My wife was in shooting range of an armed robber. What would you do?

Everyone should know my reaction. I'm not scared like some. And I know that this guy is hurting someone, who COULD be my brother, sister, wifey, father..

Take the kids and yourself to a secure area, call the police, and be a good witness (BG description, car license #, etc.). If he starts shooting at people, take him out.

I guess it's always better to let the BG shoot possibly kill someone before you feel you need to shoot possibly kill him:rolleyes:

1. Tim's right. We've been through the same FOF.

2. The dentist was an idiot.

3. I suspect those who want to start the gunfight haven't really thought it through, been trained, want to be seen as as the hero later and groove on killing someone (in fantasy). Describing rational posters as scared is very indicative of my analysis.

4. You want to minimize immediate threats to life. Later hypotheticals are just projection and rationalization for starting the gun fight.

So then the question becomes, in what situation would action be taken. If you were in a hostage situtation? Would you wait until someone was shot first and then act? If you are in the store and you hear gun shots a few isles over do you run for cover while others get shot or do you "Jack Bauer" it? Not that it would be like 24 but just curious to what the gut reaction would be.
We have been through the "What would you do in this scenario?" deal ad nausium. There should be an icon one can click that states; SITUATIONS ARE DYNAMIC AND ABSOLUTES CANNOT BE GIVEN.
If you were in a hostage situtation
Now I'm in danger.
Would you wait until someone was shot first and then act?
'I dunno, is he looking at me?

I'm not an actor, and that's not a prop gun he's holding. I can't yell "cut" if things don't go my way. I wouldn't run like a screaming girlscout, I would need to think then and there. My first thoughts are; COVER/ANGLE/LINE OF SIGHT/INNOCENTS/CLEAN UNDERWEAR.

Her first concern should be the kids and herself not about a gun battle. What can I say about the dentist that has already been said. I have a sign he can wear around his neck. I would have locked the door and moved everyone to the safest area in my building. Not encouraged them to go in the parking area closer to harms way.

hahaha Tanzer would check his underwear
j/k Tanzer I had to! But I must ask..why underwear?
First, it was tongue in cheek. Read the post. Shots fired in the Isle next to you. Now start a new thread:
How scared would you be if shots were fired in the aisle next to you.

I am an honest person, and am not going to pretend it wouldn't be a frightening situation. IMO, anyone who says otherwise is lying to protect a macho image or has no ability to fear when fear is proper.
I have been pinned down in a time of battle. It was surreal. Amazing how bullets sound so harmless when they fizz past you, and the terrifying noise they make when they strike the cement wall nearby or the metal pole next to you. The sound of of a Bradley full of your new best friends is pure heaven.
Would YOU walk out of that without just a little stripe across your BVD's? If not, Hail to you, oh great one! As for me, I'm glad to be home.
I never mention this, and will not in the future. I am now Tanzer - blathering on the internet, going back to school, working, and practicing my shooting when I get the chance, and I'm scared to death of being pinned down. You go for it! I'll save my carry peice for protection of myself and my family.

Sorry Tanzer, I wasn't trying to offend you, or start an argument.

But I've had a gun fired in the same area I've been in a few times. Never once had to check my underware. I was scared first itme it happend, but 2nd, 3rd time, shots fired, take cover, and protect yourself.

Takes a lot for me to freak out, or get scared. Take it or leave it. I don't expect you to believe me, but if you don't, feel free to keep your comments to yourself, thank you.

General from Taps, "First time I was in combat, I lost twenty pounds, all of it brown."

Best course of action, save yourself, save your kids. Some states allow you to shoot to defend others. In this state, if you lawfully employ deadly force to protect a third person, and are justified, there can be no civil action against you.

Tac Response

1. Wife hands oldest child the .45 with full mag
2. Wife hands younger child 9mm with full mag.
3. Wife grabs Class 3 AK, M-16, or MAC-10 and hoses the fool. Kids are merely back-up.

What? You haven't taught your kids tac weapons response?
Why?

it's easy to say you were walking into the drug store, oh no! a dude with a gun!
Running across the street/parking lot to get involved in an armed robbery is a lot different from suddenly finding yourself in the middle of one.

I'm not equipped to save the world. What I carry is probably enough to get myself OUT of a bad situation but not nearly adequate for me to voluntarily put myself IN to a bad situation.

Were YOU the target?? It does a little something to your mind when you realize that they are firing at YOU. Please don't tell me your LEO buddies would disagree.

Take 'im out.

In reply to Thunderhawk88's "The only thing really scary are fools who become Rambo because they carry a gun."
Well, I, for one, am a combat vet who is sick and bloody tired of people cowering and waiting for the cavalry to arrive and save their sorry asses.
If no one takes a stand, no one can claim to have done the right thing in the face of wrong.

I've been shot at, I've shot back and lived to tell the tale. Ain't no way I'm gonna allow some wacko loser to possibly kill an innocent person while committing a robbery, just because I'm too chicken to stand up and defend that which I believe.

Use a gun in a crime, take yer chances on being sent straight to Hell.

^ +1. I couldn't feel right about knowing I let people die by my inaction. If I were/am convinced no action on my part would be useful and change the outcome then no action is the right decision, but why assume that to be the predominant case? Nobody seems to talk too much about moral fallout: how do you like telling families of people who are killed by said maniac that you could have saved them but chose to do nothing? How do you like telling yourself that?

Then take the oath and become a LEO. A CCW is a permit to carry, not a badge. No one said "cower and wait", but charging in to be the "Rescuer" may make the situation worse.

The ONLY time you engage the badguy is when your life or limb, or the life or limb of your loved ones is directly threatened. Outside that, you are a test pilot.

If I am in a crowd that comes under fire in a Mass Casualty Incident, I will return fire because I am directly threatened. Would I do it if I came across such a thing? No. I would get me and mine to safety and call the cops to provide them with what I can. The problem with that is what if somebody else in the crowd has already engaged him and you see the good guy drop the bad guy, but you don't have a schedule...
