Pick one caliber between .223 and .30-06

I choose the 6.5x55 Swede, or .260 Remington. If you reload they are very similar in performance as is the 7MM Mauser and 7MM-08 to one another.

You Mean Calliber, as in Diameter of Bullet.
So you ask what we the Members of the board would use between .22 Cal and .30 Cal if we cant have either ?

Strange, but I would prefer 7MM Mauser.

I'm a big fan of the 270win. but It's to close to a 30-06, To split between .223 & 30-06 I'd pick

1- 7-08
2- 7x57
3- 25-06
4- 257 Roberts

For no particular reasons, it'll probably be 6.5G for semiauto rifles, and 300WinMag for Bolt actions.

Although I'm a big fan of the 300Blackout, it has its limitations.

Tossup between .280 Remington and 7mm-08, with a slight lead for the .280.

If we were going to specify a semi-auto only platform, I'd have to go with either 7.62x39R or 6.8 SPC, unless they make AR-10s in 7mm-08...

I already made that choice and got a .260 Remington ;) If larger animals (elk, etc.) were on the menu, 6.5x55SE because it can drive 160gr bullets better. Although, I have a .338 Federal but that's outside of your caliber range.

Any of a host of cartridges would work fine for the vast majority of what I shoot. Anything from a .243/6mm up to a .308 cal, requirements would only be that the case would be the size of the .308 or so, and be chambered in a rifle I like with good optics on it. After that its just beer/camfire discussions. Put good quality bullets where they belong, and let physics do the rest.

.243AI

55gr Varmint bullets at 4,000+ fps

80-85gr Barnes or up to 105gr conventional bullets at 3,000-3,600fps for up to elk, maybe bigger.

back when I 1st got into guns ( my FIL was grooming me to take over his collection ) I was going to buy one handgun, & one rifle, & borrow anything else I might need... my choices back then were a 4" 357 Magnum, & a 243...

I know alot more now a days... 243 would be too light for my "do it all cartridge" today... I do really like these

6.5 X 55
7-08
7 X 57

but I'm actually going to be buying another hunting rifle ( stainless ) in 270, only because it is also at least as good as the others, & I inherited a ton of 270 cases & loading components
