Presidential debate tonight,,,,whats your predictions?

Bush answered the moderator's questions - including the last one about character - while algore kept "on message" even if it had nothing to do with the question. Bush seemed sincere and unrehearsed, algor, a bit more articulate, but arrogant and totally scripted. Bush missed a golden opportunity to hit algore twice; first when algor said his drug benefits would help everyone ("Everyone? So, Mr. Gore, when Bill Gates retires you'll have people like those average americans you brought along with you paying taxes to buy him medicine? I thought you were for the little guy?) and secondly, when algore talked about energy conservation. ("Look in the record, and you'll see algore wants carbon taxes on gas, diesel, fuel oil, you name it. I guess gas prices weren't high enough in the midwest when the environmental fanaticism of his EPA cut supplies by requiring reformulated gas. But maybe fuel oil prices will be high enough here in the Northeast to satisfy him. His idea of conservation is to drive prices up until nobody can afford fuel!")

I thought Gore came across as an over-domineering boor who had to have the last word--even though his last word is the umpteenth rerun. I would not want such an overly controling person as president--he might not listen to the people with the right answers.

Gore very consistently ran off into his canned presentations even though they in no way related to the question.

The one interesting point is his harping on the fact that a large part of Bush's tax cut would go the wealthy. If everyone receives a tax cut proportionate to their previous pay in, this is probably true as the wealthy have potentially (even uppper middle class have tax shelters) paid the higher portion of taxes. Bush did mention that these wealthy would receive proportionaltely less of a cut.

This extended mathematical conversation would be difficult in a debate for anyone except Perot and Gore took advantage of this.

Bush just comes off as a such an idiot. He really is just an overgrown frat boy who only went to college to party on his dad's money. In spite of my being a gun owner and sportsman I generally vote Democrat because of other issues, namely the environment and education. Unless you make $100K a year you really aren't going to be served by the Republicans. It's really too bad that there isn't a third party candidate that really represents issues that I care about. Upholding our Constitutional rights, free speech, legally owning firearms etc... And cared whether my children could breathe the air or swim in the same rivers and lakes that I did as a kid. Bush's record on the environment is horrible. He will let the oil companies drill anywhere they please and would probably stripmine Yellowstone!

Just my $.02

Makarov, (I like that nom de plum) Do a little checking. The last I heard Dubya scored higher on the SAT then Algore and while Al was wasting his Daddy's money at a seminary school he failed something on the order of five classes...But than again the "unbiased" media will not be repeating that anytime soon.

Marakov,

I agree about the general Republican agenda. Conservatives believe individuals should be given the right to choose for themselves, liberals think everyone should enjoy government protection from life's problems.

I agree with the individuals having the responsibility, but in the political sense this often equates to individuals and businesses exercising their right to decide without taking other people or future generations into account.

I agree that the general populace and the environment need to be protected from individuals. But in the political sense this too often comes down to the government telling people what should be good for them and relieving them of personal responsibility.

Both approaches can and do result in selfish and irresponsible actions on the part of individuals. Either because they think they have the right to do whatever they want or because the world is padded in pillows to protect them from the results of their behavior. I cannot tolerate either.

I am a registered non-partisan as I cannot totally support either camp. I usually vote conservative Democrat and centrist Republican combinations for balance. This year the emphasis will be on avoiding anti-gun candidates to get us off the current anti gun bigotry, so the Republicans will probably getting most of my votes.
