Must have pistol for 550$ or below

Right now I'm between a Ruger GP100 4in, and a M&P 40 or 45. I have a M&P 9C and love it, so I'd like to add a big brother to the collection.

Nothing wrong with a Ruger GP100 or a Smith and Wesson K frame 357. I have them both and like them. You might take a look at a S&W 40VE sigma for a semi-auto. I have one and it is a excellent SD semi-auto. If you are fond of revolvers then you should not have a trouble with a Sigma. Double action only with a longer and heavier pull trigger. They are accurate and best of all you can buy one for around $350.

Good luck,

Really leaning towards the M&P 45C. If it is anywhere near the pistol my M&P 9c is I will love it. I know Glocks are great pistols, there just not my cup of tea. I think they are ugly as sin, and to some that doesn't matter, but I hate ugly guns. At one point this summer I'll be picking up a GP100, just not right now. I like the CZ's, but my next 9mm is going to be a Hi-Power, so I'll just wait.

Basic handgun battery...

I'd think every true blooded American gun owner would have a few basics;
a J frame size .38spl/.357magnum, a 4" barrel .357(K-L frame), a 1911a1 .45acp single action, and a semi auto high cap 9mmNATO(Browning HP, M9-92FS, a Glock 17, Ruger SR9, etc).
Other great sidearms/handguns are out there; 4/6" .44magnum, .357sig/.40/10mm semi auto pistol.

Among the many good choices out there I would pick up a cz75b or a ruger gp100 at that $$ limit. Both will last more than a lifetime if taken care of.

RIA

How about a Rock Island Armory Tactical 1911. 45 ACP , beaver tail, light weight trigger, commander hammer and nickel finish.$499 at Buds shipped $25 ffl and a grand total of $524 .

What the heck is the primary use for the gun?!
It is difficult to just suggest random guns for no reason. You're just going to get a variety of stuff for the price.

For plinking? GSG5
You want a "tactical" shotgun? Saiga-12
CCW? Kahr CW series.
Something Historic? GI-style 1911
Revolver? 442

A little more info would help.

A Peacemaker (clone to fit in the $550 limit). The gun that won the West. I have several duty guns and they are just tools of the trade to me, but I love my Cimarron Artillery model in 45 long colt. It goes well with my real Wincheter 1892 (made 1895) that was my great, great grandad's saddle gun.

These general type questions always bug me a little - what do you want the gun for? Self defense. target shooting, buffalo hunting, what?

Really leaning towards the M&P 45C.

This is the right idea. I have one and it's amazing. I'm about to enter it into the carry rotation as soon as I pick up a decent holster for it.

Mine has been flawless, impressively accurate, and all around fun. I'd recommend them to anyone.

Figuring it is a handgun, since we're in that forum, I would also vote for Ruger, unless you want 1911 and new, then RIA. If you are around a range that has rentals you might try several and see what you like.

At $550 there are plenty of options. Depending on what you need a handgun for this price range is not a problem.
