Need a new 22lr bolt action

I need a new 22lr bolt action because I am not man enough for my .308. I am looking at a Ruger American and a Savage of some sort. I will run it with iron sights and occasionally a scope. This will be used for 100 yard or less silhouette shooting. I really like Savage rifles, but I have a 10/22 and I would like to use the same mags. So I am torn between the two.

What are your thoughts or recommendations.

I would recommend that you select the one that most closely resembles the form and function of your 308, that is, if you are planning to keep the 308. For example, the closest rimfire I could find to the weight, feel, and operation to a model 70 Winchester is the Ruger 7722; even the safety is, "similar", in operation. So practice with the one is as identical as possible as practicing with the other, minus the recoil and expense, of course.

All of which begs the question: What is your 308 like?

I was just joking about rhe .308. I need this 22lr for a completly different purpose. Also i am looking for a lighter gun as well brcause i will be shooting from different positions

when it comes to 22 rifles on the lower end of the price scale its hard to go wrong with a cz....i have 3 and they are all superbly accurate. They used to make a 452 in scout version that was smaller if that was what youre looking for, they might still make something like it in the 455 (the 452 is basically out of production except for some lh models they still make)

I sold my Ruger 77/22 to buy more CZs....CZ452FS...CZ452 Varmint...CZ 455...all make the Ruger pattern like a shotgun ....

I have an American in .22lr, and the 10/22. I've had my 10/22 since 1966, and the original 10/22 magazine (still have it, along with 2 others) works in the American like it was made yesterday. I think that says a lot for Ruger. Anyway, if you shop around, you can get an American for around $250.00, and that's what I paid for mine. I'm quite pleased with the accuracy, and if you don't have a problem with a Tupperware stock, I highly recommend the Ruger American .22lr.

If you're looking for light weight, I bought my girlfriend a Mossberg 802 last year as her first gun and I'm actually really impressed with it. Very light weight, decent sites, ergonomic, two magazines that seem to be quality, and a rail moulded under the barrel. My only complaint would be the stiffness if the bolt but it was cheap!

CZ is a good way to go, the MT 452 was my choice.

If you want accurate for a reasonable price its the way to go.

Nothing unmanly about the 22LR. Cheapskate that I am I always looked at used guns first, as a Life Member of SNM-Sons of Neanderthal Man-I prefer those from the Steel and Walnut era.

I'll second that vote for the Ruger American rimfire, I have two, a .22LR and a .17 HMR. Both are incredibly accurate. And either one will out shoot my friend's Ruger 77/22. At north of $700.00 it's over twice as much as my Americans and are a lot more accurate.

I have three of the Ruger American Rimfires, all are great shooting and very accurate.

But I have an old Marlin 25N that out shoots every .22LR bolt gun I own.

The CZ 455 and 452 are both great choices.

The Ruger American Rimfire is an outrageously good rifle for the money.

If you don't like the Ruger stock, Boyd's makes a nice aftermarket stock for the RAR.

If you like open sights, shop carefully. These days many open sights on rimfires are plastic or alloy, and the don't give a good clean sight picture.

They used to make a 452 in scout version that was smaller

They still make the Scout, and it has to be the finest small rimfire out there. Very nice open sights (hooded steel front, flat top steel rear) and highly accurate (mine is far more accurate than my 10/22 when wearing a scope).
If you want a full size gun, look at a CZ 455 or 452 Lux. Beautiful guns priced right with really nice sights.

I wouldn't let the magazine choose a gun for me,,,

I wouldn't let the magazine choose a gun for me,,,
That's a classic case of the tail wagging the dog.

The 77/22 may or might not be a fine rifle,,,
I wouldn't know as I have very limited experience.

It seems like false logic though to pass what might be a better rifle,,,
Just to have the convenience of not stocking two different mags.

Savage/Stevens are very nice shooters for the money. However, the Ruger Americans are quite nice and mine have been very reliable and accurate. I have had Savages but their magazines can be finicky at times.

The Ruger American does seem as smooth or smoother when compared to Savage bolt action 22LR, as far as the bolt operation, and the magazines have been much more reliable in my experience. Your mileage may vary. There is nothing wrong with wanting rifles that use a common magazine, especially when they work.

On an additional note, the regular black 10/22 mags work/fit much better than the clear 10/22 mags when it comes to the Ruger American in 22LR. The clear ones will work, but the fit is much tighter in the rifle.

"I'd get a Ruger 77/22"

I would, too. First, best, and only 22lr bolt action for me is a 77/22. Trouble is they're about 2-3X cost wise. The RAR is OK as a price point rifle in 22lr but I found the extractor is a weak point on the 17HMR.
