Most ridiculous mark up you've seen?

So many people I have had to tell in the last year "It doesn't mater if you paid X amount of dollars for it when you bought it. It's only worth x amount now."

One of them is a good friend of mine who paid nearly $2000 for a Sig P556 and now wants to sell it. I keep telling him that is asking price is more than I can buy a new one for.

Small potatoes, all of the above.

When I was living in the PRK, I saw $150,000 houses sell for a half mil. People bought them. Now they're back down to pre-bubble prices and folks are stuck.

Not guns, but the OP didn't specify guns ......... ;)

This is a very interesting post.
Agree whole-heartedly on all firearms at Gander Mountain. I continue to wonder what they are thinking.

Also, concur with most of you after the 08 election. Primers and Powder prices skyrocketed and were almost impossible to find.

I have seen some unbelievable markups at gunshows and Gunbroker. Last week someone had a reserve price of $2000 on a common type 38 Arisaka.

No, but the forum rules do. ;)

I was in the "fine gun room" at the Bass Pro Shop here in Denver awhile back that had two of the most ridiculous, "are you guys smoking crack?" price mark ups I've seen.

The first was two Springfield Model 1861 rifles that looked as though they had been dredged up from the bottom of the Mississippi river. They both had prices tags on them for $2,250.

The second was a Russian Capture Mauser K98 in decent condition. The price on this was $1,299.

I feel sorry for the poor rube who was suckered in to buying those...if they ever did manage to sell them. I would like to think people are smarter than that, but... :(

During the thick of the ammo scare I saw a 50 box of WWB .9mm FMJ for $30. It was at a shop in Manassas VA, one of the worst gun shops I've ever been in.

perhaps not in the title, but I did specify :p

I wish I could find a sweet deal on a safe like that though.

and $999 for a 10/22? HOLY MOLY... Did the tacticool stock make coffee and donuts? Cause then I might be interested :D

Right now, 15 minutes from where I am typing this, a new local gun shop has 20 count steel cased Wolf 7.62x39 fmj for $15.00 per box. Fifteen dollars. A box.

The most ridiculous markup I've seen I see every time I go into the gun store. Or any other store for that matter. I'm talking about when an item sits on the shelf and doesn't sell because it is a slow mover or whatever, but the price changes from week to week.

Of course, I don't work at any of these stores, but I know it happens and you do too. I should take in a Sharpie and mark some containers of powder at this one LGS

One shop I used to go to had a nice WaltherP.38, either a 43 or 44 (can't remember anymore), and it had the right (somewhat worn) holster, with the same year marks.

Price: $900 (this was about 5 years ago)

problem: The gun was nickel plated.

An old h&r .32 top break for $329 at the Radford VA pawn shop. They used to have good prices but I figure I won't waste my time there anymore.

$14.95 a piece from the manufacturer.

Old S&W Victory model with shortish barrel (3in) at pawn shop for around $600

Couple of Jennings POS's at another shop for $300+

At the height of the Great Idiot Panic of 2008-2009 I saw Romanian WASR AKs selling in a shop for over $700 and I remember seeing a box of Wolf .45 ACP 230gr FMJ selling for $45.00

Without counting stuff I saw during the Panic I see old curmudgeonly old men at gun show tables selling pistols like a used Ruger P89 for $500 all the time that normally sell for about $250-$300 at local shops.

Obama panic buy in 08.
I went into one of my local pawn stores and the guy behind the counter was going on and on about "King Faruq" while he was re-marking the price of all of his racked rifles.
He sold a truck-dragged Yugo SKS to some poor guy for $550....

I never went back.

used marlin model 60 for $199. I preceded to tell the owner this gun can be bought brand new for about $150 and he then went on about how i'm a liar and how hes a remington dealer so he knows. I only wish i had the walmart flyer advertising it for $157 i had seen the week before.
