ONE SHOT STOP (just the facts, NOT a can of worms)

MLeake...don't forget the value of a 22lr versus bear, to shoot your buddy in the leg while you make a getaway from the bear. Also, don't forget the various anti bear sight options...up to and including filing the sights off so it doesn't hurt so bad when the bear shoves it into the nether regions.

Feel free to fill in any cliche's I have missed. :D :p

For a carry load, I don't think cost should be a consideration. All you need is enough to fill up all your magazines and enough to confirm that they actually work through your particular pistol. You would practice with something less expensive.

I'm not sure if this comment was directed towards me or not, but I'll adress it regardless. By and large I agree with you and I'm certainly not one to pinch pennies when it comes to self-defense ammo. However, it is worth mentioning that, in some cases, extra cost does not necessarily equate to a proportional increas in quality. For example, my preferred 9mm loading is Winchester Ranger 127gr +P+ T-Series. This loading performs well in nearly every test I've seen and the last 50 round box I bought cost me $28 IIRC. Now, the Cor-Bon DPX 9mm loading performs similarly, but it is slightly more consistent than the Ranger through certain intermediate barriers such as plywood or drywall. The Cor-Bon, however, costs the same or more for a 20 round box as the Rangers do for a 50 round box.

Given that I'm not an LEO and that the circumstances in which I'd have to shoot someone through plywood or drywall is extremely remote and questionable, I don't think that the DPX is worth the extra cost over the Rangers I currently use. If someone is concerned about the performance of his/her bullet through the above-mentioned barriers, then his/her choice may be different from mine.

I've got a retired cop buddy of mine shot a BG 6X all chest cavity hits with a S&W 3913 loaded with 124 gr+p (9mm) before he took a knee. (literally) He was on Angel Dust ,though

He swore by a 38 Spl. loaded with LHBWC loaded backwards..said he had a one shot stop with that round...but he also said it may have been a lucky hit:confused:

Someone has to chime in and say if he was using a .45 and hit him in the pinky he would have spun around a few times and fallen dead :D

One stop shots are as many have said due to a number of factors being met and luck. Its shot placement and making sure the threat is no longer a threat, so if you need to keep shooting, keep shooting.

The same applies to hunting, as the response with the hogs pointed out. How many times has it been reported that a hunter shot a deer and destroyed the lungs or heart yet the animal still ran a few yards before falling down...
