NO GUNS ALLOWED signs????

NO - TX specifically set up the rules of law for posting the carry restriction.

The person who posts the noncompliant sign is the one who has not the courtesy and guts to clearly state his or her opposition to the right to protect themselves.

The signage also is designed to protect the CHL holders from legal penalties for not seeing some of the earlier type signs that were hidden by plants or on the bottom of the door.

Politeness is to follow the law.

Here's another way to look at it: do you really want to spend your money (no matter how little or how much) in an establishment that does not support your 2nd admendment rights? Do you want to do business with someone who might use your very money (the money that you spend there) to make anti-gun contributions?[/quote]

...not really, but I fully intend on finishing that pint of Ben & Jerry's (who do support anti-gunners) Chunky Monkey in my refridgerator. :D Sorry, I couldn't help myself while I was at Kroger.

As for whats on the back of my GA Firearms License:
16-11-127. Carrying deadly weapons to or at public gatherings.
(a) Expect as provided in Code Section 16-11-127.1, a person is guilty of a misdemeanor when he carries to or while at a public gathering any explostive compount, firearm, or knife designed for the purpose of offense and defense. (b) For the purpose of this Code section, "public gathering" shall include, but shall not be limited to, atheletic or sporting events, churches or church functions, political rallies or functions, publicaly owned or operated buildings, or establishments at which alcoholic beverages are sold for consumption on the premises. (c) This Code section shall not apply to competitors participating in organized shooting events. Law enforcement officers, peace officers retired from state or federal law enforcement agencies, judges, magistrates, solicitors, and district attoneys may carry pistols in publicly owned or operated buildings."

Fully understanding this and other laws, I will not say that I have not violated this in respect to carrying a concealed weapon. In fact, I often find that I unknowningly violate it at moments. However, you will not catch me in certain places with one.. (Post Office, a bank, government office, etc.) Each situation is different. I especially disagree with the clause about carrying in a place that serves alcohol. As I understand it, it is legal as long as the restaurant, etc. does not make 55%+ of its profits by alcohol. If I'm drinking, I don't carry. If I'm not, I do. I don't intend on being assaulted by a drunk, just because he is drunk and its unlawful for me to carry. In that light, I tend to abide by this saying: "Its better to be judged by twelve, than carried by six."

God, Guns and Guts made this country a great country!

sedwards points out a very important difference -- what is legally right and what is morally right is not aways the same thing. Morally, I think that I should be able to carry a firearm without a CWL but legally I can't do that. Morally, there should not be any restriction to buying hi-cap mags but legally there are. If there is a sign with letters that are 0.68 inches in height instead of the legal 0.75 inches (or what ever the rule might be in your particular state), you might be able to legally carry but morally you SHOULDN'T.

And if you do decide to go in carrying, then you've showed yourself to be selfish by placing your rights ABOVE those of the property owner and if discovered, you will re-enforce to him a negative image of all gun owners.

Everyone is obviously free to do whatever they want. As for me, I'll take the high road and respect the property owner's wishes and not carry either by not bringing the gun or by not going in. If I feel strongly about it, I may even try to organize a boycott to get my message across. That is MY right.

I will close with this final point ... Maybe the reason why we have so many gun laws in this country restricting OUR gun rights is because we have FAILED in the past to take the high road and respect the rights of others.

Originally, "No Guns Allowed" signs had no legal standing. It was assumed that gun owners would respect the wishes of property owners. Apparently, it happened enough times that people pushed to make those signs carry legal weight behind it.

Under the old honor system, if you went someplace with a firearm by mistake (because you didn't see it or whatever), you did not break any law but now if a sign meets the legal requirements and you carry a firearm, you can be charged with a crime and your license to carry might/will be revoked.

Let's continue not to respect other people's wishes & rights because we can legally do so and we will be faced with even more gun laws and additional restrictions on our rights.
