Most overrated?

This is hopefully a new idea- to get away from the "What's your
favorite -----" polls, and the like.

What is, in your opinion, the MOST OVERRATED handgun currently
available, and why?

I guess I would have to say the Glock. I have nothing against the Austrian pistol it is defiantly a very good auto, except i like some metal and a hammer on my pistols. There are many brands and model's as good or better, but they are not put into a god like statis. JMHO.

Australian? Try Austrian....

I also, regretfully will say Glock. Being of Austrian descent you think I should love it. Besides looks, or lack of, the grip angle is so different compared to other guns. Makes it difficult to shoot various other fine weapons.

Oh, I forgot my reply...:)

IMHO, all pistols that are more expensive than my USP9f are scandalously priced and definitely overrated.;)

Since i'm still saving up for a p7, this would be my honest stand on the matter, for now... :D

IMHO the most overrated pistols are those custom-built 1911s that cost $4,000 and up. You can spend under a grand on a Kimber or such and get a perfectly good 1911. That last one hundredth of a ninute of angle costs too much.

Custom 1911's. Why? I just haven't found enough value in them to justify the difference between them and my USP Expert 45.

Well, the winner in this category is once again....the Glock. When it came out in the eighties it was unique. Think about it. If it came out in 2001 would it have been so successful? No way.
I must give Gaston Glock credit....his timing was pretty darn good but there's really nothing special about his pistol. He's sittin' on a beach somewhere, sippin' a umbrella drink laughin' his a** off
:D :D

HK USP.

Your guns aren't selling at $489? Mark 'em up to $689 and watch folks line up for the quality and exclusivity afforded by the new, higher price tag. ;)

(For those of you not old enough to remember or who weren't in the hobby at the time, the USP was introduced as HK's "low-end Glock competitor". They really didn't sell all that well originally; jacking up the price actually helped sales take off.)

1) 1911 - I do not even have to explain.

2) HK-94 - Cheap stamped receiver, and after you spend $3500, you still have a 9mm.

3) Mark 23 - Just another .45 with a longer barrel. Get a Tactical instead, save $1000.

Just my humble opinion . . .

Not trying to join a war, or anything, but I really feel the 1911s are overrated. I like them (flat, can have great triggers, just plain fun to shoot), but I can't say I have ever found one (regardless of the amount of custom work) that's as reliable as a Glock or a Mk III Hi-Power or any H&K or Sig I've ever fired.

And I've fired a pretty good number of 1911s - virtually all with custom work done by reputable 'smiths. Yes, I know that a lot of competition is done with 1911s - that shows that if you tune a machine to work with a specific load (or, rather, tune the load to work with a specific machine), you can make it work well. Now show me you can run even 100 rounds of various JHP loads through that machine w/o failure. Or is that asking too much?

I don't think it is, but that's just my opinion. Now, I certainly agree that the Glocks aren't the as supermagical as sometimes touted. (Heck, what is?) But since we're talking about which type of pistol has more of a bigger following than I feel it's earned, I think the 1911 outdoes the Glock.

I think I'll have to go with the USP as well. Just too expensive for no good reason. My brother really wanted one, but I think he's changed his mind after renting one.

The most overrated guns are whichever ones a given poster owns at a given time. :D

Just to throw gasoline on the fire I'd have to say Les Baer.

Pretty good reasoning, guys. I pretty much concur with all of the
choices put down so far. I also like how this hasn't been turned
into a name-calling event because someone's favorite gun was
picked (and no-one used the word "SUCKS":p :D ).

Anyway, so far it seems that the custom 1911 types are regarded
as overrated with a vote of 6, the Glock following close with 4,
and the USP-types with a count of 3 (or tied with the Glock,
depending on how you read New Comer's post:D ).

(I was a little surprised with the Glock's # of votes, but hey, that's
cool. ).

So, post on! FTR, I think that the 1911-types are overrated, too.
Nothing wrong with them (I like them, too, but I don't make a
religion out of them), or with the Glock (added as a disclaimer:D )

When you say overrated, what do you mean? Overrated by whom? The manufacturer? Shooters? Gun rags?

Glocks are well liked, and certainly have a strong following, but they do what they are advertised to do. If a gun is well liked by many does that mean it is overrated?

1911s certianly have a follwing that may rival Glock's. Why would they qualify as overrated? Price=overrated?

H&Ks do everything H&K says they will do. I see them being mentioned as being overrated, but why are they overrated? Has someone proclaimed H&Ks to be the "end-all" of handguns?

In my opinion, "overrated" implies that a gun is purported to do something that it can't do. In which of these cases (Glock, 1911, H&K) is that true?
