A S&W can be had in the ~800 range with the only real problem being that too light a buffer is used. Easy and cheap fix.

Alright, how about this kit? For some reason I like the idea of a longer handguard, maybe I'm way off base.

But you will have to put it together, or get a friend to help with it. It really is easy to do. Also you will need to get magazines for the gun. Buy the cheap $12.00 ones they do just as well as the expensive ones. (brand name). If there is a problem with the mag, just replace the spring and follower (cheap and easy).

Why is that not a good deal? Anything else I look at is well over $850 complete...or am I missing something?

85 - 100 for a stripped lower receiver.

Comes out to $665, add shipping and FFL fees, maybe another $50.

I like the idea of that S&W M&P but they run about $900.

I'd go for the S&W you posted in the link. You can add irons for cheap. I know you're gonna go with an optic, but you do want a backup sight system, just in case.

The more I look at the S&W, the more it appeals to me. Everything is chrome lined, including the bolt. No building either.

^^^That would be a wise route to take. You can get a set of backup iron sights (BUIS) from Daniel Defense for a little over $100. And you'd be rady to shoot. You did mention that you would use a red dot or some kind of optic, correct?

I believe I mentioned that a local ffl has the lower receiver for $80.... for a total minus mags, optics/BUIS of $574.92 (including tax on the lower)... bare bones but functional... have a scope, will pick up some mags locally, about the only thing I can pick up locally, it seems in El Paso for a decent price.

Bolt is included in the kit from what I understand....These are the specs...
