persuade me, why a 1911?

Hey Tamara, I don't see any knives, what's going on?? ;)

The Boker "Titanum" titanium alloy kitchen knife on the counter was cropped out of the photo. ;)

I really must seek help... :D

The trigger, ergonomics, pointabilty, slimness, options, and sheer "classicness" of the venerable 1911 drew me to it.

I'd venture a quess that the same might be true of you.

ditto to all.....when the chips are down it will see you through. I begged my Armorer to blow the dust off of one in the Arms room while stationed in Korea, rather than carry the Beretta 92.

[mandatory diclaimer] There is no magic sword. While everyone loves a good gun, the gun does not matter as much as you do. [whew, glad that's over--starting gun nut chatter]:

The arguments is favor of carrying the 1911 as your primary weapon are several in number and is more of a synthesis (sum of the parts) argument:

1. The stock is narrow and easy to control;

2. The single trigger makes it quicker to learn and the SA allows greater first round control;

3. The design of the weapon is thin, allowing it be carried easier than most larger pistols;

4. The design of the weapon allows easier manipulation, this is vital in one handed drills;

5. The magazines are narrow and "handier" helping reloads and making them easier to carry.

There are pros and cons of every weapon. There must be trade-offs. There is no black magic which allows the perfect weapon. There are valid arguments for the Glock, the SIG, the revolver, etc., et al, ad naseum.

I made my choice after reflection and skuling. However, I realize that the most important part of the weapon is who is wielding it.

I had the same questions until I shot one. Then I shot another one. Then I shot someone else's. Then I bought one.

I agree with all the things said. Forget the caliber war garbage that some people bring into play. The 1911 can be found in 9mm, 38 super, .45. It is the design, the comfort, the accuracy and the ability to "work on" the gun that makes it so appealing. And, you can do as little or as much as you want. Buy a basic gun and you are good to go. Or, do what ever work to it you want to make it YOUR gun.

Now, if the one I bought would just get here already!!!!!:D

Everything else is Junk

Simplicity, Functionality, and Durability.

Just purchased my 5th 1911 style pistol. If you haven't fired one, you can only imagine the pure functioning compared to all those overly complex double action pistols. They are the "Harleys" of the pistol world....you can easily tailor them to your needs or personality. Pick up a Brownells catalog and notice the number of suppliers and quantity of custom components available. Look at the major pistol competitions...what is everyone shooting. They can be as accurate as you want them or "looser" so you can roll around in the mud with them.

Although I have four currently in my collection, I would still like to add a couple more for good measure.

unexpected overwhelming response, thanks everyone. I think i'm going to have to arrange to shoot one before i buy, but so far i'm convinced. if nothing else it is one of the best looking autoloaders out there, reason enough to pick one up.

All the above is true, plus they are so beautiful. I received my first for Christmas, and when I dry-fire at liberal politicians on TV, the Kimber 1911 is the one I pick. What else can you say?

Because life is short. I don't think we can take our toys nor our guns to heaven. So, you may want to get to the Pearle Gates and look back through your life and be thankful that you made the most of it and had the pleasure to know what it feels like to try what are arguably among the finer handguns mankind has designed.

To use a car analogy, I have had the pleasure of an Acura, an excellent, functional and reliable vehicle just as my Glock 21.
I have had the pleasure of driving my father-in-laws new Mercedes. It exudes a totally different experience that touches different emotions. I hope to own one some day. I recently bought a new 1911 for the same type of experience.

Toys are not everything. But, it sure makes life more fun knowing that you do KNOW what you are talking about when you talk about Glocks or HKs or 1911s based on experience.

What more reason do you need?

Al

Nicely said ALG.

I'll give my two reasons:

1. Why eat hamburger when you can have a steak?

2. John Moses Browning (I want to meet the firearms genius at Glock or any other manufacturer who can or has made a better design than this man). Anyone?........I didn't think so. ;)

When I started learning about handguns, everything I "knew" came from gun magazines. So naturally I figured there were two ways to go. (Keep in mind that this was the early 90s) A DA/SA wonder nine, or a super dooper customized $3000 1911. Everything else was crap. Since I couldn't afford a uber-1911, I bought a crunch ticker.

For a couple of years I practiced with various DA guns. And I sucked. No matter how hard I practiced, I still was just mediocre. I know that some people can get good with a DA trigger, but I just am not one of them.

Finally I tried a friend's 1911. Just a normal box stock Springfield. Suddenly my accuracy and speed dramatically increased. Cool...

Since then I've been a dedicated 1911 fan. It just fits me in some way that no other gun comes close too. Try one, you might like it.

I can't really be specific about why I like 1911's. All of it's good points can be found in other guns (and vice versa).

It's not something I can put my finger on, but after shooting one, I just couldn't stop going back to it. Go ahead. Get it. You'll like it.

Feed it right, and it will go bang. Every single time.

There is a reason why it continues to fly off gunstore shelves 91 years after it made its first appearance.

...It's as necessary as any other tool!

So for all you 1911 fans, tell me why i should get one, what makes them so special.
Nope.
If you cannot see The Light, then my describing it to you will only serve to frustrate you.
You must find your own way to The Truth, my son.:D

Edited to delete proof of fumble-fingered typing...

Buy one, point it at the next guy that tries to steal your car, and the reaction you get when the poor guy pees his pants will be worth the 700-1500 dollars. :D Fact of the matter is this gun has been around for ages, shots great, feels great, lots of aftermarket products, and if you like to customize things this is the gun for your!!!!
