Poor girl at the range (Funny. Or not?)

One of the gun shows I go to, I look for a guy that sold me my first reloads. If he has more of them left when I get there, I buy more. Never had a problem with the reloads. He gave me his card and told me to call him if I had any problems. I do not know how he reloads them, but they work and I save money and I can shoot more.

I really do hate self appointed range sheriff's.

I agree! Nothing funny about this. (Wanna hear a funny story? I was driving home from work and ran over a kitten and two puppies... Nothing funny about it at all!)

Several points have not been mentioned. First, was she having "issues" with the ammo? If not, if she was shooting and the ammo was working fine, what was the problem? O.K., Daddy called it an HD instead of an XD. Just a newbie mistake. Probably 50-75% of the ammo fired in this country is reloaded by someone. It was in poor taste to denigrate the quality of the ammo until it was found to be bad. I once showed up at a police rifle instructors course with handloaded .308. The chief instructor told me that reloads didn't work out well in his class, in his experience. I just smiled and said, "Well, I had to finance myself here (no departmental sponsorship), so I couldn't buy Federal match. Let's see how it goes." I had spent several evenings hand working the cases (LC match cases, flash holes uniformed, cleaned, trimmed-to length, etc), and handweighing the powder on a balance scale (didn't have an electronic yet). My stuff shot just fine. In the case in question it might have been better to say, "I see you have reloaded ammo. Sometimes quality isn't what it should be, so if you have problems, that might be the cause.", and then offer to help if problems arise with information on malfuctions, shooting techniques, etc. As alluded above, that would go a lot further to making society pro-gun, rather than "turning someone off" with empty comments that hurt or dissapoint.

Ammunition
Use only fresh factory ammunition such as Winchester®,
Remington®, or Federal®. DO NOT use handloads, reloads,
or remanufactured ammunition in your Springfield
firearm. Only shoot cartridges of the caliber engraved on
the barrel. DO NOT use shot cartridges or any ammunition
which is loaded with a frangible projectile or any ultralight
weight projectile at elevated velocities, or any
wooden or plastic projectile.

The above is from the manual.

Anyone know if it's like a Glock, and the barrel rifling fouls with lead?

The above is from the manual.

............written by a team of lawyers to protect the company from people who like to sue them when a gun or ammo malfunctions.

All gun manuals say this kind of crap. In fact, 99% contains big bold all capped letters that say stuff like:

WARNING FIREARMS ARE DANGEROUS....
WARNING, ALWAYS MAKE SURE THE GUN IS UNLOADED....
WARNING, A LOADED GUN WILL KILL SOMEONE....
WARNING, DON'T POINT LOADED GUNS AT PEOPLE....
WARMING, ONLY A CERTIFIED (fill in the company's name) ARMORER SHOULD DISSASEMBLE THIS GUN....
WARNING, ONLY USE LOW POWERD, SHINEY, NEW, SUPER EXPENSIVE AMMO IN THIS GUN
WARNING, DON'T SHOOT THIS GUN UNDER WATER....
WARNING, DON'T USE NON FACTORY PARTS OR MAGAZINES IN THIS GUN, YOU WILL DIE
WARNING, WE ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR THE MISUSE, INTENTIONAL, UNINTENTIONAL, STUPID, OR OTHERWISE USE OF THIS FIREARM
WARNING, NO ONE UNDER THE AGE OF 21 SHOULD EVER TOUCH OR EVEN LOOK AT THIS FIREARM - THEY WILL IMMEDIATELY DIE.
WARNING, DO NOT DRINK ALCOHOL, SNORT COCAINE, OR HUFF GLUE WHEN OPPERATING THIS FIREARM....
WARNING, NEVER DRIVE A VEHICLE WHILE OPPERATING THIS FIREARM.

Then, they include one useful page of how to dissassemble the gun and reassemble it. And, if you're lucky an exploded diagram of the gun's parts on another page.

Pretty much all manuals say the same thing.

The OP did not see fit to give us any information on the reload (was it FMJ?, LSWC?, we don't know). How he decided that the reloaded ammo was poor reloads and bad for the gun and shooter, was not the point of his story that's why he didn't tell us anything about it. The point of his story was that he met some new shooters at the range, he brought a young woman almost to tears (he says), he likely embarressed the father in front of the daughter and maybe the son by making the father look ignorant in front of them, he enjoyed doing this enough that he came here and posted on it. At best he wasn't sure about what he did so he asked if it was funny or sad.

Nope, nothing about the ammo is important to this story.

That's not my question, really. Is this a Euro gun, with polygonal rifling, that loads up if lead is shot in it?

If so, where the reloads lead?

Tipoc: your point is well taken...

Is this a Euro gun, with polygonal rifling, that loads up if lead is shot in it?

It is european (Croatian specifically), but doesn't have a polygonal rifled barreled. Off the top of my head, only Glocks, H&Ks, and non-CW series Kahrs come with polygonal rifled barrels, it's hardly a "european" thing.

the xd doesnt have polygonal rifling like the glock.

and i have over 21,000 rds thru my xd40sc, 90% of those are reloads, most very hot reloads.

ive had no problems at all.

I just feel horrible reading this thread. This is what I don't like about "gunshop preaching". If I wanted someone's opinion on the range, or from a guy behind the counter I'd ask, if not they should mind their own business.

Well, now that I have the facts, I'll say it's sad that the poor girl listened to Elvishead. Hope when she gets home, the family will recover from this abuse.:(

I think elvi and several other must not know that lots of ranges buy from these reloaders and the only difference between a can full of ammo and a little card board box is cost. I know of 4 indoor ranges that i have visited all sell remanufactured ammo. Where do you think all the brass on the floor goes? Back to there supplier so he has brass to work with. Let elvi think long and hard before posting or talking to someone in a range again.

Did the girl shoot any of this crap ammo?

Did it go bang and put a bullet downrange (hitting the target is another matter)?

If yes, the what the Hell are you so smug about? Both you and the range person, deleted! What was his response, Oh, they bought from Cabela's or someplace else and we make better here at the range, irked, miffed they didn't buy his crap--because it's reloads also, you know!

You ruined her enjoyment, made her and her father look like idiots and might have cost us another shooter, that we desperately need!

Oh, by the by, what the Hell do you shoot, nothing buy factory, new? If you shoot at a range, using their stuff, most of them use their own reloads!

I'd say that Elvis needs to learn how to put together a flowing sentence, and how to keep unwanted and uneducated comments to himself. And this joker is a senior member?

i don't get what is funny. some girl is minding her own business and you tell her a horror story of what? Guns blowing up from reloads? xd-40 malfunctions(idk if they have them or not)?
i can see if you are trying to educate to keep folks safe from the risk of reloads, but whats the point otherwise?

Also, considering the current Obamaized market, reloads are a GREAT idea, since new ammo is either unavaliable, or absurdly expensive.

Really; the conversation should have only included the suggestion that she buy her "reloads" from a reputable company. Any negative opinions of reloads in general, is just an uneducated comment. Hopefully her dad or others who go shooting with her, will be able to set her straight and allow her to enjoy shooting her pistol.

Not Funny. Pretty lame actually. The range master was taking shots at the poor girl too? Sounds like a place I would not want to shoot at. I hope this woman finds a better range with a more knowledgeable and abusive staff. Oh and this "girl" owned a handgun, making her at least 21 years old. 21 year olds are not girls they are WOMAN or LADIES.

I learned my lesson the hard way -- after shooting 1000's of rounds of reloads, in a few diff't calibers, I kb!'d a Glock several years ago  Never again will I trust reloads from an unproven source
