[OT]: They're foreclosing on my house because I displayed the American Flag.

This whole mess sickens me.

What is the reason these by-laws state as to why flying our national symbol is forbidden?

I would go to the media with this, let them sink thier teeth into this juicy little tidbit.

Where do you live at??? When a person can't fly the American flag on the 4th of July, its time to move from that location.

This just makes me :mad:. If you end up having to pay the fine you can still have some fun, and really stick it to those high minded, tight-as$$ed, socialist .... sorry, I digress. They had a case here in Indy a few years ago where a woman moved into an area and bought some horses. The neighbors, for some reason, took offense and pulled out some antiquated ordinance that barred owning horses in the area. She fought it and lost, so she sold the horses, paid her attorney bills, then studied the law. She found that there was no statute against other animals ... so she bought all the pigs and roosters she could afford. Now the bitchy neighbors are woke up every morning at 5 a.m to the best smelling s*@t around. :D

Find something that is not against the rules, but that will drive them absolutely bonkers. Perhaps a purple house with pink shutters and a few dozen pink flamingos on the lawn? You could really have some fun before you get yourself out of there.

FUD - given your various misadventures like going to ask an officer for directions in the middle of a crime stop and now this -

You need to take a common sense pill and stop asking TLF every time you have to fart.

Read some of the great tactical books out there or take a course on such - it will give
you a perspective on risk analysis.

Get real for God's Sake.

You post some difficulty here because you like the strokes you get with your problems or pseudoproblems.

Jeez, FUD, I thought you were kidding when I read the title. I agree with calling the local news and newspapers. Also, contact Rush Limbaugh, it couldn't hurt.

I don't believe they'd be obligated to accept foreign money, though. In fact, the government isn't obligated to accept coins or even cash for payment of fines, so bulk coins might not work either.

As a true friend, I urge you to do two things (both already endorsed by earlier posters) immediately:

1) Get an excellent lawyer. This may -- or may not -- be an attorney available through your employee benefits package. Check Martindale Hubble (the huge, nation-wide, multi-volume lawyers reference and qualification book) for the best specialist -- in the most politically connected firm -- in your area of Florida.

2) Make your HOA appear to be the power-hungry asses they really are by invoking patriotism. Get veterans organizations involved (hopefully to picket), seek out neighbors who are veterans as within-the-HOA advocates, work with local broadcast and print media to ensure coverage, try to get vocal support from local elected officials, and so forth. In sum, get the facts out with the "spin" that's most favorable to you: small-minded, power-hungry, HOA officers versus a solid American who wants to celebrate Independence Day by flying our country's flag.

FYI, I live in a "covenant" neighborhood, but one where probably 70 percent of the homeowners are current/retired senior military officers. We all fly the flag, and many do it every day of the year. I would certainly welcome you as a neighbor.

FUD, please expose these people on every TV, radio, newspaper, etc. in the country. This completely angers me. You flew the American flag on an American holiday and are being fined? I can not believe these people. They have become so enamored with their own power that they think they can get away with this. Please hurt them every way you can. Bastards!

Hindsights always 20/20...dont you ever look back? Knowing this was in the hoa rules did you think to inquire prior to violating the agreement?

I think this problem is probably worse then it normally might be because you might have pissed off the hoa and the occasional tyrant that they form of thing invites....Ive lived in those developments, and never had a problem, most of the time those laws are not enforced unless something is a durn eyesore, trash, uncut yard, junk cars,,,,etc., at least the one's Ive lived in.

Now, that being said, your going to most likely have to pay this bill---consider it stupid tax and move on. Thats not to say you cant fight it you have to determine if its worth it in money and stress. Work your way into that hoa, most of those organizations have ways to change the rules.
Get a lawyer like has been said one that specializes......remember were still a nation of laws and while you have the right to thumb your nose at the law if you dont like it, you also have the right to the penalties.

If you sue them and win, they may be liable for legal expenses. Get a real expensive attorney. Actually, get a bunch of expensive attorneys like OJ did.

That being said, IMHO, ANYONE who lives in a community with its own "mini-government" needs their head examined. You must be liberals, 'cause you like "lotsa government" or something.

There is NO REASON for ANYONE to live in places like that. And if no one did, they wouldn't exist, now would they...?

You may want to expose this case first... chances are that the lawyer is going to cost more than the fine. If you get enough exposure, sometimes attourneys will cut you a good deal if they get some free publicity. I'm afraid that you may be stuck with what you signed, but why the hell was not flying the American Flag a a No-No? I seriously think you should consider publicizing this case if possible.

That, I believe, was in Reston. Reston HOA is TRULY Naziism in action in America today.

But the same is true in other HOAs all around the country. Unfortunatly, those HOAs are the ones that make ALL HOAs look bad.

In many ways, HOAs are a good thing. They protect YOUR investment in YOUR home by maintaining a set of community standards for appearance. They also work to maintain community common grounds and facilities.

But, an HOA that is out of control is TRULY an ugly thing.

FUD's HOA (and I'm saying this as vice president of my 77-unit townhome HOA) is on the cusp of being out of control in a big way.

Pay the fine, consult and attorney and then the the media involved. If they don't like flags, how are they going to react to negative press and TV reporters looking for a human interest story.

Be humble, polite and devious. Have a friend drop an anonymous line to the news desk and see if they don't bite. Having a microphone stuck in your face and being asked loaded questions sucks.

Then when you've won and its all over, sell your home and get the H*** out of there.

Even though I can't stand them : The ACLU would eat this up. If nothing else, it will drain the ACLU coffers.
