My nightstand gun is a Springfield Loaded, with a spare mag, 4-inch folder and Surefire 9p nearby, along with an old cell phone (did you know even cell phones that are no longer active can be used to call 9-1-1?) ... my nightstand is made like a writing desk; the flat portion folds up to conceal what's inside ... as I'm getting ready to hit the sack, I open the folding portion and move the gun from inside to the edge closest to me, where it can be reached instantly ... I'm a light sleeper and I have a beagle that barks at anything approaching our house (sadly, that includes every deer, skunk, coyote or mouse that walks by). It's only my wife and I, so there are no late-night surprises; anybody in the house other than us is an intruder who will be dealt with ...
my wife's nightstand contains pepper spray and one of those huge 3-cell Maglites (she's not a gun fan but knows how to shoot very well).
One other thing to consider, especially if you like to sleep au natural. I normally wear just a t-shirt in the winter and tank top in summer, so I keep a pair of shorts and flipflops next to the bed in case we have to exit to our patio from the bedroom. The wife keeps a robe nearby for the same reason ... sorry, no pics available ...
