Pelosi Going to Syria Despite Objections

I think a couple of these points need to be reiterated...

What is Pelosi going to do with Syria? She hasn't the power to negotiate anything. Essentially, she is using her elected position to express her personal opinion to Syria.
Nancy Pelosi is out to build a name for Nancy Pelosi, probably for a run at the presidency. She is typical of the flash versus substance politics that has given us this fiasco. She needs to stay home
While I disagree that she does not have the power to negotiate anything, I agree that this is her own way of progressing her political agenda. There is no good that can come of her going abroad to visit foreign leaders. If anything...like
I would think it weakens us in the eyes of the world.
EXACTLY.

I would say she has the power to negotiate things, but would any of that matter if she got back to the U.S. and asked GW for something? I mean, first she goes against the State Departments wishes, fine...she is stubborn, but then she goes and tries to negotiate with another country when she does not have the backing of the very country she is representing. How can any good come of this?

This isn't about Republican or Democrat. Its about Pelosi and her BS. She was strongly advised by the state dept. not to take this trip and regardless of how any one feels about her personally its irresponsible of someone in her position to take this trip at the present time.

I agree with this statement, here's my proof...
White House Official Criticizes Pelosi Visit to Syria (Update1)

By Laura Litvan and Brendan Murray

March 30 (Bloomberg) -- A White House spokeswoman denounced a plan by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to visit officials in Syria as part of a trip to the Middle East.

Pelosi's outreach to a state sponsor of terrorism is a ``really bad idea,'' White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said at a briefing in Washington. ``Someone should take a step back and think about the message that it sends and the message that it sends to our allies.''

Perino's remarks come as a group of Republican lawmakers has embarked on their own trip to Syria. Michael Lowry, a spokesman for Representative Robert Aderholt, said that the Alabama lawmaker will visit Syria as part of a Republican delegation led by Representative Frank Wolf, a Virginia Republican. Wolf is the top Republican on the House appropriations subcommittee that funds the State Department.

Perino wasn't available to comment about that trip.

How is it, that a group of Republican legislators can go to a country seemingly unknown to the average American, but when Pelosi visits, I mean its a huge fanfare? Seems to me, that if I were going to go and negotiate in the Middle East, where quote on quote Americans are hated, I would not tell anyone until I got back. This just goes to prove that she is on her own political agenda and that she is showing off...like "hey, see me, I am here and GW told me not too, ha ha ha" Childish games are all they are, more childish games.

Bush managed to take us from a position of having the compassion and support of the free world after 9/11 to the most hated state we have ever obtained. I had to cancel a trip to Greece this year because of the negative opinion of even europeans towards Americans. Never have I ever had to be concerned with such things.

Sorry PP, but thats just total BS...more rhetoric that just goes to prove its just your opinion on how the rest of the world feels...I mean seriously..."the most hated state...ever" As far as the Greece trip, I am sorry to hear that, but I never would have cancelled a trip to another country because I am American...NEVER, matter of fact, I am touring the European area (Hungary, Austria, Czech, Poland, and Germany) this summer. Doesn't mean I am going to carry an American flag on a 10ft. pole above my head, but if someone asked, I would happily be obliged to tell them I am from the best nation the world has ever seen

Seriously, when the decision is to put on a scarf or offend someone's religion, your criticism is way off target. A diplomatic mission must be diplomatic.

Not just Pelosi, but any female reporter in the middle east.

Could someone explain to me why when we are in their country we must be respectful of their beliefs, but when they MOVE to our country we must be respectful of their beliefs.

I don't get how you reconcile the silence by Dana / the White House on the republican trip to Syria.

Is going to Syria a bad thing or not? How can you/they condemn one envoy and not another?

One of the findings of the ISG was that we need to talk with countries like Syria. I guess it was just a dumb piece of paper like our constitution.

Communication is what seperates us from the animals. Not talking to someone just because you don't agree with them is childish. I agree with SecDef that the British did a great job handling their hostage crisis. Our president is incapable of talking to people who disagree with him. I remember Saddam Hussain challenging Bush to a debate before the Iraq war. I wish he had done it so he could have whipped Saddam in a debate. But unfortunatly he just isn't a skilled communicator. Nancy Pelosi is an asset to our government and our country.

The Israelis are asking Speaker Pelosi to carry a communication from the Israeli government to the Syrians. The State Department also sent Pelosi something to take to President Assad.

Why is that necessary...mailmen all on strike in Syria?

Could someone explain to me why when we are in their country we must be respectful of their beliefs, but when they MOVE to our country we must be respectful of their beliefs.

The "You're in America, Speak English" thread is two over to the left.

The "You're in America, Speak English" thread is two over to the left.

Actually its the "You need to take your burka off for your drivers license" thread, or the "If you're a taxi driver you need to pick up people whether they have booze or not" thread, or the ever popular, "You can't apply for a job at target and then decide you can't touch pork" thread.

Not talking to someone just because you don't agree with them is childish.

Agreed. But not talking to terrorists because it won't do any good isn't.

Nancy Pelosi is an asset to our government and our country.

What a joke. Name one thing shes done for our country.

Nancy Pelosi is an asset to our government and our country.

After seeing this statement I just I err ahh I am at a loss for words OMG your kidding with this ??

and
I've felt the same way about mormons for years
.
What does this have to do with Nancy Pelosi ?

Why is that necessary...mailmen all on strike in Syria?

thats funny...

I don't get how you reconcile the silence by Dana / the White House on the republican trip to Syria.

Is going to Syria a bad thing or not? How can you/they condemn one envoy and not another?

No I am def not saying that talking is a bad thing...thats diplomacy. What I am saying is that if she really was concerned about Syria, the Middle East Crisis, or any thing else for that matter relating to world peace, the War in Iraq, etc...I think she would have handled it differently. I honestly believe that this is her way of putting herself out there and forwarding her political career.

I agree that the Bush Admin has made errors...I mean thats blatently obvious, but I would agree with them that talking with Syria, who has been known and will continue to harbor, help, finance, etc. terrorists is just plain stupid.

Not talking to someone just because you don't agree with them is childish.

First, how is that childish? I can see that if you were telling that statement to a child, but when we are dealing with volatile issues in the Middle East and Syria is one of the "bad guys" (I consider them that because they fund and forward the progression of terrorism in the world) there is no point in talking...its just plain stupid.

Nancy Pelosi is an asset to our government and our country.

WOW...:barf: :barf:

Redworm , I just ran this past an attorney who specializes in medical malpractice. His PAID opinion is that Mr. Bolton could successfully sue the aforementioned poster for slander, based on his proclamation of degreed status.
He also said that, depending on the state involved, the Medical review Board could certainly become involved.

Your opinion is, of course, yours. However, nothing that you have stated has any form of proof to back it up.

No doctor has ever taken an oath that says they can't pass an opinion on someone without examining them. A neurologist overhears a person in the supermarket complain about numbness in his extremities, that neurologist can tell her friend "that guy probably has some form of neuropathy, possibly from MS" without violating any oath she's taken. This is no different.

That's got to be the dumbest thing that I've ever heard. You've obviously never attended a medical malpractice course. Or a medical ethics course. Doctor's, or other medical professionals, have been taught for decades that their opinions carry legal weight. Making statements such as your example would open them to any number of legal issues. Good Samaritan wouldn't help them, either.:barf:

Just for kicks, read the attending link, it deals directly with unsolicited psychiatric opinions.

Communication is what seperates us from the animals.

Opposing thumbs and lack of tails are what separate us from animals. Most animals communicate fine amongst each other.

Not talking to someone just because you don't agree with them is childish.

A huge difference between not agreeing on what kind of bubble gum to get and not agreeing about promoting mass murder.

Blair did a good job, but you have to be kidding about holding a debate with Saddam. Contrary to some people's belief debate doesn't solve the world's problems. Sometimes you just have to use a bigger hammer and high explosives

Nancy Pelosi is an asset to our government and our country.

Well, at least you got half of the word right.

I suggest you guys look up the content of the message the Pelosi delivered to Syria. It's not unworthwhile.

Here's an Israeli source, which has a vastly different "take" than US papers.

Pelosi should be commended for her first 100 hours, where she pushed through the legislation she promised she would push through. That's pretty hard to do for a first time speaker.

Actually what separates us more than anything else is self-awareness and the ability to reason and thus make rational choices. Opposable thumbs are common among primates and we had them long before our brains had evolved into what they are today. :p

Well, at least you got half of the word right.
LOL!!!

Maybe this old Country was once a Nation of order and rules and guidelines to go by but sometime past some folks decided that rules were made to be broken, guidelines were for the brain impaired, noses got longer and began sticking into other's business.

Occasionally the Executive Branch would assume the posture of Julius Caeser,
the Legislative Branch think they were Federal Judges, and the Judicial would
at a whim assume they were Legislative and issue to the people "The Law Of The Land".

And now we are ruled by the whims of liberals and conservatives who spend most of their hours trying to stuff nonsense down each other's throats. How do the ordinary people yell "time out"? Right, wrong, or indifferent, Pelosi will get her reward sometime from God, man, or beast.

Pelosi visited Israel yesterday and told her Israeli interlocutors that the country must speak with Assad and that the door should not be closed to Syria, even though she is aware that Syria supports terrorism and continued cooperation with Iran.

http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/844730.html

So let me see. She knows they are terrorist and yet she is trying to tell Israel that they have to deal with them ? Why don't me just let her tell all the world leaders how to run things. Yeah I'm sure she could fix all that is wrong with the world. NANCY save us all from our selves oh great one

LMAO ROTF :D

ok SecDef...I took your advice and read the article...

It's not unworthwhile.

not sure what you mean by that...hopefully that it was a waste of time

Pelosi visited Israel yesterday and told her Israeli interlocutors that the country must speak with Assad and that the door should not be closed to Syria, even though she is aware that Syria supports terrorism and continued cooperation with Iran.

Her statements hinted that if the Democrats regained control of the White House in 2008, they will work toward renewing dialogue with Syria.

So let me get this straight? You agree that she should have gone to talks with the Syrians when she KNOWS they support terrorism? Second, not only has she opened the door to the Syrians, she has hinted that she will renew dialogue when Democrats regain control!!!

Are you kidding? Not for one second do I believe everything in the MSM, but even if a small portion of this article is true, wow we live in scary times.
If you play with fire you are sure to get burned...

You got it. You keep the lines of dialog open even if actively at war with a country.

Only an impudent child stomps his feet and crosses his arms and stops talking.

Here's the next step in required reading... from salon's Greenwald.
