Proposed New US Service Rifle Cartridges

To me it sounds like there aren't enough heavier weapons, only I'm not the one that has to carry anything. Perhaps there ought to be more designated marksmen. Where in a company these days is the 7.62 machine gun?

As far as having different uppers, that sounds like a bad idea, or at least an idea that will have more disadvantages than advantages. A better idea might be to have complete rifles chambered in a different cartridge for theater issue, although that isn't suggested exactly what that other cartridge should be. I suppose the squad automatic, currently in 5.56, would also have to be chambered in the new wonder cartridge, too. The squad automatic was originally designed around a 6mm round that, while it had a heavier bullet and no doubt a longer overall length, did not have a particularly higher energy, if that's at all important, although it did have about 10% more. A 7.62 NATO in comparison has about 100% more, or double the muzzle energy.

hmm.. i was just reading this... and well, had to mention something that could be a negative... the base diameter of this cartridge is larger than even a .308 or .30-06... meaning for the length of a 30 round magazine you couldnt even get 20 rounds in... so either the magazine will have to be much longer, or youll have to settle for a rifle with 15 or so rounds...

if im going to settle for 20 or less, then my tactics are going to follow battle-rifle tactics, not assault rifle tactics and in that case i might as well have a .308
