NRA: Friend or Loyal Opposition

Sure they do. Too many people like the NRA-bashers in this thread who will sit back and freeload and criticize while the rest of us do the work and get it done.

You never did say what it is you accomplished on behalf of RKBA acting on your own.

So, you pay the freeloader tax(NRA dues) and sit on your high horse?

I am a member of the local Izaak Walton League, my local IPSC club, talk to liberals about the subject everytime it comes up. I take all sorts of people shooting(ammo on my dime) for their first time, I support every petition that comes through my favorite gunstore and encourage my friends to do the same. I call my representitives and let them know how I feel, encouraging others to do the same.

However, I am not a single-issue voter. The Saturday before the elections I walked precincts before I had to be at work. On Sunday and Monday I drove staffers from DC and helped them walk precincts. After that I worked a phone bank. On Election Day I was a poll watcher from noon to closing.

Sure we lost terribly, but at least I DID something rather than just pay the slacker tax.

So where do we go from here? I think a message needs to be sent to NRA that they need to back away from being so close to the republican party.

You have it backwards - the message that needs to be sent is to the Democrat party, that they need to back away from being so close to gun-grabbers.

The nra never ASKS or discusses WHY so few gun owners are nra members.

So, you pay the freeloader tax(NRA dues) and sit on your high horse?
Yes I think that's EXACTLY what he does.

Calling the nra dues a "slacker tax" is perfect.

NRA dues should be five bucks. NRA should create an environment where gun owners would feel odd NOT to join, instead of NOW where only a certain mentality of people join (and no I'm not referring to people who think they "do all the work" like Silver Bull$#!#).

I've watched the NRA for many many years, and BEEN a member, and I've concluded that there are TWO types of nra members:

1. New, optimistic members who honestly believe their $25 (after rebate) will stop Schumer
2. Stodgy, and usually quite arrogant longtime or life members who look down their noses at nonmembers and claim they're "doing all the work" and everyone else is a "freeloader." These people DEFEND the indefensible such as nra NOT referring to a vote FOR the 68 GCA as an anti gun vote (which it CLEARLY was). They defend nra's jaw dropping compromising. They defend how nra has actually helped pass gun control (1986 BAN comes to mind).

While I'm on the subject of that knife the nra put in our backs in 1986, can ANYONE tell me where on any nra website, that nra discusses the ban that was strapped to our backs in 1986. They pretend nothing bad happened. Under machine guns, nra only mentions the 1934 treason (which they amazingly agreed at the time was allegedly constitutional  ).

Vermont Carry does have a good point. If the NRA reduced both their membership fee and their mailings (I do get a load of info from them that they pay a lot to send), they'd likely have a bigger membership.

I'd be much happier if they asked for $10 a year and sent me one mailing a year up-dating on new developments.

NOW you've done it ed 209. Now someone's going to tell us how "all we gotta do" is tell the nra to put us on the "reduced" mailing list or "limited" mailing list, which doesn't work because I tried it twice. I think nra sent me ONE fewer solicitation

Five dollars? Why not two dollars? Or, even better, fifty cents! There, it's settled. You guys form an organization that is as effective as the NRA (you can call it the "Fifty Cent Special"), and I'll send in my fifty cents. When you make a campaign contribution, just make sure to give at least a dollar. :D
