To me it sounds like there aren't enough heavier weapons, only I'm not the one that has to carry anything. Perhaps there ought to be more designated marksmen. Where in a company these days is the 7.62 machine gun?
As far as having different uppers, that sounds like a bad idea, or at least an idea that will have more disadvantages than advantages. A better idea might be to have complete rifles chambered in a different cartridge for theater issue, although that isn't suggested exactly what that other cartridge should be. I suppose the squad automatic, currently in 5.56, would also have to be chambered in the new wonder cartridge, too. The squad automatic was originally designed around a 6mm round that, while it had a heavier bullet and no doubt a longer overall length, did not have a particularly higher energy, if that's at all important, although it did have about 10% more. A 7.62 NATO in comparison has about 100% more, or double the muzzle energy.
