Other than derringers and the NAA Mini's,,,

NAA Minis

I understand that $225.00 + can be "offputting" for most of us. In their defense I felt the same until I bought one just to see...
A friend told me that he spent 4 years undercover and that his .22mag Mini was all that he had for most of that time. He had a jeweler's ring installed in the butt and wore it on a rawhide string around his neck.
I don't carry mine much and shoot it sparingly, but I reall like it. I have the same regard for it as for any firearm which is well made and logical. The times I have carried mine have been off-duty and it was a deep backup for my sidearm. I cut off the front sight and polished the top strap. Sights on something like that are sort of like mammaries on a boy pig anyway.

Check out the Walther TPH.
What I carry is a Seecamp, but if I did want a .22lr, it would be one of these, a Walther TPH or the small American Arms PX22. The TPH is very thin, very easy to conceal.

My favorite small .22lr is my Daewoo DP52. It is a real sweetheart. I like it better than my Walther PPK/S.

I would not trust the small NAA revolvers, but that's me.

Pricey, but Walther or Manurhin PPK/S in .22 would be a really nice pocket gun.

Not so pricey, but no longer imported, is the FEG SMC .22. I bought a couple a few years back and they have yet to let me down. Fun plinkers and relatively small. If you look you can see them on Gunbroker.

TPH is a neat little pocket gun, but mine took a lot of breaking in before it got anywhere near reliable enough to suit me. Also, TPH mags tend to crack feed lips (at the top of the spine) as they were apparently overhardened, so you need to inspect the mag if you get one.

Everybody is different....As far as I'm concerned I'd never trust, or carry, any Daewoo of any persuasion. There's a reason Daewoos never caught on. Their assault rifles were junk.
I couldn't help noticing that the American Arms and the Daewoo are apparent clones of the Walther. I do like the Seecamp and Walther you showed.

Small .22 guns

My favorites are the Jimenez JA22 and the Phoenix Arms HP22A. Both are reliable. The Jimenez makes a good pocket gun, it is so small and light. The HP22A is a better all round plinker.

So I guess I'm going to look at larger guns like the Bersa

I just bought one of those a few weeks ago. Ive shot 300 rounds - 100 rounds in 3 different mags - and not a single malfunction of any kind.

I was using some 15+ yr old cci minimags.

I really wanted a 22lr PPK/s or TPH type gun but couldnt see spending that money.

I also wanted something smaller than a Buckmark or Ruger MK3.

Its not a tiny gun but was the smallest and most reliable current production gun I could find in 22lr semi auto pistol.

Its fun too!

Hello danez71,,,

Thanks for the report on your Bersa,,,
So far every person I have known who has one loves theirs.

When you bought it was it new,,,
How many mags did it come with from the factory?

I do like the fact that it is an exact frame and size match,,,
To the Bersa Thunder .380,,,
I like 22/centerfire pairs.

All I can tell you is, my Bobcat 22lr is an awesome gun. The more I shoot it (1000+), the better it shoot's. What I mean by that is, it used jam and stove pipe just about every mag, but now, it hardly every jams or stove pipes.

Im sorry..... I read this and laughed and laughed.... And yet you still seem to think its a great gun.... So all I can think is it must be so much fun to shoot that it outweights the pure frustrations some would have with jams in every mag. ;)

Im not criticizing but you can see the conflict in your words. I glad you enjoy it and I enjoyed your post... :)

Hello BGutzman,,,

I believe what 8shot357 was saying is that,,,
It took some "wringing out" for it to work properly.

Not an uncommon occurrence with semi-auto's,,,
Certainly not uncommon in any smaller gun.

My former mother-in-law had a little Beretta .25,,,
She had to run many boxes of ammo through hers to make it reliable.

I've had all 3 kinds:
Needed no breaking in period at all,,,
Needed several hundred rounds to smooth out,,,
No amount of ammunition of any kind could get it to work.

We want to say that all guns should work perfectly right out of the box,,,
If we want that we should simply buy nothing but revolvers,,,
The chances are better for that type of handgun,,,
But I've had 1 revolver bad from the box.

One friend of mine owns a Bersa Thunder .380,,,
This gun has had thousands of rounds fired through it,,,
If the Thunder .22 is anywhere near as reliable I'll be a happy Bersa owner.

But I digress,,,
I do want a new handgun,,,
I have nothing against used guns at all,,,
I simply doubt my ability to spot a problem with a used semi-auto.

I can evaluate used revolvers with no qualms,,,
I doubt my ability to do the same with semi-auto pistols.

Bersa Thunder .22, Firestorm .22 (made by Bersa),,, Beretta 87,,,
These are all pistols I have some kind of familiarity with,,,
Ranging from approximately $250 to $700 each,,,
Guess which one is $700.

I'm glad you enjoyed that! I meant "it hardly ever jams", not hardly every (every-y=ever) jams.

Jams have been very rare now, something I wasn't expecting, so I'm happy with it as a range gun. You never know, I mught carry it someday. Enjoy.

Something like that, now jammimg is very rare. In fact, the last time I took it out shooting, I shot a box/100 of CCI Mini Mags without any problems.:D

a little late to the dog fight...

but think your barking up the wrong tree...

think "used" think S&W... think tiny yet really shootable

this "gun" is nearly as small as my NAA mini, yet much easier to shoot... gun is in parenthisis because it's no longer legally a gun, it's an antique...

while older than dirt, these guys are very shootable, typically much better quality than much newer H&A's, H&R's or Ivers etc.

I've now aquired several, & average less than $200.00 each... they originally came with mostly a 3.5" barrel, but I have one that has a 4" barrel, as well as this ( barrel shortened a very long time ago ) snubbie... since I just joined SASS I'm thinking about doing a double deringer type suspender holster set for a pair of these, & bobbing the barrel on another one for a matched pair...

this one is a solid enough gun, that I often carry it with my cast bullet handloads for CCW purposes... really easy & cheap to load for... ( can probably shoot it almost as cheaply as a 22, though I have to put together the rounds...

Post 52 & 53...

I truly meant what I said as a non criticism.... The words as they were stated led my mind an amusing mental picture, I understand you meant something different.

Still - In my life I have had cars I swore you had to sweet talk in order for them to start or keep running. Some of the vehicles I loved and some I hated but in the early days they all had character..

Having something that has a bit of character isnt always a bad thing and sometimes is actually pretty fun.

Enjoy :)

It's all good my friends,,,

I don't think anyone in this thread has taken offense from any comments,,,
I know I surely haven't and hope the same for everyone.

To kind of close this thread out though,,,
I really couldn't make myself buy one of the tiny .22's,,,
The Beretta and the Taurus simply had too many mixed reviews for me.

I was considering a Bersa due to the many positive reviews,,,
And the fact that they had an exact matching gun in .380,,,
But then something unexpected happened,,,
I sold one of my other guns.

With that influx of money in the bank,,,
I decided to go ahead and buy the Beretta 87,,,
I just returned from the Evil Pawn Shop and it is now on order.

So, since I couldn't get happy with a teeny-tiny gun,,,
I went with a super high quality semi that will make me grin reeeeeal big. :D

I know you already bought something but I wanted to reply. Thats a sweet Beretta BTW. Thats another one I didnt want to afford the price on.

Yes, I bought it new.
Came with one mag (cheap arses) and I bought 2 new additional mags at I think $26 each.

I bought it through the gungenie.

It was purely an emotional buy. I didnt even clean it before I shot it. I took the slide off and notice the right rail was dry but the left looked good. I put a couple drops of oil on the right rail and gave it whirl.... and so far so good.

Im not a bersa fan boy at all. This is the first and only bersa Ive ever shot.

After ONLY 300 rounds I'm happy.

I'm still looking at a buckmark too.

You don't know the half of it brother, I bought my first car in Osseo, Mn. in 1982 (1973 Fury highway patrol car 440mag.) my first Magnum:p

keep laughing
