Newbie gun choice help

A .22 is not a bad choice....but I would add a Browning Buckmark to your short list...and it has the same grip angle as a 1911 ...which is probably where you're going long term.

A 1911 is a great platform ...and available in 9mm as well ....from Springfield and others for under $1,000. There is nothing wrong with a 1911 for a carry gun / I carry a 5" 1911 ...and in a good holster Inside Waist Band ...its just fine.

Every handgun platform requires a learning / training curve...but I think the 1911 learning curve is shorter than most - primarily because the design of the trigger is better...and the controls are intuitive and easy to manipulate. Don't let anyone talk you out of a 1911 - if that's what you want !

Tons of good advice already posted...and little conflicting opinion. Remarkable !

Plus 1 to all for considering the OP's inquiry with respect and honest consideration.

I now own a variety of calibers, both wheelguns and "pistols".

I enjoy shooting my two 22 caliber handguns, A S&W Model 22A and a Taurus 990 more than all the others, simply for the cost of operation. I have a 45acp for HD work, fire it now and then...but that 50 cents a shot (PLUS !!) gets to me a bit. Same with the 44 magnum and 357 & 38SPL. Cost has to be a factor for me.

Here's my Two 22 caliber workhorses...

New gun

I went to the range the other day with a friend and he let me fire his PPQ .40 caliber. I had a blast shooting it so I've altered my plans and decided to go that route for my first gun. I've been searching Gunbroker for a few days looking for a good deal on one.

Today was my lucky day!
