer" trick.

Two shots with a SAA-type off fast enough so that a whole crowd of IPSC and steel shooters thought it was just one. Heck of a show.

Tamara,

1911's ruled IPSC long before there were comps. and open class. In the pre "race gun" period, the only top shooter of any note that shot anything other than a 1911 was "Tommy-Gun" Campbell, and he was factory sponsored by S&W and obliged to use their products (and his guns resembled a stock model 39 or 59 as much as a modern race gun resembles a stock 1911).

Your 23C is ported, isn't it? If so, it is an unfair comparison to your non-ported 1911's.

In the competitions that I am familiar with, the 1911's (in non race gun configuration) are continuing to dominate, be it IDPA (CDP and ESP divisions) or IPSC (limited 10 division). Heck, why do you think that IDPA and IPSC have these other divisions? It is because other types of guns, on average, are not able to compete with the 1911 as a platform for delivering multiple hits on multiple targets from a variety of positions.

You stated that "In putting rounds on target fast, I'd give my G23C and P7M8 a better than even chance against my steel-framed, single-stack, .45 caliber carry 1911's." In your hands, maybe. In the real world of competition, with empirical evidence to back it up (rather than speculation and conjecture), the G23C and P7M8 have been soundly beaten by the 1911.

Given your reference to IPSC competition guns, I have to ask. How much competition shooting do you do, be it in IPSC, IDPA, or "action shooting" competitions? Are your G23C and P7M8 beating out the 1911 shooters? Do you have first shot and split times with your guns telling you that your G23C and P7M8 are faster than your 1911's, or is this just speculation on your part?

Inquiring minds want to know. ;)

There are lots of reasons not to use a P7 in IPSC:

Initial cost, short sight radius, expensive mags, minor caliber, grip disturbing cocking lever compared to safety, not widely known or available to try out.

None of those reasons have anything to do with how fast it can be shot. A 1911 is decently fast for the caliber it fires, but maybe a competition shooter needs more than a fast cycle-that extra inch of sight radius and light safety as well as high overall weight smooth out the shooting from target to target. That's not what we're talking about. Pure mag emptying speed!

For an out-of-the-box pistol...

I am quite surprised at how quickly the venerable S&W Model 52 can fire off it's 5+1 rounds while keeping the sights on target. Slow slide speed, but smooth and minimum muzzle flip!:D

Handy,

You are right. I seem to have strayed somewhat in my posts. There certainly is a difference between "Which gun can function the fastest," and "Which gun can be shot the fastest." Two very different questions, and I was addressing the second.
