New Ruger 9mm Announced

Ruger seems all over the place with their double-stack semi-auto pistol offerings lately. SR9, 9E, RAP, & now Security 9.

Honestly the SR9 was a very good design hampered only by its silly mag disconnect, LCI fin, and manual safety. It is an accurate, reliable, slim, and relatively ergonomic pistol that shoots very well. If Ruger would have just developed that pistol with features people actually want instead of those "features" they don't, they would probably have a very desirable pistol at this point.

Nah, Ruger's not all over the place. The 9E and SR series are legacy pistols that aren't long for this world. It will not be a surprise when they are discontinued. Recent low prices must have increased sales enough for them to remain sufficiently profitable.

The RAP is Ruger's response to modern pistol trends.

The Security 9 and EC9S are Ruger's response to the budget market, particularly Taurus and the recent crop of Turkish cheapies.

I wouldn't say that the SR pistols aren't long for this world. Ruger may stop making certain models, probably the .40 and .45's are going to be dropped soon, but the 9E is going to be around for a while. The price is so low it appeals to a lot of people.

The RAP is not popular and after 10 years, I don't think it will surpass the SR pistols in popularity and numbers sold. The Security 9 looks to be the next big 9mm pistol for Ruger. It's size makes for a good carry choice or home defense and the Glock 19 size pistols have long been the most popular size in the US.

I was reading elsewhere and apparently it's been confirmed that the 9E has been discontinued as of this year. So I guess it does make sense to release this. Personally I think I'd rather the 9E.

The 9E is already gone from Ruger's website, with its budget-priced slot taken by the Security 9.

With a whopping $10 difference in MSRP between the RAP and SR pistols, the SR series is probably the next to go.

Similarly, the LC9s/Pro models (except distributor exclusives) are gone from Ruger's website, replaced by the much less expensive EC9s.

I would have thought the 9E would stick around given it uses a lot of the same parts with the SR9's. Magazines, sights, grips, holsters... all shared with the SR9. It also didn't have that hideous loaded chamber indicator tab that almost blocked the front sight.

I wouldn't have bought a new one anyway, used ones frequently sell for around $200.

No more LC9s or LC9s Pro? I don't get that, there will still be people that want one without a safety and that can have night sights or higher visibility sights on them. That is a stupid move by Ruger.

Looks like a good basic truck gun. I'm very happy with my sr9, hope it does well for Ruger but I don't get their marketing strategy at all. Lots of similar products

On the other hand, Ruger isn't letting ANY grass grow under the feet of the delivery drivers - my LGS has an EC9S on the shelf right now, for $241.

I think this is a big part of the strategy. For a lot of people who are new to guns, it doesn't matter how many thousands of dollars they may eventually put on or through their gun(s). What often matters is the apparently large up-front price tag. Offering reliable guns of reputable quality in lower price ranges can help people get into it. That's good for them, good for Ruger, and ultimately good for us as more people enjoying the right can make it harder to squash that right.

I am a Ruger Fan, have been for decades. However not all Rugers are the same quality and not all built like the proverbial "Tank" . Some I will not buy again. As far as the Security Nine. I will pass.

The Security 9 is the one new gun Ruger's come out with that I was skeptical about, but after looking into it and seeing some videos of it in action, it's grown on me and I can understand why Ruger dropped the 9E in favor of the Security Six... I mean 9.

The 9E is a large pistol, larger than what people need for defense. The Security 9 is basically Glock 19 size, which is widely acclaimed as being a perfect size for carrying and defensive shooting.

The few fractions of an inch smaller the Security 9 is compared to the 9E make all the difference and while the S9 is about $30-50 more than the 9E, it's money well spent.

I would have to believe the SR9/SR40 are going to be gone soon as well. The SR compact models may still live on as they just a bit smaller than the S9.

I handled one at the LGS this week. I really liked the trigger, the slide was very easy to operate and the ticket was $300. If I wasn’t looking to get a Marlin 1894CST when they are available, it probably would have come home with me.

I picked one of the Security 9s last week. First time at the range today was good. 150 rounds of American steel and 50 rounds of ranger 147 jhp. A few fail to ejects but other than that, shot really well. Trigger is nice, groupings were good. Really like it could see it being my EDC.

I guess to me a number of failures to eject isn't really a good indicator, and not one that would lead me to think EDC. Maybe after I ran a few hundred more and if it didn't have any more issues.

Yep needs a few more trips to the range.
