My 686 Pro has a "feature"!!

Good thing you didn't make that bet.

Jim

I'm a betting man, but not a fool!:D

I'm a little surprised they would let him keep it without even seeing it in person. That, and I would think they would want to bury it away forever.

To me it just seems to unbelievable, I'd like to see the gun with the new cylinder installed with the old cylinder next to it to believe it.

Typical new made firearm. A lot of new firearms are not right out of the factory. I had a new Colt 1911 that would not fire. The sear spring was too short to engage the diconnector. I buy older firearms in vg condition and hardly anything new.

I'll post pics when I get it back. Count on it.

To me, if S&W doesn't want the cylinder back they are not concerned--or just don't care, period!

I think at this point it may have more to do with the 'publicity' of this particular incident than anything else...

You might be right. When I mentioned on the phone how many firearms forums this incident was featured on and how many views (close to 20,000 by now) those threads had gotten, I got the distinct impression that S&W knew all about it. And they didn't seem to want to talk about it very much. :o

Anyway, the gun is packed up and I'm waiting for FedEx to collect it.

Good luck, I hope you can get that unfluted cylinder like you want. You might want to call them when they get it to remind them. Even if they charged you a little more I'd still get it, depending on how much though. The cool factor would be priceless.

Thank you giving us the chance to make this right for you.

My response:
Despite some of the comments I read on firearms forums, I never had any doubts about the quality of your guns or your service. All my wheelguns are by S&W and I expect that won't change. Thanks!!

Update – 20 January:

Well, as of today, S&W has had my gun for two weeks. Considering the fact that it’s the subject of distinctly unflattering threads on 15 different firearms forums and S&W’s Facebook page, I thought I might get a little quicker action.

Guess not. I haven’t heard a word.

I know its a long shot but hopefully its taking time because they are getting your unfluted cylinder ready :).

EDIT:

Japle, you are a good man!!

Agreed, its rare too see someone give a company the chance to make things right especially reading about it on an online forum.

Don't feel bad. My item sent back for repair is at exactly 6 weeks from receipt of payment.

To be fair, they told me the part is "backordered" and they took the last week of December off.

I think you will have to call them if you want an update; at least I have found this to be the case. They ask for an e-mail address, but don't seem to like using it. I guess that's just the way it is.

It could be that due to the high-publicity nature, they want to make sure and get it right. Or it could be that they're just slammed from putting out too many guns too fast with the buying frenzy and the returns are catching up with them. I can't say.

Folks, I spent 11 years doing final QC on medical equipment that was used in cardiac cath labs, where you go to have an angioplasty done to open a clogged artery.
The QC on this gun is the equivalent of me letting a device go out the door with test software loaded that would show the patient’s vital signs as being normal no matter what.

If I did that, even if no one was hurt, do you think I’d keep my job?

To tell you the truth, when I first noticed the screw-up, I laughed. I thought it was funny. I don’t think it’s funny anymore. The more I think about it, the madder I get. I doubt I’ll be in a better mood when someone from S&W contacts me after the first of the year.

You're right to be mad. If someone was a first time revolver buyer (like me) and didn't know what to look for, and loaded that puppy with high power defense loads, the gun could well fail at a life-ending moment.

I hope they give you your unfluted cylinder and be snappy about it!

Quick question though. Why does unfluted cost more and is a custom option? I know it's stronger and looks awesome, but isn't it actually LESS machining they have to do?

i would have never noticed... i am soo checking right now

whoo... my flutes are good.

(S&W) though i did notice that my 28-2 the cyl stops are inline with the cyl's (and the bolt is centered to the bottom strap), my model 60-14 they are inline with the flutes (the bolt is offset to the right), my 325 (performance center) is inline with the cyl (the bolt is centered).

rugers seem also to place it in different spots:
SP101(.357) is off set the the cyl and the flute (bolt is FAR to the right)
super blackhawk .44 (not fluted) is inline with the cyl (bolt centered)

Dan wesson 15-2s are inline with the cyl (bolt centered)

Just checked an early 90's SBH, and the stops are not centered , and what you are calling the 'bolt' is offset to the right on this one...
