Most durable revolver?

hard to wear out a quality firearm

Possible with neglect on your part or a lot of shooting. I mean A LOT!

For cowboy shooting ruger is the way to go. Most Colts need a parts kit on hand to replace parts that were designed 150 years ago. Ruger springs last just about forever.

Hard to look passed a Ruger. Mine eats crazy loads and comes back for more.

In the early years of metallic silhouette, in the production .357 magnum revolver class, Dan Wesson dominated the field.

It's hard to imagine anything tougher than an N frame Smith or a Blackhawk, but, the Dan kept running when those other two quit.

A change in the rules, that had kept Freedom Arms out, was made and Freedom Arms went on to dominate that class.

Since you specified single action and under $800, stainless Ruger. Not even debatable. Unless you literally blow it up, it will outlive you.

Within the stated price range, you can't go wrong with either the Ruger single or double action revolvers. Also, any of the L frame S&W double action revolvers. Your choice of calibers from .22 up to .45. :)

S&W?

Ruger , Hands down. I love SA revolvers.

If your buying used pistols you could get a couple of them for $800.
If you are wanting a .22 and a .357 . You could get one of each New. Unless your shopping at some higher markup places.

Check Gunbroker.com or Buds gun shop online, keeping in mind that you have a transfer fee from the dealer who does your paperwork. Usually buds ships for free and most on gunbroker charge 25 to 35 bucks shipping.

I see all these posts saying S&W. Do they even make a single action since the Model 3 was made ???

Rugers are the toughest... but the gritty 30 lb pull trigger will never be on par with S&W, and dry firing a Ruger 200,000 times to loosen it will give a person carpal tunnel.
BTW, I still like my SP 101 snub :D

tough

For a SA, I'd go with Ruger Blackhawk.

But I'll mention that back in the day, FLETC (Border Patrol I think) did a side by side test of Smith K frames, and the Ruger DA, the Security -6. I am not sure if they tested any Colts, and the L-frame Smith was not on the market. They shot the revolvers till failure. The Ruger Sec-6 was the walk away winner. Border patrol selected the Ruger as their duty revolver.....and a short while later the wonder-nine rage struck and the Ruger fell into obscurity.

Pretty sure they did not test any N frames as it was deemed to large a revolver for the issued 110 +P+ Treasury Load.

I was not there for the excercise, but it was common conversation among the instructor types when I was.

Given your description of what you want in the original post....

the older Large frame Ruger Vaquero in 45 Colt .

It's got the "Cowboy" styling you like, and can digest some very stiff "Ruger Only" loads.

Fits well within your budget with money left over.

Can't think of another "cowboy styled" single action that's as rugged and reliable in that price range.

Owning six Rugers and two Smiths, I like the Ruger. For those who think they're not refined, $30 worth of main spring and return spring does wonders.
