"Nice [TFL] Shirt You're Wearing" : Another FUD File.

I don't see any blame to be handed out on either side for this incident. It's a sign of the damned times and the way things are changing for the worse. It's quite possible that a store employee or even a wacky customer called for the police when they saw an obvious "gun nut", that is, to their thinking it looked like he was.

Look on the bright side, at least the deputy liked the shirt!

HukeOKC, why didn't I tell him up front that I has a CWL? Well, when I starting making small talk (telling him about the type of gun I was carrying), it didn't seem to go well -- reading into things here. Consequently, I just decided to answer the questions that were addressed to me. When I answered his question that I had a CWL, he still asked to see it and he DIDN'T remove his hand from his gun until after he handed back the CWL to me.

QTDUS! (Please delete).

Looks like it got you too, FUD.

[ Mal, I'm up to four taps -- how about you? ]

[ Six Taps -- I think this might be a record ... at least for me anyway. ]

Mal, I don't think anyone called it in for two reasons: [1] I was in the actual store for less than five minutes (it wasn't like I was doing my weekly shopping) -- ran in grabbed two items and headed for the express line; and [2] You really can't tell at a distance from the logo that it is firearms related -- it's only when you get close enough to read the fine print.

I just think that he just happened to be there at the same time that I was and noticed the words "firearms enthusiasts" on the back. FUD.

Reprimanded? He asked if you were carrying and you said yes. At that point the officer's safety is on the line. He doesn't know who you are. For all he knows you could be an escaped con. He asked for your permit, saw things in order, and sent you on your way. I don't see what's wrong with that.

I find his actions not only rude, but extremely disrespectful and stupid. Do you REALLY think a criminal is gonna say, "Yeah, I got a revolver on me" casually to an officer? This guy is a bully and should be severely reprimanded. He wasn't in much danger. Besides, he has a holster on his hip, and hand on gun. Do you really think he should be too worried about FUD doing some miraculous quick draw on him and then flying all over the room ala-The Matrix killing ever cop in sight?

This officer is an ASS.

Why he initiated the question was wrong, how he handled it was fine.

It's not the Deputy's job to create a crime. If he had a Reggae shirt on does this mean he could of been shook down for pot ? And why would the deputy have done this in the middle of a grocery store ? What if FUD (no offense here) had been on parole or a wanted man illegally carrying ? The situation could of turned ugly at the expense of nonparticipants lives. If the Deputy was so concerned by a T-shirt, he should have at least followed FUD to his car and asked there, or run a check on FUD's plates to see if he has a warrant or a record indicating Firearm's related crimes.

You are not under any obligation to tell the truth to an LEO unless he is conducting a criminal investigation. You do not have to enter into a discussion with an LEO it you don't want to. Sounds like one of the cops who became one as a power trip so he could mess with people and flex the muscle that the badge gives him. GIGANTIC AUTHORITY EGO TRIP. Those are the ones I like to see get fired.

OH, FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!

"...officer safety on the line...blah, blah, blah!"

What makes a LEO's life more valuable than my own?

Nothing!

Maybe I should ask anyone I encounter wearing such a shirt if they are carrying a firearm. For my safety, of course!

Was FUD doing anything criminally suspect?

NOT!

What escaped convict is going to say, "Yes, as a matter of fact, I do!"

Am I feeling a bit hostile? Damn right.

"WHERE'S YOUR @$!@##@^% PAPERS, SO THAT YOU CAN CARRY THAT GUN?!"

It's just another straw on the back of our demonization.

[/rant, freaking off]

FUD, I'll save the rant. Others here have done a commendable job of expressing feelings quite similar to mine. I shall just say....That is messed up!

This Deputy had no business asking unless he had planned to take you into custody for something else. As for answering correctly, if you didn't have a CCW permit and you would have told him no, under the eyes of the 5th amendment, you could have lied and not been considered a dishonest person if proved wrong. :)

 Oh, Lord!

FUD, I think you got setup!! It seems to me (based on your analysis) that he nicely approached you and asked if you were carryin' a firearm like it was gun-nut to gun-nut, ya know? At any rate.. I probably would have fallen for it too and fell into the same situation you found yourself in. However, in Georgia, we are not required to notify any officer that we have a firearm in our possession (if we have the permit). In your case, I would most certainly file a complaint. Actually -- after I figured out what I had gotten into, I most certainly would have expressed my disapproval. But at any rate..

My small rant.

I got pulled over in Tennesee a few months ago and before the po-po left me, he aske dme if I had any loaded weapons in the vehicle. I looked at him and enthusiastically said "Yeah." (In an "Of course I am" tone.) The surprise on his face was priceless. Before I could mention even mention that I had a concealed-carry permit on me, he said he'd give me a warning for it, but advised me of "the rules." He was extremely friendly (beyond belief) and I thought about writing a letter of recognition, but I didn't. <shrug>

Oh, and what did I tell you FUD?! You did it again:

"(actually, in a bolted down strong box with a simplex lock on it)"

"(From Action-Direct.)"

:D Have a good'un buddy.

Mr. Pub:

LMAO!!!!!

I concur that the deputy had no business asking you if you carried a firearm. Like John/az2 stated, what criminal in their right mind would say, "Yes, as a matter of fact, I do!" Gimmie a break.

Deputy was on a power trip.

I agree ... the deputy was wrong. It would outrageous of him to 'fish' like this.

The day we accept this kind of behavior is the day when we have surrendered to a police state mentality.

And, BTW sir ... you do have a permit for those baby 'Elmo' cookies, don't you? .... ;)

Regards, from AZ
