Night stand gun..Where does it really go?

My .38 actually does reside on the nightstand, it is on the first shelf down and although it is within arms reach I think it would be somewhat difficult (though not impossible) for a BG to see.
I will admit that when I was much younger and lived alone I did sleep with a gun under my pillow.

Constantine - In post No. 21 you said you had the exact same 870 described in post No. 20, one having a 20" cylinder bore barrel. I assumed it was either an 870 with a deer barrel or one of the many home defense/"tactical" 870s. Your photo shows an 870 with a long hunting barrel (I'd guess 30"), a standard hunting magazine and a full buttstock. Your 590 has a pistol grip, no buttstock and an extended magazine. I thought you were comparing 12 gauge pump shotguns with similar characteristics - particularly the barrel length - hence my statement "I am missing something" in response to your statement "way too big . . . ." So, I checked the specs of comparable 870 and 590 shotguns on the manufacturers' websites and confirmed what I suspected - the specs are virtually identical in comparable home defense models.

I have an 870 HD with an extended (factory) magazine. My low cost and very easy method of shortening my buttstock was simply replacing it with the youth model (which fits me better). Having tried it only once, I will never again (I hope) shoot a 12 gauge with a pistol grip and no buttstock.

I keep a FiveseveN with tactical light in the bottom drawer of my night stand, its loaded with EA Protector II and depending on my mood (watching the news will do that to ya) a 14.5" BCM AR15 or Marlin 336 in 30-30 up against the wall between the night stand and bed frame.

This is a great post....As a longtime gun owner, I now have to adjust my nightstand carry because I have 2 very young children. I now lock up all my many, many handguns and now I only keep a Glock 20 (round in chamber) in my nightstand drawer in a Blackhawk Serpa holster. I like the trigger release of the holster as a added safeguard against little fingers. My IPSC/Gunsite training has me keeping a round in the chamber at all times. There are many reasons for this like giving your location away, escalating a offensive reaction by clambering a round, etc.. There are more reasons I wont go in to. My wife has her H&K in a close proximity. I also have other heavier firepower if I have to fall back in another room.

Do others keep a round in their chamber???? I think that would be a good question to add to this thread.

i carry a maxpedition remora with me anytime i leave the house. it has a pistol in it at all times. I keep it right next to my bed for easy access just like i do wherever else i might be when i leave the house

No kids in the house so I can pretty much do as I please with regard to gun locations. 1911 is in the lower drawer of a 2 drawer night stand along with a spare mag. 12ga is in BR closet with 5 00 buck on an elastic butt cuff. A spare 5 rd box of 00 is on the closet shelf. First grand kid is on the way so I'll have to rethink this in a few years, but for now this works for me.

Wife and daughter sleep in the front room ( daughter gets up in the night so wife can get her and put her back to bed) because it is a small one bedroom apartment. Will be different once we can get a bigger place. Until then one gun sits next to me on the bed chambered and ready ( SW9VE) and one in the holster in my pants ready for me to put on if need be( Taurus 617 ) .

First of all, I'm cautious because I have a crazy in-law that would like me and my family gone so that he/she can get the inheritance.

When my kids were little I got used to sleeping with a Glock 17 with CT laser under the pillow so that the only way anyone can get to it is by literally having to through me. Now the kids are gone off to college and I still keep there when I'm in bed.

When I'm not in bed, it is in a locked walk-in closet. The door opens outward. I also keep a Mossberg 930SPX close, hidden but I can get to it in less then 3 seconds.

Oh yes, I do have a dog.

Do others keep a round in their chamber?

Lord, yes. The only time I don't have a round chambered is when I am cleaning or reloading, and I don't take a long time to reload. To me, the night is the time when the need to be ready in a short period of time is most acute, simply because there are people who think of darkness and sleep as situations to exploit.

I use handgun safes for my handguns. I also keep a dual compartment bag within reach that I can grab quickly should I have to quickly get up in the middle and not have time to dress completely. HD Gen 3 G17, backed by some 33 round mags if needed. Also pictured is my old Surefire Incan which I still use, and bedside Syperderco Endura, and 17 round reload. I keep the knife clipped to the bag always, and the flashlight and reload in front compartment...leaving the rear compartment for firearm.

My Sig 229 resides in a lock box on top of my dresser. It has a 5 button Simplex lock that I can open in the dark. The reason it is on my dresser is that forces me to get out of bed, which insures that I am fully awake and aware.

Sig 1911, .45 on my stand and a Glock 23, .40 on my Wife's stand.. No kids at home..:D
and Yes both are loaded with one in the chamber, the way we carry them.

Mine goes in my nightstand. :D

I have a lock box in the drawer of the nightstand. The box is bolted down and the drawer is reinforced. Not 'bullet proof' but it is sturdy. Pick the type of box you like but I like the combo ones. Just practice hitting in your code often (in the light and in the dark.

The box has an extra magazine and a spare box of ammo in it along with the beloved Cougar ready to go.
