Pocket Gun Competition

I like the concept, seems practical.

However have you address the ideal that people actually carry pocket pistols in their pocket. Reading the rules I didn't notice if this was allowed.

Every now and then when I shoot ICORE, I shoot a second gun, that being my 642 which I pocket carry. While shooting the match I use my pocket.

Something to think about.

I'm going to talk this up around here in hopes of getting something started.

A few IDPA clubs I know of hold BUG side matches. They make them 5 round neutral and allow starting from the ready to eliminate pocket draws which the SOs are uncomfortable with. Not the most realistic, but pretty handy.

This is a great idea.
With all the folks carrying and owning these types of guns, there should be lots of interest in it.
It's kind of like why IDPA was created, to provide a more real world type of match.
Hope it's successful.

I bought a M36 j-frame specifically so I could shoot this last match. Outside of an ICORE match, I've never seen so many revolvers! And nice, shiny once-fired .38 brass on the ground?! Lordy, a reloaders dream, lol. :D

Seriously, it was a fun yet challenging match. More to the point, many seemed pretty surprised at their performance when tested with the very gun they might trust their life to. Competition aside, then, it's a great opportunity for people to get out there for some good scenario-driven practice with their carry gun.

I can't get to your website,,,

It just won't open the link.

There should be more matches like the one you started.

I would love to compete with my Model 36 or Model 34,,,
Against other people with similar pocket semi's or revolvers.

If for no other reason than they would be fun.

On the front page of web site it notes "for safety a strong side belt holster or inside the waistband strong side holster must be used".

Kraigwy, Thanks.

Navy Joe, I run IDPA here at Caswell Ranch (home of NC State and East Coast Championship) and did not like the concept of bug, only five round stages, no reloads, no holster, no divisions, no classifications and guns that are small service guns (3.8" barrel, S&W 625 3" etc).

I'm confused here,,,
Are you meaning you don't like bugs for IDPA?

Is that why you started the new PCCA to keep it separate from IDPA?

Thanks for checking the link,,,
I still can't access your site but will keep trying.

This seems like something I would really enjoy participating in. I often pocket carry a P3-AT as a BUG or in warm weather, and I'd love to gain some more practical experience with it.

Not to far from home, too.

aarondhgraham,
No, I think bug and PCCA are more along the lines of spirit/intent of IDPA than IDPA has become. What I'm saying is IDPA Bug is not recognized, has no divisions, only 5 shot stages etc, some of the permited guns are small service guns not back-up.

In short, I created PCCA to be a more complete sport/practice for this type of firearm.

I think you did well, I wasn't pushing IDPA BUG as the one true answer, just saying others try. Be neat to see yours catch on.

I've participated in the first two PCCA matches at Caswell Ranch. Other than Ruger Rimfire (also at Caswell Ranch), these are the only matches I've ever shot. I must say I am completely hooked. It's nice to be able to use the SP101 that I carry 90% of the time to compete in realistic defensive scenarios and practice reloading under time pressure.

I brought a co-worker to the last match and again, like me, competing was very new for him. He's now hooked.

For those within driving distance of Caswell Ranch I can highly recommend the facility for either recreational shooting/practice as a member or for competitions in any of the disciplines they host. Great setup, great people, great competitions.

Dean,

I'm torn on whether to bring my SR9c to the next match or stick with the SP101 again. The revolver nerd in me is having trouble with the idea of switching to the bottom feeder, but I do want to play with my new toy. :).

Tom,
I was in the same boat, got the Sig so I could stay with the intent (founder has to stay on track), trust the revolver more than an auto in a small gun.

Play with the new toy.

Eventually I'll bring my LCP to a match (I do have an appropriate holster and mag carrier setup now). I'll likely also invest in an LC9 at some point in the future, once they've been out awhile and any bugs are worked out. Yep.........Ruger nerd as well..........

Those will be more in the spirit of the pocket guns than my SR9c.
