Only one handgun. Which would you choose?

I was originally a semi-auto guy. Now I'm more of a revolver guy. Only one pistol? It would still have to be a semi... preferably a JMB design.

@ myshoulderissore

Nope. No round in the chamber if carried concealed, whatever the pistol. Only exception is where the mag and the chamber are one and the same, ie revolvers.

Hate to say it but if I could only have one gun. It woudl be a Glock 19. I dont own one now (own Glock 30) but how well they perform and their cost its pretty hard to be. On top of the fact you can have 19 round mags if you want it is still conceals well, again hard to beat.

Revolver - because you can carry it in a condition ready to use - just draw and pull trigger.

A carry gun is going to get bumped, scratched etc - it's a tool- so it doesn't need to be "nice". I think .38 or .357 calibre with a 4 inch barrel or less - doesn't matter what brand as long as it works.

From what you posted, you should get the 4" GP 100 immediately.

Absolutely no question in my mind. If I could only have one handgun, it would be a stainless Ruger GP100 with a 4" barrel. Without reloading, one can choose between mild .38 spl target loads up through full-power defensive or hunting magnums. A reloader has even more ammo options. Can't touch the versatility with a semi-auto, IMHO.

@Stile

There is a reason all my prices are in € Euros!;)

Great recommendations, for sure, but no good to me, I'm afraid!!

Get a Man's Gun

9MMs are for girls; and if it doesn't have a round in the chamber, it's for blondes.

Get a .357mag. You can carry .38spl in it if you don't like the bite of the magnum.

@ Kevin Rohrer

"Are you saying that the second hand S&W 62 Lady Smith .357 is less of a girls gun than the second hand Glock 19?!"

America has the freedom of speech, but it doesn't mean we always have to use it at our discretion. I mean we shoud be more polite.

He said .38spl is good.

But, 9mm G19 (Luger) has more power as anybody knows than the .38, even in +P either way. If 9mm's is for girls, what are .38's? Let's forget about the blondes.

Well, the 9mm is in between the .38 and the .357 for power.

Of the choices you have, get the .357 and practice with it,shooting won't be your problem(loading and unloading is the tricky part),it's not that bad and my wife often shoots mine. You can never go wrong with a Ruger gp model and they can be conceal just as easy as a smaller gun.

I carry a S&W 686 4 inch .357 about 60% of the time, and my Glock 22 the rest of the time with no problems.

Mr. Pond,

Here is a link to a video that's been around for a while. It was originally made in response to a question of whether or not to carry an auto with a chambered round. Since that decision has already been made for you by the legislature I'm offering this link to give you some additional food for thought on your choice of what gun to carry. For me, if I were in your situation, there would be no debate. BTW I like semi-autos and I'm carrying one right now in 9 mm, but with a chambered round. As is usually the case, what's right for me isn't necessarily right for all. With that, here's your link:

Best . . .

@ dabigguns and East KY_DO

I take on board what you've said, but....
You may have seen the link above: I've just bought a Glock 19.

Now this does not mean I shan't be getting a revolver, just not yet. I reckon about two months saving.

I went for the G19 as it was a second hand deal that I did not want to miss. It is also priced in such a way that I can conceivably afford it. So this means that I can now also get a revolver.

However, the shop with good deals restricts me to one model and one size that I would consider: the GP100 with a 4" barrel, so that is what I'll get at about 40% less than other GP100s elsewhere!!
:D:D:D

I voted for the 9mm, and still hold with that. I don't know about you, but I would try to avoid killing someone if at all possible. I would think that racking the slide in front of a thug would be a good non-lethal way to make him change his mind about attacking you. If he already has a gun pointed at you, don't you think he'd shoot you before you could get your weapon out of it's holster? Most criminals are both unintelligent and cowards, but seeing you rack the slide on something that could kill them would probably make the cowardice take precedent over stupidity.

You know something, even though I really dislike the feel in my hand, a Glock G22 may be my 'one gun'. For a simple reason: I can drop a .357Sig barrel in and get even MORE power, and I can put in a 9mm conversion barrel for range fun at a lower cost: 3 guns in one! Heck, I could even throw on the .22lr conversion top end. Too bad I don't like the way the Glock feels in my hand [that's why I only own one! ;)] btw, I would never use a 9mm conversion barrel for SD or HD though.

The good news is that with a G19 you could try to find a G23 top end and then do the same thing!

In terms of fit in the hand, I prefer the M&P line by S&W, but Glocks are VERY GOOD GUNS. I just wish someone made conversion kits for the M&P line.
