Personal Defense ammo

This thread would be much more effective with a poll....

The overall Alpha would have to be Federal HST 124 std pressure. However, I am 100% onboard with 124s in HST, Ranger T or Gold Dot flavor, standard pressure and +P, aka The Gang of Six.

Same applies to .45 ACP in 230 gr, although I also use some alternatives to the Gang in that caliber.

Phil Shoemaker, noted Alaskan brown bear guide, just had to kill a brown bear at several feet with a 9mm defending a client on a fishing trip. He used Buffalo Bore hardcast bullets. Not recommending them for self defense in the home or on city streets, but if you take your 9mm hiking in bear country, it's one hell of a recommendation. Myself, I take my Springfield V16 Long Slide in 45 Super when hiking in bear and lion country shooting Buffalo Bore 255g hard cast at 1100 fps.

9mm: Federal HST 124gr

.380: Hornady American Gunner 90gr XTP, or Precision One 90gr XTP

.45: just whatever's behind the counter when I go to get defense ammo. Currently 230gr XTPs. Have used Golden Sabers in the past.

Hornaday Critical Defense although quite frankly nearly all the modern 9mm PD rounds are pretty decent and will get the job done - the minor differences in performance amounting to splitting hairs.

Federal HST 124 grain. Sgammo carries 50 round boxes of it for something like $23. I debated switching to +P and I might when I get my CZ P01 but I haven't considered it necessary yet.

Hook686, are you using the 9mm Buffalo Bore +P 147g hardcast for self defense against people or bears? Just curious. I load the 45 Super Buffalo Bore 255g hardcast at 1100fps in my Springfield V16 Long Slide when hiking or camping in bear country.

WINCHESTER

In my Sig P320 C and 226 Navy I carry Winchester 124 grn +P PDX1 Spring/Summer. 147 Grn Fall/Winter. I trust these with my life.

I may also add Federal HST and Speer Gold Dot excellent choices.

I used to use Speer Gold Dot (I usually empty them at the range every 6-12 months) ... but I kept finding "goobers" from my pocket in the noses. It probably wouldn't make a difference to performance, but I did switch. I now use Hornady Critical Defense, that plastic/polymer filling at least LOOKs like it will prevent "goobers" and cause fewer potential hangups. Never really had an issue with either though.
