Biggest issue I've seen with the .22LR is misfires. The .25 ACP IME is much more reliable. That being said, CCI seems to produce the most reliable .22LR ammo - perhaps Eley is as good, just have not seen as much Eley shot as CCI.

.32 Auto is almost certainly indistinguishable from .380 Auto in the perception of the BG, but the difference will impress the shooter very palpably. Guns of (very nearly) the same small size can be obtained for either caliber, but for extremely small and light guns, such as the KelTec P3 and its knockoffs, I think .32 Auto is the more practical.

As for .22 and .25, .25 Auto has been dispatched to the dustbin of history where it belongs. .22LR is still what it has ever been, but the mousegun is, I believe, inherently a weapon for fighting and .22LR is suboptimal in that role.

I prefer the .32ACP also due to ease of follow-up shots, and less likely to jump out of the hand with a loose last-second grip.

penetration is the same as .380; so we're back to shot placement.

rimlock is a total non-issue as long as your cartridge OAL as in spec and fills out the magazine properly. I carry Fiocchi ball also like another gentleman had mentioned. Good stuff, 100% function out of my p32.

What kind of mice are you guys facing that you need a .380 for?

Mouse guns are for fun, IMO. Apparently local mileage here would differ.

Mouse gun in what platform? I'm a revolver guy so I choose the 22 magnum. But if your into auto's the 22. mag is not going to do it. Then I'd say the .25 or .32. I really dont see the .380 as a mouse gun. It does bridge a gap between mouse guns and traditional sized defensive caliber guns. A step down from a standard pressure .38.

Some of today's 380's are as small as any 25's or 32's. So why not have a moose of a mouse!

My primary is a 1911, . . . a .380 Bersa Thunder is the backup, . . . and my son's Browning Buckmark .22 rounds out the trio I would feel comfortable carrying under most circumstances.

My greatest reluctance to the .22 rests only in the "ignition" question, as just about all the "today" .22 rounds seem to have too many duds in the box.

That said, however, . . . if the other two were not available, . . . the Browning is in my mind a solid choice, . . . carrying a spare mag.

When I practice with the 1911, . . . all shots are COM, . . . .380 and .22 are all head shots, . . . center of the pumpkin.

May God bless,
Dwight

380.

But a 38 special snub means five shots for sure with no possibilty of a feeding failure.

And you are looking at about twice the meager power of the 380 especially in 38+p loadings.

And the very light Smiths,Ruger and Taurus snubs disappear in a pocket almost as well as a 380 semi auto.

I own a old Mauser HSC but it only likes brand new fmj rounds and even then it's picky-(can't say it on this board).

I'm less enthused about small autos as my age gets up in the mountains.

Although,a 1908 Colt 380 is still a must have on my must have list.

I just wished Smith would buy the rights and remake that gun or Colt brought them out again just as they were made all those years ago.

But then they'd probably cost $1500.

My mouse gun is an LCP. With the right cartridge the .380 offers enough penetration and power to be considered a self defense round. I prefer to carry a Smith 640 for the extra power and reliability, but have to admit the LCP is one of the most comfortable pocket guns you're gonna find and qualifies as a mouse gun.

Mouse Guns

I have a Kel Tec P-32 and a Beretta Tomcat Inox .32 cal. Both are small, shoot tight groups at ten yards and the ammo cost is much less than .380 and recoil is mild.
