One sidearm, suggestions?

Since you want an all around handgun that will do everything reasonable with no external safeties I would check out the Glock or Sig lines. The Sig may be a bit pricey but they are quality. Other than those I would recommend a good DA revolver from S&W or Ruger. Revolvers are not that difficult to conceal, are great for the range, and are quite reliable. You say they are slow to reload. With speed loaders they are nearly as quick as changing the magazine on a semi-auto.

he criteria are fairly open, under $1200, as reliable as possible, semi-auto as that is what I am most comfortable with, 9mm and small enough to carry. If you have any questions, please ask. Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Is "Good enough" OK? Glock 19, 17 or 26, in that order.

Per the OP's original post and reply, I humbly submit the following:

CZ75 P-07 Duty - 4" Extended Barrel

OR

CZ75 P-07 Duty - 3.8" standard barrel
http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=504951912

Small enough to conceal, big enough to not beat you up at the range.

15-rd capacity in a nice, thicker grip. Comes with 3(?) mags

Factory night sights IIRC

You can set it up for a safety OR a decocker. Being hammer-fired I chose decocker - super easy and painless.

My favorite part? Best dang factory trigger I have EVER felt. I haven't shot everything out there, but plenty enough to know what a SWEET trigger feels like.

Oh, and the price ain't bad either. Don't let that fool you into thinking it's a cheap gun. I prefer to call it "undervalued". I challenge anyone that knows this gun personally to say different.

Just buy it. You'll be glad you did. :) Just let me know how pleased you are with it once you've had a chance to shoot it.

Go to a gun range that rents gun and try out a few to see what you like. Advice by others on what to buy is a place to start but if what they suggest doesn't feel right in your hand then why buy it?

There is only one

Reading what you ask for is simple.
Only one gun, its the most accurate in and out of the box, its small yet large enough to carry 8 or 9 9mm HPs
It is the fastest firing production gun made.
No safety"s so to speak.
Eats about anything.
Will fire + P all day almost.
H&K's P7M8

Glock 19 certainly meets the criteria.

Might also want to consider the Sig P320 line. I don't have one but I'm strongly considering a P320c in 45acp. You could get full size 9mm and a compact grip for range/home vs carry or even compact frame with subcompact grip for the same.

I would be looking at:
Dan Wesson ECO 9mm
SA EMP 9
SA XDM 9
SA XD MOD 2 9
SA XDS 9 4" or 3.3"
Kahr P9

...in no particular order..ok, maybe the DW would be top pick.

With you owning a Shield already, I don't think you can go wrong with a pistol around the G19 size. The shield for days when you are dressed down too much to make concealing larger a simple affair... The larger pistol for when your clothing permits carry, and its big enough to be comfortable in the HD and range use roles.

Other examples in this size:
CZ P07 gen 2
Sig 320 Compact

I am sure there are others in this size as well.

For something slightly larger than a g26, the M&Pc is a good pistol. I have one, and while very close to g26 in size, its just larger in areas that make it more comfortable to hold, without hampering concealability. As was suggested, full size mags work well for when it is time for range or HD duties. When time to set it on the nightstand, drop the mag, and insert a loaded full size... no need to unload.

For HD and range, I prefer larger though, g17, M&P, VP9... etc...

You can conceal them with the right carry style, and if you don't wear very light clothing. Its just not as comfortable and requires more effort and thought. Some would carry better than others... the VP9 is one, maybe the M&P as well, though its slightly larger. They feel smaller than the g17 anyway, and the lines look like they would blend into clothing better... So its an opinion, as I have not tried and compared.

I like firearms too much to only have one myself...

CZ P07 2014 model
Bersa Thunder 9UC Pro
FNH FNS 9c
Ruger SR9c

All are double stack compact/sub compact 9mm which can also take the larger capacity magazines of their big brothers for home defense and range fun.

Thanks for the suggestions, I like the extended mags for the M&P, I also like the P7M8, if I can find one... Within my price range!

H&K's P7M8

Great gun, (I own a PSP), but current prices put them out of his budget.

With $1200, I'd get a G17 for range and HD and a G26 for carry. Buy a few extra G18 mags and you have all your needs covered.

Sig P239 with the DAK trigger is one of my favorites.
Kahr K9 is another.

Both have great DA triggers. The Sig is hammer fired, the Kahr striker.

I'm really a fan of single stack carry guns though.
