You might want to consider these too:

1) HS2000 - Never heard/read anything bad about these. Glock-style with a grip safety. A "must buy" in most reviews. I'd buy one in a jiffy if it's available hereabouts...

2) DAC-394 - a SIG 228 clone, done under the supervision of a SIG (?) engineer . Parts fit the orig 228 to a tee...

3. Taurus PT145 - There are on-going threads here & elsewhere, all praises for it (though denfoote has realized a bent extractor on his, but it still WORKS!). Evan Marshall is testing one and he's ok with it.

Sigh.... so many guns, so little time.... ;)

I'm surprised no one mentioned the Taurus PT-145 sooner. It seems to have all the qualities you need. Price in the $350 range, .45 caliber, 10 round magazine capacity, manual safety, very concealable. I have one, and it has been flawless so far.
If you're in Cincinnati you should check out Target World. They are very helpful and they have a nice selection of guns. I bought a Glock 26 there several years ago when I lived there.
Good luck!

Anybody familiar with the various CZ models? They LOOK like good quality, design and pricing. On a similar thread here or somewhere I saw many people recommending them...

I hear the Ruger is great quality & price, just ugly....

Went to a gun shop last night and looked at a Tarus PT140, P100, and a Ruger P95, P89. All are double action triggers for every shot. I only looked at these due to wanting the DAO for concealed carry, not sport. All triggers pulled like my S&W 586 double action revolver. It'll be bad enough being forced to pull a gun in Michigan. An accidental discharge after pulling it would be VERY bad.

The PT140 is small, easy to carry, has a well placed safety. I liked it till I dry fired it. I personally don't like the trigger. Pulling it back slowly for a controlled fire (like a double action revolver) the trigger has a small amount of binding. I could hear the trigger mechanism as I pulled it back. Sounds like plastic squeaking together (like a squeak in an old car's dashboard). This caused a slight jerking motion of the trigger as it was pulled slowly. Other posts decribed it as "spongy". The trigger guard is also too small for my liking. My finger rubbed the botton of the guard the whole time the trigger was pulled. I pop off a 100 rounds at a time while practicing. I can see the blister now.

The P100 was a different story. The trigger was smooth and consistant till just before it broke over. The gun as pretty good balance, but the barrel is a little longer than what I want for carrying.

The Ruger P89 - manual safety and P95 - manual safety are the same trigger. The P89 is a full size model, so I put it down. The P95 is 27 oz., with a shorter barrel. The safety wasn't as easy to release as the Tarus. But it can be left off if needed because it's the same as their dao model, but with a manual safety which disengages the trigger. The trigger pull was about the same as the P100. But was smooth and consistant all the way back. Pulling it slowly back, it was like butter. I'm thinking of getting the dao model which has the same trigger, but doesn't have a safety, so it would be the same as carrying a double action revolver. The price I got was $390 for the Stainless P95 or $410 for the Stainless P97 (.45 ACP). Their's also a $40 Ruger rebate going on till the end of the year.

A Ruger P-95 (9mm) or P-97 (.45 acp) or a CZ-75B (9mm or .40 s&w).

The Rugers, by the way, LOOK LARGE, but if you check the measurements, you'll find that they're smaller than some of the cmpeting guns, and only slightly larger than others. They're not as BIG as they look. (Their dimensions are very close to that of the Glocks, for example...)

My vote is for the HS2000. I have one and have shot over 600 rounds with no problems at all. It is very accurate, lite, and recoil is not bad at all. It has not evternal safety, just a grip safety as well as a trigger safety along with a firing pin block and drop safety biult into the gun. Great gun for around $300. Check them out and hsarms.com or visit hs2000talk.com forums for owners opinions. I bought mine at Old english just north of Dayton. No one else local had any or had heard of them. $300 + tax.
