More Walmart policy changes?

The last time I bought ammo there, it depended on weather the ammo was behind the counter or in a display on the shelves. The shelved stuff, usually shotgun shells, could be payed for up front, but they had a time limit. I tried to stock up once sometime after midnight, and they said they couldn't sell ammo that late.

As far as store policy, company policy, or the law, I can see where a new employee could be confused on those specifics.

The couple of Walmarts around here wont let you leave the sporting goods counter without paying.

That's my experience here in VT too. About all I buy there is the occasional box of ammo and blue jeans.

Last time I was there the ammo case was picked clean, not much in stock to choose from.

Its their ammo, their rules, their employee man hours wasted - it's Walmart, what do you expect? I'm indifferent to this, but I buy most of my ammo online anyway.

The local Walmart here requires you to pay for the ammo at the sports counter. No big deal for me.

I do not buy ammo very often, but when I do, they put it in a bag for me. I then go to the cosmetic department and shop around. (Cosmetics has the highest level of theft when compared to all other departments.) I will pick things up and put them down, turn my back to the cameras, etc... Usually after doing this a couple of times with different products, a sales assoc. will show up and ask if I need help. "Nope, I am just doing my Christmas shoplifting, thank you." I discreetly get followed around until I leave store.

Security use to wait for me at the front door, but I have pulled this too often and now I just get a "Hey Mr. Buck, messing with people today?" I have tried complaining to the General Manager (He lives next door to me) about the policy and he just laughs and tells me to quit messing with his store security. (True Story)

I, and many others, have the option of buying from Walmart or not. Just because I have that option does not mean I have to buy there. Just because they have the lowest prices does not mean you get treated like your at McDonalds, you do not get to "have it your way" all the time.

I was told there is actually a study that shows for every customer Walmart makes mad and quits shopping at Walmart, there are something like fourteen customers who come in and buy the same thing with-out a problem. So by leaving the ammo on the shelf, you have made some othe people very happy.

Buying ammo is easier than buying tobacco at Walmart. You have to go through one specific check stand to buy tobacco and it is the 20 items or less stand.

ammunition from the locked cases is well considered to be a more potent useful blend then the boxes of target loads for your 12 gauge bird gun over on the endcap next to the fishing waders.

the only firearm related items that require an escort through the building and out to the front entrance is actual guns. ammunition they sell to you and let you go about your way.

seriously, they arent supposed to let you leave the gun counter without paying for that 9mm, 22lr, etc. they ring it up, check your age, make change, put it in a bag tie it up and staple the reciept to it and say "thank you for being a walmart customer. is there anything i can do to make your shopping experience more enjoyable?"

its locked up because people wanna steal it. you know a box of 100 9mm goes into any purse or coat pocket. its alot harder to carry a 100 round case of 12guage winchester aa clays loads out.

I've been buying ammo from Walmart for about two years in my area. I recently stopped buying it there but but that's another story. I've always had to pay for it in sporting goods. The good thing is, if there are no items to weigh they'll usually check everything there so I don't have to go through two check-outs.

At the Walmarts here you have to buy the ammo at the gun counter. But the line there is always short and you can buy the ammo and then do the rest of your shopping or just buy everything at the ammo counter if you just have a few things. Easy, actually easier than waiting in lines up front.

Assuming this is the "new policy", the reason has to be...

Their lawyers are terrified that someone will buy ammunition, then pull out a weapon -- load it -- and either kill themselves or others in the store.

With the increase in concealed carry everywhere, this in fact could be the reason. You know... the "walmart walk"...

So far, I have not run into this at any of the Walmarts that I visit in my area. But the last time I bought ammo there was in December 2011.

I saw my first AR's in a Walmart recently in Clarksville TN. I had previously seen Mini's in my area, but no ARs. To be honest, I am somewhat surprised that they carry them regardless of the pricing. But it is a good step in the right direction as far as I'm concerned.

One thing that has always surprised me is that the ammo counter person does not tie the bag shut with the receipt when you buy it there in every Walmart I have visited and purchased ammunition. I do it personally because I want to reduce any suspicion of shoplifting when I go to the main registers to pay for the rest of my order.

I do pay for my entire purchase at the ammo counter if I am only picking up a few things.

At my local Walmart, you can pay at sporting goods or up front, which ever you prefer. The only problem I have is hunting down the sporting goods clerk to open the case...Sometimes I have to go to the auto dept. and have the guy paged.

Don't forget it wouldn't be too hard to slip a handful of 9mm into your pocket and leave a half-empty box (that may seem full) lying on a shelf somewhere.

I always make the sporting goods counter my last stop. I pay for ammo and everything else there. I avoid any back-up there might be at the regular registers.

You do know they sell tomatoes by the lbs.

No scales

I don't recall being told I have to pay for ammo at the SG counter, but if I'm just picking uip a box or two I do anyhow. One time I went in years ago and bought some ammo. I'm not sure what chambering it was, only that it was something that I could use in either a carbine or hand gun. The guy asked me what I was going to shoot it in, I told him "A gun". He asked "What kind of gun?" I told him "I have several different ones that will shoot this ammo" He asked "Is it a handgun?" I told him "I have both hand guns and long guns that take this ammo, so it depends which one I'm shooting it in." When he started to ask another question I told him "I'm over the age of 21 so it's legal for me to buy this ammo, and it's none of your, Wal-Mart's or anyone elses business what guns I have or which ones I'm going to shoot this ammo in..."

I did have one guy tell me that they would not sell you a gun and the ammo at the same time, that a manager had to walk the gun out and turn it over to you at the door. I asked why that was. He said something to the effect that then you wouldn't have both of them at the same time. I asked him if he had any idea of how many of the patrons in the store had a concealed carry permit and were in fact walking around the store armed at that very moment. He just gave me the "deer in the headlights" stare as I walked away....

Normally, you either pay for it in Sporting Goods and walk off with it, or they carry it to the front so it is waiting for you when you get done shopping. They do the same thing for perfume, electronics, and jewelry. It has been like that for years. There are people who steal $2 flea collars for their cats, so I can't hold it against a store for wanting to protect items like ammo that can easily cost $20-30 and fit in a single pocket.

In this case, the guy was on his fourth day, so he probably didn't have a code for the register yet. He couldn't ring up the sale, but he knew from training that if you aren't paying now he is supposed to take it up front, so he did what he learned in training.

It is the current policy of walmart and has been for some time that anything locked up(ammo, guns, jewelry)have to be paid for at the counter.

The only time it gets a walk to the front for you is at night or the person that is in the dept isn't register trained. All ammo sales should be done at the sporting goods counter, same for jewelry and now TLE or tire/lube/express.

Have a nice day and thank you for shopping at walmart:D
