Only one...

9mm. It's cheap to practice with, quality JHP rounds have enough power for self defense, soft recoil allows for quick follow ups, and a relatively small diameter allows for high capacity mag guns that fit everyone's hands.

That said, I love my 45's :) Good thing I don't have to choose.

.357 Magnum easily. A revolver chambered for this cartridge is capable of many tasks from plinking with .38's to hunting of deer-sized game with heavy magnums. I can have revolver ranging in size from small lightweight models like the S&W 360 and Ruger LCR all the way up to large-frame hunting guns like an S&W M27 or Ruger Blackhawk with a semi-auto like a Coonan or Desert Eagle as well as a good rifle like a Marlin Model 1894 thrown in as well.

Even though I dont own one right now I would have to say .357 magnum, I 'd get a Smith 686 4" and a Rossi R92 to hunt with. As soon as I make up my mind I'll one soon. I have a short list right now and I can decide what to get next. 686 4" is one of the top contenders. :D

I've been looking at the S&W Governor. It is a combined .410, .45 LC, and .45 ACP. I don't have one yet, but would go with it; more flexibility.

.22 LR all the way.

BTW, and slightly off topic: When it comes to guns, I have been in a hole since the late 80's. And I must say I never thought I'd live to see the day that the 9mm Para would win popularity contests in the USA.

Times, they have a-changed!

9mm.

-Self Defense
-Plinking
-Training/Classes
-Lots of great pistols in 9mm from subcompacts to full size. Even a few revolvers.
-Cheaper than any other major caliber from .38, .357, .40, or .45.
- Ammo is gonna get more and more expensive as the years go on. The 9mm will remain the cheapest and easiest to find.
- Can take small game up to small deer if I was forced to hunt for game with a handgun for survival (not likely anyways).
- When I get much much older with achy joints, sensitive to loud noises, and even more grumpy and crotchety I'm sure I'll appreciate the easy shooting qualities of the 9mm over .357 or .45.

.22 LR

and especially if you include all varieties of .22:

22 Short, .22 Long, .22 Magnum, .22-250, .223, etc.

It's a slam dunk for the lowly pill.

I'm 75 and still shoot the 45 acp most of all.

Jim Page,

I hope my joints hold up as well as yours. I don't want to give up shooting .357 Magnum. Too much fun.

Micro...;
Man are you right. Back then 9mm used to be a joke -- one of those foreign cartridges that was fairly poor at just about everything, just common. Then hi-cap magazines and compact guns came along and made it more acceptable. What gets me is people touting it as anything more than a mediocre cartridge. And in a thread like this? I think pretty absurd.

OK, so, how does a 45 ACP have more "knockdown" power than a .357 by the way? Is it just that it is undefined?!

Its a term that needs to knocked down. No handgun....no rifle bullet, or even shotgun slug can literally knock down a person. I blame movies and Larry Potterfield on the Outdoor Channel for this myth. The only way to instantly incapacitate a perp is for a bullet to reach the CNS or the perp goes "oh no, I've been shot. I don't wanna die. I'm gonna lie down now"

Or use a sledgehammer.

44 Magnum for me. No reason to settle for 357. This cartridge can do ANYTHING out to maybe 125 yards.

On top of that, I could do everything with just these three guns:

S&W Nightguard, Model 329: I don't own this one. Would be a good home defense or largish carry gun. This would have some stout recoil, if I weren't a handloader

The Marlin 1894 is for Hunting and target shooting out to 125 yards. I gain around 300 fps out of the longer barrel, so even light loads are really moving!

Ruger Redhawk is a great range gun. Super accurate and sturdy. Makes full magnum loads bearable. This could also double as a home defense gun or handgun hunting deer.

22LR was a very close second, but I could never hunt big game or have a feeling that I was well armed enough to quickly end a violent encounter with it. If you took self defense out of the equation, I would have gone with 22LR.
