Perfect Home Defense Gun?

My PHDW is a pair of hi-cap Glock 21s. One with a Streamlight TLR-1, one without.
NOTE: I also have loaded mags placed in strategic locations throughout the house.

If that’s not enough I can grab one of these …

My HD weapon is a 12 ga Mossberg 500 with an 18 1/2" bbl. with a holder for extra shells on the stock.

I ain't gonna rely on a pistol caliber to drop a doped up junkie; especially if he's packing heat. 12G all the way.

6 00 buckshot in the mag tube and 3 slugs/3buck in the side saddle. Coupled with a pistol grip, 18 inch bbl, and many practice drills clearing your house should be enough to keep you safe. If you think not? You should hire a live in commando. I do tend to agree that you SHOULD have both pistol and shotgun ready....maybe tuck the pistol IWB and grab the shotty?

+1 for shotgun.
+1 for both

*take my ignorant opinion as you will*

Just how many zombies to you guys expect to invade your homes? Are you sure that Sidesaddles and 6-8 shot mag tubes are enough ammo?

Sniperczar,
What it commonly boils down to is which one are you most adept using when the time, God forbid, comes. They both have their own advantages.

I own 11 shotguns, but the one I use for HD is my trusty old Ithaca M37 20ga.....26" IC barrel, loaded with #3 buck.....also....it wont go thru the walls and into the neighbors house!!! :)

If you load a shotgun with a round designed to not penetrate a wall, why do you think this same round will penetrate a person to sufficient depth to cause incapacitation. #8 shot causes a nasty shallow wound. It is made for little birdies, not people. Would you take a .22 on a deer #8 Probably hurts alot but it does not reach the vitals. If that is the reasoning behind your round selection, then you need to think some more. If you want at shotgun because of it's KNOCK DOWN POWER, then you need a round that will do the job. 00 buck might be a good choice here. Sure it will penetrate a wall but if you shoot the BG and not spray rounds towards your childrens rooms...... Sigh, End rant.

Home defense gun..... For me, depends what I have out of the safe at the moment. I don't ever expect a single round of ANY caliber to stop anyone. I shoot until the threat is down or stops being a threat. My Home defense shotgun is also my onduty gun. Benelli M1 Super 90 with Surefire weapons light and a side saddle. My side saddle is full of slugs and the tube is full of 00 buck. For home defense the side saddle is just about worthless. I also have an AR but prefer the Shotty for home defense. If I just knew something bad was going to happen, the 12ga is what I would reach for. And I would still apply the shoot until the threat is down method. If you want to search your home for BG's rather than hold up and call the po po, then a pistol is less likely to be grabbed away from you than the protruding barrel of an 18" or (Dear God) 26" Shotgun. A shotgun is a stand off, defensive weapon. Great for covering a door with your family behind you and your wife on 9-1-1. But using a Shotgun to go prowl around the corners of your home is asking for trouble. I DO believe that racking a round into a shotgun will scare away MOST would be BG's. But never count on anything. Who knows what some crack head is going to do. Ultimately, I think, Training and mind set are more important than the particular weapon used.

Erm...isn't it common knowledge that "Knock Down Power" applies only to, say, deck guns and artillery? :o

Regardless, I prefer a 1911, a spare magazine, and a flashlight. Even a SBS is a bit long for the environment of the average home, and I'd be concerned that the added size would render the weapon difficult to manuver effectively and prone to being grabbed. Sure, no one would let an intruder get close enough to attempt to snatch their weapon away, but things seem to get messy in the real world.

That's not to say that a high-quality 12-gauge (590A1, anyone? :D) couldn't prove to be useful. I just happen to prefer a smaller, more manuverable weapon.

Well, how about a double rifle?;) I know a couple folks that carry nice, handy, quick shooting 450 and 500 Nitro Expresses around when things start making noise. Course they are not likely to hit a neighbor, and, they have 4 legged BG's to worry about as well as 2 legged BG's.

They also carry 500 JRH revolvers for backup...

Scooterloo,
The Taurus 45/410 is a good home defense gun. Use the .45 when bad guys attack, and the .410 if your house is ever attacked by blue jays!

I've noticed a few have mentioned rifles. Are you really using a high power rifle as a home defense gun?

Have given this much thought......

I live in a log home so overpenetration isn't an issue, as it may be for others. I'll reach for a cocked and locked 1911.........Essex

There is no magic bullet that will be 100% effective ALL of the time. No round that is fire and forget. Carry the largest caliber you can hit with, and control, and shoot until the threat, stops being a threat. Training is FAR more important than the gadgits or particular round or even caliber. I carry a .45 as my DUTY sidearm. I reach for a long arm when I know I am heading into harms way. I don't expect a .45 to be a fight stopper. It is just the biggest round I can control under rapid fire.

Same thing aplies to the almighty 12ga. You have better odds but it is still odds. Plan to shoot until the threat is no longer a threat and stay vigilant until the police arrive and take over.

You will also need to justify your action in a court room after the fact. That is a whole other battle all in itself. I like shooting paper and hope I never have to shoot a human being, either on or off duty. I can't afford the legal fees.

Buy good reliable ammo in the caliber you are comfortable with and then train, train, train, and then train some more.

20" Mossberg 500 w/ extended magazine---7+1 rounds of S&B 3" Magnum 15 pellet 00 buckhot (8+1 if I use 2 3/4 inch shells)...That's 120 .32 caliber peices of lead (at handgun velocities) flying through the air. If THAT doean't stop the threat, it'll at least allow me to get to a Hi-cap rifle, if the zombies are truly attacking in force:D
