READ THIS OR YOU'LL MISS THE WHOLE POINT!!;)

This is not about models but rather designs.

Today, after finding that one of my contracts are having budget cuts and can't use me beyond January, reality sat me down, grabbed me hard enough to get my undivided attention and said in a very calm voice:

"Face it, Pond.... You can't afford a semi and a revolver, unless you buy two crappy used guns, but you want nice guns so.....: you're gonna have to choose. OK?"

I answered, with a hint of soprano:
"yup, I was starting to get that impression"

Cash is tight. €600-700 tops ($800-950). That gets you the likes of a Glock, or Ruger GP141.

Before you vote here's what you need to consider:

Where I live, you can carry whatever you can conceal as long as it is not military spec or auto so revolvers and semis are fine. There are no revolver restrictions. A pistol mag can be as big as you like. You can carry a 33 round Glock if you can find it BUT, legally you cannot carry a semi with a round in the chamber: ie only condition 3 or less. You want it for occassional carry and SD/HD/range shenanigans.

So now you can vote in the pole:
if you had to choose one gun, based on the criteria above, which type would it be?
And if you want to justify your choice, you can say why in a follow up post?

I think the 9mm would be a good choice especially when you consider ammo availability and cost. While I may well be mistaken I am assuming that 9mm is readily available and cheaper where you are.

@ BarryLee:
Yep. 9mm Luger is about the cheapest, decent caliber at about €180-250 per 1000 rounds, compared to about €350-400 for a 100+ .357s or even .38s.

Brands over here seem to be Barnaul, Sellier and thingy as well as Fiocchi. I've seen some Remingtons too. FMJ is legal as is JSP. JHP is not legal for civvies.

@ Booker T
When not perforating paper at a range, it would be HD, added security when in the woods with my dogs for comping trips and occasional concealed carry.

A 4" .357 magnum, especially a Ruger, will do almost anything you need. It will be more reliable than you are, probably more accurate than you are, and last longer than you will live.

It's got the power to take down medium-size game at short ranges, if you need, or be an adequate defense cartridge against all but the biggest bears.

But it's also stone-cold reliable and can shoot cheaper .38 specials.

No 9mm handgun can meet the maximum output of full-power .357 loads.

I have only one handgun - and probably will for many years - and it's a Ruger .357 magnum.

Really, I like semi-autos. But for me, I would go with either a full size .38/.357 for sporting/fun purposes, or a .38 snubbie for CC. I say that because while, yes, 9mm is cheaper, I have more fun with 100 .38 rounds than 100 9mm rounds, simply due to the fact that that fun is over faster with my Glock. I have been begging my buddy to trade me his Taurus (SP101 6" clone) for my Glock for some time, and he will not budge. I do get to shoot it anytime, though, and I am now trading in my Glock, and some cash, for a revolver.

You can carry a fully loaded .357 but the 9mm would have to have an empty chamber? Get the revolver.

I voted revolver too... That no-round-in-the-chamber-for-legal-carry-autos business is a deal-breaker for me. Seems strangely unfair the law makes that distinction.

@Isk and CWKahrfan

I absolutely agree. It is a bit daft and pretty illogical, but there you go: the law's the law!!

Apparently, a lot of permit holders just have it chambered and then would just tell the police they'd been chased by a dog or something. Still, I'm too new to CCW and I've worked too hard to get this permit to **** the police off in a language I don't speak well.

That said, if I was deep in the sticks, I'd have it chambered and that is that...

In a way I'm annoyed at myself.
That chambering rule is what is sticking in my throat too, and yet it is probably the least likely situation!! Yet if I did need gun, I'd be glad of the larger semi capacity!!

Honestly..... you couldn't make it up....

I'm not sure what a Ruger GP141 is, but I would go with the revolver. You get versatility, reliability, and durability with both. You get immediate action with one. Go revolver.

You have to have a round that will come out of the gun when you pull the trigger.

I'm an HK P7M8 user so I have never fiddled with flip-off safeties, but I will say there is a big difference between flipping off a safety and racking a slide.

I wish they kept track of how many times this method of carrying has failed in situations. I know that there are proponents of it - but IMO, it's a way to get yourself killed.

IMO it's a choice between carrying a loaded gun and an unloaded gun.

I'd go with the revolver.

.357 Magnum: Hard to beat a handgun that can fire everything from .38 Special wadcutters to full-house .357 Magnum loads and everything in-between if you could only have one pistol.

Man Up Dude

Man up dude. Get yerself a full-size 1911 for range and carry. Don't be a wanker and get shagged carrying one of those 9mm poodle guns.
