Really? My guess is that this 68-year old man's word is FAR more trustworthy than those four miscreant's word will ever be...especially since the OP has already stated that the sheriff is already familiar with them and their prior antics.

Agreed. But in reality the court would let them off because this is what our society has turned in to. A lawyer would squirm them through the system and it would have cost the old man a lot of money with no positive outcome. It would have been better for the world if he had permantently "stopped" them.
 
should press charges

Sorry to say pressing charges in most District Courts is a waste of time.Most get slaps on the wrists and continue their lives of criminal activity.Too bad the Govt. doesen't harness the power generated from the revolving doors of most court houses.
