Presidential debate tonight,,,,whats your predictions?

There's probably about 40% on each side that are firmly committed to their candidates, and another 3% on each side that are wavering. The undecideds at 14% probably means that, while each guy may get a little dig in at the other, they're going to try to play nice. Bush probably gets the nod in the personality category, so if he can show a grasp of the issues he could swing a good portion of that 14%. If he could find a "nice" way to let the people know that Gore is proposing to increase government and government spending to the highest levels in the history of mankind, my hopes would be fulfilled.

Please, no more Gore.

Dick

GW is an egaging, friendly, likeable individual, who has proved his ability to work with all types of people to get things done. Even Ma Richards had to admit that he has done a wonderful job as Governor. Even the democrats here are supporting him. If he comes across this way during the debate and Gore starts to lecture us like 6 year olds, then this won't be much of a problem for GW. If he doesn't allow himself get dragged into the mud and wrestle with the demopigs, then he will do fine.

I am for Bush and won't even be watching tonight. Sadly however I think Gore is a better debater.CBS news has already run a report tonight on Texas CCW and how many deaths it has caused, how many felons now carry,etc... It will take a miracle for Bush to come out on top tonight but heres hoping!

I believe the media will portray Gore the winner even if Dubya catches him in a lie live on network TV! Gee, Dubya calls and a**hole an a**hole and its frontpage news. Gore's boy gets arrested before the DNC and the media sits on it for 5 days before conveniently reporting it after Gore's DNC speech...

I just watched five minutes of the so-called "debate". Sorry, guys, but it made me want to wretch. There was no real debate, but only quibbling over different degrees of socialism. This is so depressing. I must either be getting exceedingly cynical, or simply recognizing the truth for what it is.

I couldn't watch. Had to work, but I just read the AP main story, and I think Bush won big. I say this because if he'd stepped on his dick, as everybody in the media predicted, they'd've played that above all else. And he'd be dead. From the AP story I get the impression Bush had Gore on the defensive overall. He even coined a phrase that we'll probably hear again: "Medi-scare" to characterize Gore's attempt to sell his number-jumbled health care plan. Bush also got off a crack about how, with all the numbers Gore's spouting off, he must think he invented the calculator as well as the Internet. Heavyhanded, of course, but if Gore had a comeback, the AP reporter didn't mention it. Sounds like Bush maintained his dignity, interjected a little humor and didn't come off like a fumbling dumbass. This means the cartoonists and talk-show jocks will have to back off. This means Bush won. And winning the first one gives him a huge leg up on the rest of them. Let's hope.

I watched a little during my breaks from studying. I am a little biased being from Texas, but I know that everytime Gore opens his mouth he is lying. W. seems personable, like a normal guy. I just hope Bush does well because I am frightened about what might become of this country if Al Gore wins the presidency.

Gore didn't answer a single question. Bush looked great right up until the end... but at least he didn't sigh as much as Gore.

GWB... Easy Winner. Cool, Poised and Correct.

You have to be there when it's all over. Otherwise you can't say "I told you so."

Better days to be,

GW did good up until the time he called Bore the liar that he is. Most people can't stand "attack," or so the media has trained them. Whatever happened to the two fisted debates of old? Bore kept trying to obfuscate the issues with "fuzzy math." I like the quip about inventing the internet and calculator that GW used. And I also think that the line about the "The Buck Stops Here" being moved to the Lincoln Bedroom was right on target.

No, our socialist media heads will
"really" tell us who won, and yes many people
will believe them.
We have many sheep out there.

Like it or not (and I don't) Gore looked like the winner. He came off as arrogant, nasty, superior, and unwilling to abide by the rules. He spent the evening with a supercilious smirk on his face ("I am trying to be patient with this idiot") but he made his points well and simply dominated Bush from the git-go.

Someone quicker and smarter and able to be both nasty and funny could have wrapped him up, but Bush is not that person. I don't know how many voters changed their minds, but I doubt many Gore supporters will go over to Bush based on tonight's performance.

Jim,
"He came off as arrogant, nasty, superior, and unwilling to abide by the rules. "

Just curious, why are these good traits? Aren't these the very same traits that have gotten Bore's boss in trouble?

I think they must have read my post about the first guy to hose it up being the loser. IMHO both of them mostly recited their brochures. No winners. We have two more rounds of this and I hope they find some less depressing suits. All they needed was sunglasses to look like the MIBs.

I think that the fact that Bush was able to answer the questions asked in under the 2 minute time frame just showed that he knows what he thinks about the issues and he is telling the people straight up what he thinks and was very clear on the issues. He did not jumble words around, he did not have to have the last word on every topic and he told everybody straight up that this is how I feel, I hope you like it.

Gore seemed to be on the ropes a couple times to me, his overly loud sighs made him look like a school boy with no patience when somebody is disagreeing with him, somewhat childish. He could never just get to the point of a topic without going over the two minutes given to him which says to me he is beating around the bush and really does not know what he thinks.

The worst part of the debate was when Bush attacked Gores character, in which he is ultimately right,BUT the majority of the people however do not want to see that and it can only hurt you in a debate when you lash out.

When Gore said I will not stoop to your level with attacks, what he really meant is I wish I could rip your head of right here and now but I know what the people like to see and whats going to get me more votes so I will act like I am above that and just keep my mouth shut. He was waiting for Bush to launch an attack for that very reason, Bush lost quite a bit with the majority on that one but overall he looked good up there and I am sure he suprised alot of folkes last night.

This is going to be close boys.

On to round two!

Bush did not attack Gore's character. He was asked a specific question by the so called moderator. He was asked what the differences are in the two men's character. What was he supposed to say? Was he supposed to say, "There's no difference. We're the same." ??? No. He pointed out that Gore has no character. He pointed out that Gore cannot be trusted. He told the truth. He said that Gore believes he can break the law when there's no "controlling legal authority."

So, he didn't attack Gore's character. He answered a direct question.

I wanted to go a different route, so I listened to the debate on the radio rather than watch it on TV so as to avoid the visual effects and to better concentrate on what they were saying. This was a good exercise, and as I'm not planning to vote for either of these two gentlemen my comments come without bias.

I thought Bush had the upper hand.

Gore stammered and stuttered quite a bit, I thought. He may have been able to play that off on the screen with hand gestures and head movements, but his voice betrayed him numerous times. He didn't have ready answers to a lot of the questions, and he kept going back repeatedly to his "I've been in public life for 24 years, and I've always worked for the middle class families" mantra. He used that to stay away from several questions on specifics, which couldn't have helped him any with the general public. And there were those constant sighs in the background when Bush was speaking. Gore must have been rehearsing those as part of his debate preparations, because they were obviously NOT spontaneous reactions to comments by Bush. He came across as weak, in my opinion.

Bush wasn't stellar, by any means, but he was better than Gore by a long shot. He struck me as fairly comfortable with himself, which Gore obviously is not. I just wish he'd stand more for the Constitution, though in this day and age of American indifference that apparently isn't possible.

The other presidential candidates should have been allowed on the podium. What we heard from these two was mainly different variations of similar themes. There are differences between them, to be sure, but they just aren't as large as most Bush supporters believe or want them to be.
