One gun for each major caliber

I currently load for over 50 calibers...

talking hand gun & excluding the Contenders my current list looks something like this...

.22 Long
.22 LR
.22 Magnum
.22 Hornet
5.7 X 28
.25 ACP
30 Carbine
7.62x25
32 S&W
32 S&W Long
32 Long rim fire
.32 ACP
32 H&R Magnum
38 S&W
.380 ACP
9mm Luger
.38 Special
.357 Magnum
.357 Maximum
.40 S&W
10mm
10mm Magnum
.44 Special
.44 Magnum
455 Webley
.45 ACP
.45 Colt
.454 Casull
50 A.E. Special
50 A.E.

I plan on adding an X Frame in 500 S&W some time in the next couple years, & would like a .480 Ruger as well

my guns range from antique top break revolvers, modern Ruger single actions, modern S&W double actions, & semi autos up to my Automag 5 in 50 A.E.

aside from the two calibers I listed, I don't see adding much else, but specific guns ( like the X frame ) & a couple more antiques

My list...

I've played around with the same goal of having at least one handgun in each of the major calibers. Here's what's currently in the safe:

.22 / .22 Mag. Ruger Single Six; Walther P22

.32 NAA Guardian

.380 Beretta 85FS; Sig p238

9 mm S&W 3913; Browning HP; Kahr PM9

.38 Spl. S&W 637

.357 S&W 66

.40 Sig 239

.44 / .44 Mag. Ruger Super Blackhawk

.45 acp S&W 745; Colt Mk. IV Officers; ParaOrd. 645S

.22 LR - Ruger Single Six .22/.22WMR convertible 4-5/8"
.25 Auto - ignored - don't consider a "worthy" major caliber any more, if ever was. Not saying it can't be deadly (like anything), and James Bond carried at first :). If forced, then Bond's Beretta.
.32 Auto - am ignoring ditto .25 comments. Though choice for years of W.German police, in all fairness the .380 hadn't really found its legs yet to challenge. If forced, then Walther PP, just to be historical. Had a Beretta (IIRC same basically as Browning BDA) for years in the .32.
.327 Fed Mag - Ruger SP101 - ultimate expression of this fine gun. Many will argue it isn't a "major caliber"-yet-and by OP's definition it may not be, but cetainly more viable/on the scene than the .25 or .32 Auto, and it's growing...so I took the liberty.
.380 - Bersa Thunder
9mm - S&W M&P/c full size or compact (Hon mention: Ruger SR9c - with a better trigger than non-Pro M&P. Take your pick.
.40. - S&W M&P/c - full size or compact
.45 ACP - Ed Brown Special Forces (reg 5" or Carry (bob commander)) - given OP's criteria, cannot see not going higher-end here
.38 Special - Colt Detective Special-full lug. Might as well get six out of it in a still carry-able package.
.357 Magnum - S&W 686+ -4" (3" if only gun) Hon. Mention 65LS (Lady Smith) 3" K frame--more carry-able.
.44 Magnum - Ruger Super Redhawk. Hon. mention- S&W 629/Mountain Gun (2nd Hon. Mention--Ruger Vaquero or 50th Anniversary Flattop - just because).
.45 Long Colt - Colt SAA. Gotta go with great history and tradition on this. If I want a hunter-thumper, have got the .44 Mag above,... wouldn't waste the .45 choice on the Blackhawk, excellent as it is. I'd go .45LC/.45ACP convertible if going the Ruger route however.

Since you're mentioning .45LC I'll put in a plug for the
.44 Special - Ruger Flattop (or New Vaquero)...I know the OP apologized in advance re more limited (choice) guns, but, again, no less viable on this list than the aforementioned .25 and.32 Auto,...And like the .327, it may still be considered a niche by some, but it's a "growing niche, has got a great history and could very well be the ultimate SD--esp HD--revolver round, as in a nice Smith.

RE: One gun for each major caliber

22 LR - Walther PPK

.25 Auto - Walther PPK (rare & pricey)

.32 Auto - Walther PPK

.380 - Sig P238

9mm - Sig Sauer (take your pick, even the SEALs carry'em)

.40 - the jury is still out here

.45 ACP - Colt 1911 single stack, 4" barrel

.38 Special - S&W J frame, take your pick

.357 Magnum - S&W M13

.44 Magnum - S&W M29

.45 Long Colt - Is this a major cartridge ? ...have never seen it on store shelves...special order only

In Az (I'm sure 'cause of the Wild West ha), maybe not Wallyworld and certainly not as common as .45ACP, .40 and .357, etc, but most of the large outdoor stores (Cabelas, Bass, Sportsman) usually carry, as do decently-sized/stocked gun shops that aren't just glorified pawn shops.
So yes, "major" caliber you can't find just anywhere :)

Not to **** on the parade here, but I'm actively AVOIDING as many extra

calibers as possible, against the day some wrong caliber bullet gets loaded into

the wrong gun, and yup, instant hand grenade...

Yo gak ---

Was the 45 Long Colt the cartridge of Custer's day...standard issue for the Colt SAA? Forgive my ignorance here.

In the past 10 years I have only seen one guy shooting 45 Long Colt, it was a large six-gun, said it was his bedside gun, he was visiting, said he was from...Arizona...guess it really still is the Wild West.

Yes Seaman 45 Colt or Long Colt was standard issue from 1873 and was still in use in the early 1900s. Its popularity is certainly regional somewhat like cowboy action itself. Also it is a very reloader friendly cartridge and this is probably reflected in it's scarcity on store shelves. I've never bought any of my 45 colts at a store. They all come off my press

my caliber list is small, but I almost have most of the major ones covered

9mm - my berettas, which one specifically I don't know. I love them all..for the sake of this post I'll say my 92 Elite II..

.22 - ciener kit for my 92's

.32 - pocket sized yugo tokarev, zastava model 70

7.62x25 - yugoslavian tokarev, zastava model 57

.45 - STI spartan (I get to pick her up tuesday!)

.40 - had a beretta 96 in .40, but sold the upper and kept the frame as I don't want to shoot .40 until I can shoot it out of a full size px4

no interest in a .25 or .380, but for .380 I'd put a james bond style german-made walther pp(something) at the top of list..

almost bought a makarov to cover 9x18, but ended up deciding against that too..

.357/.44/etc. would be my choices for revolver, but i'm probably 5 years away from starting the revolver part of my collection as I'm just a little young, I think, to fully appreciate the revolver. I expect a s&w or ruger for either of those..

So one of my goals, its to have a handgun for each of the major calibers. I enjoy reloading, and I just like the idea. So if you COULD (you may not want to now, but if money was no object and you could) get a gun for every caliber, what would you get for each caliber?

I'm sure I'll never have the $$$ or the time to get more than a big toe's worth of this, but as an exercise in "I wish," I'm happy to play along. Here's my list of 'druthers:

.22 LR - Colt Ace

.25 Auto - Colt Baby Browning

.32 Auto - Colt 1903

.380 - Imbel Pistola 380 (Brazilian 1911 clone in .380 Auto)

9mm - Colt Combat Commander

.40 - Colt Z-40

.45 ACP - Colt WW1 Replica

.38 Special - Colt Detective Special

.357 Magnum - Colt Python

.44 Magnum - Ruger Super Blackhawk

.45 Long Colt - Colt 1873 SAA

Anybody notice a pattern emerging?

.22 LR - Colt Woodsman

.25 Auto - Bauer Automatic *already own

.32 Auto - CZ-50

.380 - Walther PPK

9mm - Glock 19 w/33rnd mag *already own

.40 - P226 with 357 conversion also

.45 ACP - Para Warthog, already own a full size

.38 Special - sp101

.357 Magnum - Taurus 608

.44 Magnum - Automag

.45 Long Colt - SAA

I would also add a S&W 460XVR revolver just because the rules say "if money wasn't an issue"

And let's not forget a 10mm glock too!

Obsession?

Almost ashamed to say that after my finances finally allowed me to replace the gun collection I sold many years ago, I went a little crazy and it seems I have an obsession with having two guns of every caliber! Only have one .22 pistol but I have at least 2 of every other caliber. In one case 3! Makes it difficult to keep up with the reloading...actually only load for 4 calibers so far.
Did the same with two rifle calibers also. Really have to get a bigger safe soon. Love to shoot!

.22 LR - Browning Buckmark, Ruger SP101, K-22

.25 Auto - Bolt action rifle (the cartridge is crap - might as well make it interesting, with something like a Marlin 800 series rifle)

.32 Auto / .32 S&W / .32 S&W Long / .32 H&R / .327 Federal - Ruger Blackhawk

.380 - Colt PocketLite

9mm - Ruger SR1911-9c

.40 - Nope (waste of money, for me)

.45 ACP - Ruger Super Blackhawk Convertible (.45 Auto/.45 Colt)

.38 Special - 1911 (one of the ".38 Wadcutter" builds - see next note)

.357 Magnum - Coonan (this cartridge is not needed, in my "collection")

.44 Magnum - Ruger Super Blackhawk

.45 Long Colt - Ruger Super Blackhawk Convertible

One down,11 more to go....

I just got a swwweeeettt deal on a P-22 @ my LPS! Retail was $289.95, paid $307.35 OTD! I'll probably order a spare mag at some point, gun only had the one in it. It's used, didn't include the box, previous owner lost it I guess, so no manual either. I just had to have it as soon as I saw it, even though I probably didn't need it, either! Any further info on this gun (ammo selection, holsters, etc. would be greatly appreciated.

An interesting conundrum. Here's my list (pistols owned in bold):

.22 LR - US Firearms 12/22

.25 ACP - FN Baby Browning

.32 ACP - Colt 1908

.380 ACP - Beretta 85

.38 Special - US Firearms Longhunter Rodeo 4.75"

9MM Para - CZ 75B LE Stainless (this was the hardest for me to narrow down - and my choice could change tomorrow based on what I am shooting that day :) )

.357 Mag - S&W Model 60 3"

.40 S&W - Beretta 96A1

.44 Mag - S&W 329PD 4"

.45 ACP - Colt Series 80 Custom Configuration

.45 LC - Colt SAA Nickel 5.5"

Of the calibers I don't own, the Baby Browning or the 329PD would be the ones at the top of my list to get

.22 LR - Ruger Mark II

.25 Auto - N/A

.380 - LCP currently, Kahr P380 one day

.38 Special - N/A

.357 Magnum - several S&W K and N frames

.45 Long Colt - S&W M25

Now, let me replace a few of the N/As...
