GEEZ! Eugene/Springfield is so liberal it's coming out of their .....! I went into town again today with my gun open carry. I just came from the range, and since it's legal, didn't take it off when I went into the store. Well, we, unfortunatly, have a chapter of the misinformed mothers march here. Well, it's a *small* town and I guess we had to run into each other at some point. Here's a breakdown of what transpired:

Me: Walked in, looking innocent. No "torn" or "dirty" clothes. No camos. No facial hair, nice haircut, teeth brushed and deoderant working.

Her: Looked like she just woke up, threw on some old clothes to go to the store.

Me: Went to pick up some Sprite.

Her: Seen me, YELLED out, "HE's GOT A GUN!" (whatever happened to the "you have the right to speech but not to shout fire in a crowded theater?).

Me: Stood still; awaiting for her or other people's next move.

Her: YELLED, "call the manager, he's got a gun and is going to kill us all!".

Me: Calmly, No ma'am, I'm not going to kill or hurt anyone. This is legal in this state.

Her: Reply: "No it's not". I am a member of the MMM and I KNOW it's not legal.

Me: "Yes ma'am, it is legal."

Manager: "Is there a problem here?"

Her: Yelling/pointing "HE's GOT A GUN!"

Manager: "The police are on their way". "Sir (to me), would you mind coming to the back office?"

Me: "I'll go, but she has to come also. I want her there when the police arrive".

We go back to the office. The police arrive, see me (remember, I've done this before), shook their heads and told the MMM person "He's got the right Ma'am". They took me aside, again asked me "Why do you do this?" and then warned the woman that if she did this again, they would write her up for "inciting a riot".

The police are still kinda anti here but they know me (don't know if that is a good thing or not) and they don't bother me. The only thing that I'm worried about is that one of them may get a burr up their @$$ and start harressing me (stopping me, keeping an eye out to nail me if I "screw" up, etc..). I do it to prove a point and yes, it may get me in the end.

Oh, to give alittle bit of background on why many will think I'm a moron: Springfield is a place of one of the school shootings and they just railroaded a student at the same school for having a .22 rifle in his car on school grounds. He said that he forgot it was there after a weekend of target shooting. I tend to believe him.

Good story.

Open Carry=Good

Concealed Carry=Unfortunate Compromise

No Carry=Bad

The point is, whatever the cops' personal feelings of annoyance toward you may be, they acted fairly and did their jobs perfectly. Kudos to them.

And you did exactly the right thing--you stayed calm and allowed her to make herself look like a slovenly hysteric. Kudos to you.

sounds like the woman was just trying to start problems for you. How many people-anti's or non-anti's would really start screaming "HE"S GOT A GUN AND GOING TO KILL US ALL!" while looking and pointing at someone armed? Good way to become the first casualty. I bet she knew it was legal but wanted the manager or cops to give you a hard time-get you banned or something.

you did good.

I was gonna say "Maybe she's stupid..." But that's a given.

Her: "HE'S GOING TO KILL US ALL!"

You: "Yes maam, I'm going to kill you all. But would you mind waiting until I pick out some plums for my lunch tomorrow? These look REALLY nice."

Oh damn, USP, you have MADE MY DAY, sir! :)

Beware the man with the S&W .357 Mag.
Chances are he knows how to use it.

Off Topic, but kinda fits in here.

When using the ***hole epithet, and variants thereof, how about replacing it with
"Clymer"? He's the hole that Bush referred to in his aside to Cheney.

I understand "Clymer" is becoming a valid substitute for the above. It would be great if TFL and other boards made sure it became enshrined in the American lexicon.

Some reporters dream of a Pulitzer prize. Some would like to be remembered for that one "Story of the Century". Hopefully, this is all Clymer will be remembereed for. It couldn't happen to a nicer guy. ;)

Maybe she just doesn't like sprite. :D

Absolutely beautiful.

Remember.. if you don't exercise your rights.. you will eventually loose them.

The only place I am allowed to openly carry (at least, in my position) in the state of Georgia is in my car. You had better believe there is a gun openly sitting in the passenger seat.

Use the liberals own tactics against them. Find a hungry and aggresssive lawyer and see if you have a case against the loud mouth moron mom and the store manager. Personally, this kind of incident would have caused me so much emotional stress that I could not sleep and when I did I would have nightmares. Sexual disfunction, inability to concentrate at work, paranoia, constipation, low self esteem, etc, etc. Might even be a constitutional or civil rights violation here. It sure would be a lot of fun to watch them squirm for a change.

HI! I agree with George Dickel(aW). Go and find the local ambulance chaser and see if you have a case against her for slander. I looked up the definition of slander and it reads as follows:

1 : the utterance of false charges or misrepresentations which defame and damage another's reputation
2 : a false and defamatory oral statement about a person .

This is exactly what she did. The other people in the store (if any, you didn't say. BTW what was the other patrons reactions?) may now see you as the gun totin' nutball and that is wrong.(i.e. Damages your reputation in the community) Also as a bonus if she did say "I am a MMM member and know what is legal" and she is indeed a member you "might" have a case to sue the MMM as well. You prolly don't have anything(legally) against the store manager as it is his store and he can't have one patron screamin' at another without doing something about it.

Good luck and keep packin'(I know you will) :D

Keep up the good work.

She was clearly not afraid, but using "tactics" against you. If she was afraid, she would have ducked.

Great move to insist that she stay. What was the store manager gonna do, focibly restrain you?

Great move that the police told her she wold be charged if she did it again. You are definitely making progress, since they knew you and knew what their response should be. Maybe she will tell her friends that this particular tactic does not work. They WILL keep trying things until they "feel" safe or have their first BG encounter.

Good move USP45usp. You handled yourself well.

She was obviously trying to cause problems. You don't verbally shout at someone who you actually think is dangerous, not if you want to live.

So when are you going to carry the H&K? ;)

All right, USP45usp! What a great way to start a week!

Am surprised she actually went into the "back office" with a "he's got a gun and is going to kill us all!". How did she conduct herself at that point and in the back office? How long before the cops responded? This is great! What was the manager's response?

Give us DETAILS ! Tooooo goooood!

As much as I HATE it when people sue at the drop of a hat, I think I'd be wanting to know her name so that I could consider a suit for slander. Injury to your reputation? Just see if the checkers don't look at you strangely in the future.

Good on you. Best of luck. It's a beautiful area, just hopping with fools.

The "He's got a gun" portion of the statement was a true fact. Okay, so the lady gets points for stating the obvious. She should have added, "Oh my God, he's going for the Sprite!!!" I think this gives new meaning to the "Cola Wars."

Hey, how did she know you were going to kill them all? Did you let her count your bullets? You aren't supposed to let people count your bullets. I am sure that if she checked with MMM, she would find most grocery store rampages start in toiletries isle, not the soda isle. Also, most killers are not Sprite drinkers. You don't fit the profile. Apparently, she was confused.

USP45sup, you are one slick person. I think you could make your life more interesting if you invited FUD to visit you for a week or two.

I'm not the sueing type. G-D knows I should (Not Jewish but I like the way it shows respect) have sued many a time over the years. In a way, I'm glad this happened due to we have a chapter of the misinformed mothers and I'm SURE that I will come up in one of their meetings. There is a TR Team starting in Oregon (but in Portland) and maybe I can enlist their help if they "come after me". I would like for one of them to "put a clipboard up to hide their face" and "accidently" hit me in the face. I like the "in your face" approach but with a calm demeanor to their (mmm) aggressive one. The manager was really quite friendly, he just wanted to remove the "problem" from the main store to the back room. He had called the police after the lady had confronted me and not before hand. To tell you the truth, I don't know how long it was until the police arrived. I was still angry with the lady and her glaring at me like I was some type of drug dealer or criminal. I will call my lawyer (not really MY lawyer due to I haven't paid a retainer but I'm working on that) but I've already used up my free consultation and then some.

I do think that she was trying to draw attention to me and my "horrible, evil" gun. I did think of some retorts but refrained from using them. When I first walked in, I did get some "looks" but nothing more then that. What really surprises me is that during hunting season, I've heard that the hunters will open carry (or even concealled due to the law allows concealled carry WITHOUT a permit if you have a valid hunting/fishing license and you are on your way too or on your way back from an expedition) and no one bothers them. But, the chapter of the MMM didn't start until this year after the 1999 hunting season. It will be interesting to see what happens during this season.

As for the police. They remembered someone (they assumed it was me afterward and are right) that called numerous times during the first two weeks (July) that I was here asking questions and recalling to verify the answers. From what I can tell, they are a pretty good bunch but then again I haven't been stopped for a traffic violation. I know a couple of them by first name and plan on befriending a few.

As for carring the HK, I won't do that until I'm sure I won't get harressed or targetted; I don't want to lose one of my most expensive guns.

USP45usp

Oh, and I would be honored if FUD visited me!
