My next crappy, cheap A, POS handgun!

Well after endangering my reputation, and username by offering the winning bid at a silent auction for a KAHR Arms CM9 I now need to redeem myself as a buyer of junk! So, with a handfull of Bass Pro Shops gift cards, about $30 in rewards points, some winning scratchers tickets, and change in a desk drawer I plan on making a trip to BPS. I just got the Father's Day flyer, and right there on the front page is one of my short list "what the heck" specials. A Taurus PT22 Poly. I have no practical use for this tiny Bull gun except I just plain like the look of it. I haven't shot one, but did hold one a friend has. To me it has a very nice feel, and I think it would be a lot of fun to shoot. As far as a use other than plinking I guess it could beck up my Elsie Pea that now backs up my CM9 that is a backup to my Springer XD40 SC!:D
I haven't seen a lot on TFL about this particular pistol, but have seen some pretty good reviews, and videos. I also read that the PT22 Poly is made in the USA.
Then as I turned the pages I saw a Rough Rider 3 3/4" "Birdshead". Decisions, decisions? I like my 6" RR, and it is a lot of fun. the birdshead grips have always interested me, but the Taurus is on my short list after all!
BTW, to the "rimfires aren't for SD" and "Taurus is junk" crowd, don't waste your time telling me how stupid I am for wanting a Taurus PY22 Poly!

Hello Cheapshooter,,,

I purchased the 22-PLY and the 25-PLY just a bit over a year ago,,,
Didn't really have a need for the .25 but they were so cheap,,,
I figured what the heck and got the pair for $201.00 each.

So far mine have been flawless performers.

I used 100 rounds of CCI MiniMags as the break-in rounds in the .22-PLY,,,
Now I use Federal Bulk Pack from WalMart,,,
It has never had even one failure,,,
I shoot it a lot 'cause it's fun.

I know I am well over 1,100 rounds,,,
I keep track of ammo and it's in it's 3rd bulk pack.

One thing I am religious about is keeping it lubricated,,,
I don't know if it's the open top slide or what,,,
But any oil I put on it seems to dry out.

I just clean/lube it after every use,,,
It disassembles easily so it's no problem at all.

To me it has a very nice feel, and I think it would be a lot of fun to shoot.

You are correct there,,,
It's a smallish natural pointer,,,
You should be able to hit clay pigeons at 15 yards.

It's DAO with a longish trigger pull and reset,,,
But it didn't take long to get used to it,,,
I am surprisingly pleased overall.

The 25-PLY is just as reliable,,,
I only have about 150-plus rounds through it,,,
Ammo is not cheap so it doesn't get as many trigger pulls.

All in all I believe if you get one,,,
You'll find it to be a very pleasant range toy.

A young lady of my acquaintance asked me about handguns,,,
I took her to the range and we shot the PLY, Bersa's, Beretta's, and CZ's.

She wanted the smallest gun on the market,,,
I loaned her the .22 PLY to take her CWL class with,,,
I'm not by any means advocating a .22 for self defense,,,
But she was unshakeable in wanting a tiny pistol for her purse.

She ended up buying a .22 PLY and has it loaded with MiniMags,,,
She lives way out in the boonies and shoots hers several times a week,,,
Her little gun performs as well as mine as she too has had zero malfunctions.

I will never buy another Taurus revolver after the two bad ones I had,,,
But the PLY pistols were so inexpensive and cute I had to try one.

I do not regret my buying decision in the least,,,
When a pocket pistol is all I can carry,,,
I reach for the PLY 'cause it works.

Actually Cheap I greatly admire your gun buying philosophy and process. Especially the gift certificate, change from the drawer stuff. It made reading about your next purchase more entertaining than the usual should I buy the nitron or the stainless post.:D

Phoenix Arms .22 my old man has one. He loves it..I like it a lot too.
Ah, but you missed the point. I don't think BPS has the Phoenix, so it wouldn't fir my buying (for close to nothing) plan.

It's worked well for me. A few of my BPS, and Cabela's great deals by using points, and gift cards are. A Henry Golden Boy 22 Magnum with $275 out of pocket. A Beretta 92fs fo about $200 of my money out the door. A Glock G20 that I had to kick in about $100 after the rebate for using my Club Cabela's Visa. A Cimarron 45 Colt for under $200, a Browning Buckmark Camper at about two and a half, and my best so far was a Remington 870 Express 18" 7 shot for the grand total out of my pocket of $0.00. I love free guns!!!:D
The big thing is while I use the BPS, and Cabela's Visa cards for most purchases, I don't buy things on credit that I don't have the cash in the bank, or monthly income to cover. therefor I pay off the balance every month with out any interest!

I had the PT25 that I gave to my daughter when she was in college and had late classes. I ran 250rds thru it before I gave it to her and never had a failure. I told her if someone tried to get her and showing the gun didn't scare them off then empty the mag at them and drive away real fast. She is now married and living in PRK and I have the gun back. Still shot it on occasion.

Different guns with exact same internals,,,

The Taurus 22-PLY (Polymer) and the 25-PLY,,,
Are the polymer frame versions of the PT-22 and PT-25.

I believe the same magazine (caliber specific) is used for each gun,,,
I ordered a spare mag for each of my PLY's and the people at Taurus said they use the same mags.

I should've taken a picture. I shot one of the Taurus polys today to diagnose failures. The group was just under 2" at 20'. Not bad for a small gun with a creepy trigger and rudimentary sights!

FWIW, the failures were caused by wretched ammunition. The gun fed fine with Mini-Mags.

Needless to say, the owner was tickled pink.

I've had a PT-22 for quite some time now, and it's a lot of fun. Bought it originally for the wife, as her hands wouldn't be able to manipulate a slide and with the tip-up barrel, there's no need. Since she couldn't even use this one, I took it and played with it. It fires Yellow Jackets with aplomb even though Taurus advises against truncated cones. It's a great little .22 that I'll never sell.

I have a BERETTA 21A . It has the da/sa trigger that the taurus doesn't have but it is a coppy cat company.
