NRA is getting on my nerves

"But would things have been better had the NRA not endorsed the GCA-68 when it was being debated?"

Probably worse without the compromise. Much worse in fact. In 1968 the grabbers wanted severe restrictions and the country vividly remembered JFK's death a few years before. Ah, but what do I know, I graduated from high school in 1968 and didn't even own a dozen guns at that point.

if they lock me up in a little box and throw away the key....I will still be doing less harm than any individual or group which actively compromises away our rights.

I guess that's what I can't understand...how so many of you can think that it's better to cede away our rights a little at a time than to do nothing at all. The person or group which does nothing...does nothing. They neither hurt nor help. But a group like the NRA actively hurts our cause.

In the long run...if rights are taken all at once it is more likely to spur a rebellion to regain those rights. When rights are taken a little at a time...liberty dies a slow death.

There is a very appropriate response to the above. It was written by a German Lutheran minister, Martin Niemöller, in 1946:

First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out - because I was not a communist;

Then they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out - because I was not a socialist;

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out - because I was not a trade unionist;

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out - because I was not a Jew;

Then they came for me - and there was no one left to speak out for me.

That is what it means to do nothing. Do something. Right, wrong or indifferent, but do something.

...this is correct - but one does not have to be a member of the NRA to do something. I'm not a member and I am pretty useful to The Cause I believe.

Always nice to find another from the class of '68.

NRA was very active in blunting the runaway train that was GCA-68. I recall the atmosphere being something along the lines of that described in "Enemies Foreign and Domestic".

GCA 68 sucked out loud but it could have been far worse.

Antipitas,

For the record I would like to state that usually I find your posts very intelligent, thought provoking, and interesting.

However your last really bothers me. Let's put it into perspective...

If the Fedgov were to come for the communists today...then a group similar in nature to the GOA or JPFO would shout bloody murder and point to all the legal and ethical reasons why the government should not be taking the communists. In the long run though, if they can't convince enough people that the government is wrong...they have no choice but to watch the tragedy unfold. However, the NRA would shout bloody murder and make the same arguments as GOA and JPFO...but then if they couldn't sway enough people....they would wisely offer up a compromise: "Please leave the poor commies alone...and in exchange we will let you take the national socialists."

See...they have succeeded in saving the commies where other groups have failed.. But the other groups will ALWAYS be able to rightly claim moral superiority because...at least they didn't sell our anyone else to accomplish their goal.

Sorry I haven't responded sooner Danzig, been away on a (unsuccessful) hunting trip.

The problem I see with your analogy is that we did this once before (See McCarthyism). Admittedly, the GOA and JPFO weren't around, but the NRA had no problem with the accusations and roundups that were going on.

To say it can't happen is to ignore history.

To say I'll let others handle it, is to let others lead you where they will. You just might not like the place you end up at.
