My two carry guns...which would you chose?

none of the above.................

1. not a big fan of semi autos

2. S&W revolvers are A+...........however, model 686 loaded with 357 is a. to heavy and large for ccw :( and b. more recoil and power that what you need:confused:..........a .357 round may go through the BG and on into something/body else.

I dont know, its up to whoever is carrying the gun to decide wheter its too big or heavy...relative to the g23(a very popular carry gun), it is very similar overall in size, and not that much heavier. The muzzle end and the trigger area are much smaller on this gun compared to the Glock, so I find it fits against my body more comfortably. I have also been carrying it with Winchester Supreme Elite 38 Special hollowpoints. I find those very soft to shoot and accurate...I am very happy so far:cool:

I've been thinking about this and have the consumate answer...

Drop in a 357sig barrel into the 40s&w Glock & you have solved your delemma!
Your are carrying 14 rounds of 357(sig) in a glock. What could be better? ...OK, sex with someone other than your wife and that really good dark imported German beer, but who's really asking?

My vote goes to the Glock.

As others have said .40 has more rounds and is
a very capable caliber.

Firing either indoors will hurt but, the magnum
will be far worse.

I'd pick the glock. More ammo, easier to carry and shoot.

You are right about at least one point:D
The Glock does have more amo, no doubt, but honestly from what I have found so far, the 686 is more comfortable and easier to hide for me, even in shorts and a long t shirt....while heavier, the muzzle, frame, and grip are smaller and more rounded, and the gun fits great on my waist...I have compared the two in the mirror and the Glock you can see a bit of printing, the 686 not so much...the weight doesnt bother me in the slightest....

I also have found that I have a knack for long double action trigger pulls....why, I have no idea, I have much more time through Glocks than anything else...Glocks are what I learned to shoot on, yet I find that as I try other guns, I shoot them just as well if not better(in the 686 case)...38 specials, 38+p, or 357 magnum, I shoot the 686 as accurate as any gun I have ever picked up...and I have been shooting it exclusively double action, no cocking of the trigger to make things easier:rolleyes:
Reloading and more practice shooting rapid fire are an absolute must at this point, but so far I am in awe of how good a gun this 686 is...I will always love my Glock but this S&W is in a whole other league as far as Im concerned......so far at least;)

This is a very valid concern, I hear what you are saying(at least till I have to shoot a 357 inside a house or car)...that being said, I would rather have hearing damage and still be alive than to be dead and have no senses at all...hearing damage is the least of my concerns when it comes to a carry gun...in the very rare cicumstance that I ever have to use my weapon in that type of senario, I will be happy to walk away with ringing in my ears rather than carried to the hospital on a stretcher..

Also, I am for now going to be carrying 38+p's, at this point I can shoot them about the same accuracy wise as 357 but the recoil is alot less and I can keep the gun on target alot easier...I feel confident in thier stopping power, and need more time with the 357 to get proficient with it...the 357 mag is one hellacious round, the difference compared to 40 S&W is HUGE, I dont care what anyone says...I have seen the difference in person, in what it does to steel and wood, and its a big difference...7 rounds in the gun ready to go, with 7 more in a spead loader makes me feel pretty good;)

I have a Glock 30, and a 2.75" Ruger Security Six. Not too different from what you have here. I carry them both, but, I like the Ruger better. It is more comfortable, in a Smartcarry. I never know it is there, ditto for the Glock, just that the revolver shape is more comfortable.

Hmmm, , auto pistol or .357mag wheel gun...

Hmmmm... If only there was some way to combine them both together....

How about the new Coonan arms .357mag pistol on the 1911 pattern?
Now taking pre-orders for the low low price of $1199 (full retail).

Sorry, couldn't resist. I've always wanted one and after passing on them the first time around, have been kicking myself ever since.

Ballistically, the .357mag will be just a tad more powerful than a .40S&W even with the handicap of the 2 1/2" barrel. Not a lot more, but a bit. But it will be more noisy indoors and will have significant flash if shot at night. Either will take out more bad guys than you are likely to encounter as long as you shoot to control with COM hits. One is likely to make a pacifist out of most BG's and 2 will certainly do it. Carry either or carry both and make a statement.

I do carry a S&W 442 as my backup pocket gun. This gun is invaluable to me, as sometimes its too hot to cover up and carry my full size S&W M&P 45. Definately, a must have, in my opinion.

MonsterB,

Either gun you have, if shot well, will do fine for most defensive use.

BUT, with the idea of gangs near by, I'd pick the Glock and keep the Smith at home as both a house gun and a secondary gun if your primary is taken by police for evidence (that is you used it to defend your self!)

I might also invest in a Smith 642 as a backup for that Glock!

no gangs nearby, unless you count the two packs of squirrels that have a rumble in the back yard once or twice a week...I dont know what the f is up with those things but they have issues..Or my buddys MC gang, they all have guns but Im 100% certian I would outshoot every one of them them every day of the week...
My carrying is mostly for general protection, I dont live in a bad area, but anything can happen...I also encounter large critters while camping and being in the NH mountains, so that is 50% of my concern...the rest of why I carry is just to be prepared for the unexpected, I may not be the smatest guy in the world but I know enough that you never know whats gonna happen next, the next minute, day, or year...that being said, you better be prepared if you come trying to get whats mine late at night....;)

Okay, since you wrote this—
I am honestly more concerned with 4 legged bad guys, as I do alot of mountainbiking and camping in the mountains...just last summer we had a wild boar digging around outside our tents one night, theres wolves and cayotes around, that kind of thing...
—now I have an opinion: the 686. Stuff it with some Buffalo Bore 180 gr. hard cast LFNs.

I'd choose the Glock. I'm not a fantastic "under-pressure" shooter, and if movement/evasion is involved, then those extra shots could prove invaluable. (and life saving)

Tough life...you have a beautiful blond and a gorgeous redhead to pick from.

Ménage à trois!

At least they won't start dating each other in this case...
